In particular, special consideration is given to a family of models known collectively as TRAINVICE. Although they are all intended to provide an index of transfer potential, these four models differ in several important ways. The variables considered in the calculation of the indices are given different degrees of emphasis (or weight) in each model. In fact, in some cases a variable is ignored completely; e.g., the instructional features of a training device. The preparatory analyses employed to estimate the values of each variable change a great deal from model to model. Moreover, the combinatorial procedures used to calculate an index of effectiveness from the variable values are very different in each model. A major goal of this report is to present the principle points of difference among the various predictive models, and thus facilitate a comparative assessment of their merit. The results of the analysis and subsequent validation will provide a basis for the selection/refinement of one or more of the models for incorporation into a defined set of procedures for specifying training device effectiveness.

Book excerpt: A review of the literature relating to the role of prediction in manual control resulted in substantial evidence indicating that learning to control vehicles in complex maneuvers such as orbital docking is primarily a matter of learning to predict the future states of the vehicle. The purpose of this project was to: (a) investigate the relation between the ability to predict and manual control skill, and (b) determine the effect of prediction training on learning vehicular control. Two simulated docking experiments were performed. The results supported the hypothesis that ability to control is highly correlated with ability to predict. It was also demonstrated that while prediction training alone is no more effective than standard training, a combination of the two training methods appears to be much more effective than training in either control or prediction alone. It is therefore recommended that manual control training programs incorporate training in prediction. It is also recommended that associated training devices be revised or developed so as to incorporate means of training prediction skills and of measuring prediction capability. (Author).

The revision was undertaken with a view to enhancing the validity and practicality of application of the original model, based upon experience gained in its utilization. Further, the suggested revision aims to make the methodology more amenable to utilization by a wider spectrum of users.

Effective training system design can be facilitated if the requirements of the real-world task are properly included in training. Book excerpt: The research objective was to determine the effectiveness of a new device concept for helicopter contact flight training and the usefulness of such a device for predicting performance during subsequent flight training. The device was a commercially available captive helicopter attached to a ground effects machine. Two experimental groups of trainees received 3 1/4 or 7 1/4 hours of device training prior to primary helicopter training. In comparison with control groups, both device trained groups (a) were significantly less likely to be eliminated from subsequent flight training for reasons of flying deficiency; (b) required less flight training to attain the proficiency required to solo the helicopter; and (c) received higher grades during early training. Trainees who performed well on the training device tended to perform well during subsequent flight training. Instructors using devices such as this one need not be proficient in the helicopter used for subsequent flight training. (Author).
