Book Living in a Hazardscape

Download or read book Living in a Hazardscape written by Shabana Khan and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Living in a hazardscape' not only gives a picture of the local hazardscape of the Wellington Region, New Zealand but also illustrates its influences on the hazard response of the local people and administration. It is based on a simple work that while integrated hazard management systems tend to adopt uniform response strategies over space, different aspects of a hazardscape produce variations in the local response which subsequently influence the nature and timing of a disaster occurrence. The book adopts a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to present the theoretical and practical facets of the hazardscape.

In the disaster response and relief actions, different volunteers, government staffs, community rescue workers, NGOs and INGOs as well as local people is necessary. Among them the roles of security forces like Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Nepal APF are also one of the most important ones. They have been performing actions in co-ordination with government and different stakeholders. Their works has been documented to lesser extent due to lack of access to public or various other reasons. Although the works of Nepal Army and Nepal Police has been found studied and documented, Nepal APF as the youngest security organization of Nepal Government has not been studied. There is lack of literature regarding the topic. So this topic was chosen for the study. This research has three research questions based on the objectives of the study. The first question was aimed to understand and analyze disaster management programs and relief practices of Nepal APF. The second question was aimed to examine the trends and ways how Nepal APF practices disaster preparedness. Similarly, third question was aimed to understand the process of rescue and relief practices of Nepal APF. The study had helped to find out the answers of following questions: What are the disaster preparedness and relief programs/practices of Nepal APF? Book Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction

Download or read book Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction written by Carina Fearnley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon presentations given during the conference on ‘Disaster Risk Reduction for Natural Hazards: Putting Research into Practice’, held at University College London in November 2009, the articles collected in this book examine how natural hazards research is accessed and used by practitioners and decision-makers, and conversely, how policy and practice inform research. As with the conference, this book successfully brings together views from humanitarian and development agencies, academia, business, government and funding bodies. It is rare to engage such a wide range of sectors in a discussion relating to the issues of disaster risk reduction from a natural hazards perspective, and the book captures this interaction and the resultant exchange of ideas, thus providing an insight into how stakeholders respectively undertake or engage with natural hazards research. Collectively, the articles highlight the need for greater dialogue, understanding and collaboration between all these sectors if research is to be made relevant and generate significant impact on risk reduction policy and practice. There is an urgent requirement to better understand the respective needs, ways of working, project timescales and funding mechanisms for disaster risk reduction, as well as the challenges posed by institutional and organizational structures and functions. These issues must be overcome to ensure that ultimately, and most significantly, discussions turn into positive practical actions so that research on natural hazards is relevant and applicable. The book represents a step in that journey. This book was published as a special issue of Environmental Hazards.

Book Seismic Risk Awareness Preparedness Amongst Backpackers in New Zealand

Download or read book Seismic Risk Awareness Preparedness Amongst Backpackers in New Zealand written by M. Kueckels and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this research is to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of awareness and perception of seismic risk among backpackers in New Zealand. To achieve this, the study aims firstly at assessing seismic risk awareness and preparedness by investigating different factors such as hazard knowledge and attitudes towards risk. Secondly the research wants to investigate how risk awareness shapes backpackers’ sense of place. Much is known about risk perception and destination image, but only little about the influence on sense of place. Lastly, by identifying how seismic risk is presented online, it can be clarified whether backpackers need more information on earthquakes and risks related and whether tourism businesses and operators take the responsibility to inform tourists about potential hazards.
