Book The Preparation of Teachers in Ontario and the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Preparation of Teachers in Ontario and the United States Classic Reprint written by Frank Arthur Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preparation of Teachers in Ontario and the United States In Ontario extensive provision is made for the preparation of teachers. Every position in the schools, from Kindergarten to University, must be filled by a trained teacher if such is available, and no one can receive a permanent certificate as a teacher Without Scholarship, pedagogical training, and experience. The academic and professional courses are distinctly separated; the professional training being acquired in special schools, after the acquisition of academic knowledge in the High Schools or Universities. Teachers of different qualifications are required for the various grades of schools, and hence there have been established three types of training schools for teachers; the Provincial Model Schools, the Provincial Normal Schools, and the Faculties of Education in the University of Toronto and in Queen's University, Kingston. In the High Schools, special courses are provided for those who are seeking to enter upon the work of teaching. Students who desire to attend a Model School must pass the examination known as Entrance to Model Schools, at the end of a two years' course. Those who wish to attend a' Normal School must Com plete this course and continue for two years longer, when they must pass the Entrance to Normal School examination. A further course Of two years prepares them for the Entrance to Faculty examination. There is still another way in which a student may proceed in his preparation; he may take the matriculation course in the High School and secure a degree in Arts from a University after an attendance of four years. This degree will admit him to the Faculty of Education. He may have specialized during his University career, and then upon graduating from the Faculty of Education, he may secure a Specialist professional certificate. A' holder of such a certificate usually becomes a teacher in a High School or Collegiate Institute. Prospective teachers who attend the Universities take their courses in Arts with students who will enter other professions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions to Teachers of Secondary Schools: An Address to the College and High School Section of the Ontario Educational Association, April 3rd, 1902 I regret to hear that in some of your Sections the latest product of educational evolution - Manual Training and. Domestic Science and Art - was last year, and, I fear, is even this year, Spoken of in a. Somewhat inconsiderate way. Permit me to say that indifference; or hostility, no less than the advocacy of the thoughtless enthusiast, is much to be deprecated. Every new problem in education deserves earnest and respectful consideration. Very generally throughout Ontario, the Commercial Department is coming to the front. Stenography is being taught, type-writing machines are being purchased, and book-keeping in its various departments is one of the most important subjects of the course. When the management is judicious, the popularity of the new departure is seen in increased attendance, and the comparative ease with which a larger municipal grant is often obtainable. Domestic Science and Manual Training have already been introduced in a number of localities, and in a few years we Shall have many centres for this kind of work. Real technical education, however, except in a few localities, is still a thing of the future, and there is some reason to regret the mental confusion that exists in many quarters as to its relation to Manual Training. These new subjects have come to stay, and it would be well for all of you - Classical, Mathematical, Science, and Moderns men - to realize the fact, and to use the movement, as it may be used, for the proper ends of education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plan of Preparing Teachers As a summary of the distinctive elements in the plan Of the San Francisco State Normal School the following features may be stated: the school is a strictly professional school requiring for admission the same degree of general scholarship as that set by the universities, but it does not include general scholarship in its courses of instruction. Systematic provision is made for the selection of persons possessing the inborn teaching personality and for the elimination of those who are lacking in essentials of personality. The purpose of the school is limited to the preparation of students of selected personality to be class teachers in the primary and grammar grades. This prepa ration consists oi training in the arts of instruction as habits, and in the technical pedagogy and theory of teaching the school subjects as perspective to the arts acquired in the Training School. The actual teaching Of the Training School provides for the practice of ten weeks in each grade and in all standard subjects of the primary and grammar school, under careful supervision, covering a practical ex perience of at least two years. The daily teaching is accompanied by the study of the theoretic pedagogy of the subjects taught in the Training School. Book Companion to the Fourth Book

Download or read book Companion to the Fourth Book written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Companion to the Fourth Book: Of the Ontario Series of Readers The character of the teaching done in our schools is determined, to a considerable extent, by the character of the examinations for which the pupils are preparing. It is, therefore, gratifying to observe the improvement in the papers set at the Entrance Examination, especially in the English subjects. Our own language is now taking its proper place, inthe Public and High Schools at least, as the most important subject of. Study, and it is evident that English Literature is no longer to be regarded merely as a convenient subject upon which to base a series of questions in parsing, analysis. And derivation. The object of these notes is to help the students of Literature in the Fourth Class of our Public Schools to a clearer understanding and a higher appreciation of the selections studied by them; and it is believed that the lines of investigation here followed out will be found the most suitable for them, and, perhaps, too, for students of a larger growth. The use of these notes may be hurtful or beneficial, according as the student depends upon them entirely, or merely regards them as a sign-board pointing out the way in which he can investigate, examine, and compare for himself. In their preparation, care has been taken to avoid the introduction of any class of notes that might direct the pupils' study into unprofitable channels. Suggestive notes have been preferred to explanatory notes, except in cases where explanations really seemed to be needed. The original plan was to have them almost entirely of a suggestive character, but more explanation was subse quently introduced at the request of some who thought the notes should explain everything beyond the easy attainment of Fourth Class pupils. Wherever the meanings of words have been given, they will generally be found to express in Simple language the idea intended to be conveyed by the author; they are not mere synonyms of a general character. The teacher is the best annotator of the lessons he teaches, and neither notes nor suggestions of any kind can supply his place; but few teachers have at hand such sources of information as will enable them to explain everything that may arise in the course of their teaching. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Professional Training of Secondary Teachers in the United States Within the last century the educational advancement, at least in the more progressive nations, has been so rapid, the scientific spirit so pronounced, and the differentiation and increased complexity of subject-matter so great, that it has become necessary to simplify the processes of education by more expert teaching. The science of education, depending as it does for much Of its material upon the scientific advancement in other fields of thought, has been slow in its development. But the growth of this subject in late years has been rapid and encouraging. Along with the advancement of the science of education has come a deeper interest in the science and art of teaching and in the professional training of teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Teachers The first thing to be considered is the fact that the train ing of teachers, as the phrase is now understood, had pre viously been wholly neglected throughout the country. Teachers had no other preparation for their work than their natural aptitude for the art, their knowledge of the subjects which they taught, and such practical lessons as they learned in their school rooms. As respects their academic prepa ration, they presented, as a class, a very motley appearance, as a cursory view of the schools of the country will abun dantly Show.
