Job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and Fishbein's model predicted reenlistment intentions and reenlistment behaviors of 484 National Guardsmen with high accuracy. Moreover, Fishbein's model and organizational commitment predicted the reenlistment criteria more accurately than did job satisfaction. The implications of these results for organizational retention and the attitude-behavior relationships are discussed. (Author).

The long-term retention of employees has increased in importance as a result of the military's technological modernization. The extensive high-cost training required of today's sailor -- and the decrease in the size of the military's active forces have made long-term retention critical to the military mission. In any environment in which retention is a primary goal, an essential first step in controlling attrition is the development of an in-depth understanding of the employee turnover decision process. To this end, the purpose of this study is two fold. First, the current study expands the body of knowledge pertaining to the specific turnover decision processes followed by employees. A better understanding of these processes will allow employers to ascertain the types of events that initiate the turnover process as well as differences between the decision processes followed by individuals who leave the organization and those who choose to stay. Second, through an analysis of employee decision processes, the study identifies specific types of employer intervention which could ultimately result in a reduction in turnover. In an effort to assist human resource managers' overall assessment of employee turnover, the results of the study also provide additional guidance on the impact economic consequences have on the decision to quit and for distinguishing between controllable and uncontrollable turnover.

The general problem is that employee undesirable voluntary turnover regularly occurs in organizations. This study of job embeddedness is unprecedented and is the first scholarly work using a sample from the Aerospace and Defense Industry. The purpose of this quantitative study was to evaluate the primary data collected to examine the linear association between job (organization and community) embeddedness at the sub-dimension (fit, links, and sacrifice) level and voluntary turnover in the Aerospace and Defense Industry subpopulation System Engineering and Technical Assistance (SETA) support contract workforce. The sample (n = 185) included full-time working adults age 18 to 65 in the United States. The respondents, for two weeks in mid-Spring 2014, self-reported and completed a Likert scale survey as the primary data collection instrument. Three research questions were investigated. Research question 1 determined the relationship between on-the-job embeddedness and voluntary turnover amongst defense SETA support contract employees. The study findings revealed there is a significant relationship between on-the-job embeddedness and intention to voluntary turnover. Research question 2 determined the relationship between off-the-job embeddedness and voluntary turnover amongst defense SETA support contract employees. The study findings revealed there is a significant relationship between off-the-job embeddedness and intention to voluntary turnover. Research question 3 asked, "What is the difference between age, job embeddedness, and voluntary turnover amongst defense SETA support contract employees?" This research question was eliminated because of data skew. In addition, significant gender statistical analysis differences exist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers and human resource departments have focused on employee turnover for decades. This study developed a methodology forecasting employee turnover at organizational and departmental levels to shorten lead time for hiring employees. Various time series modeling techniques were used to identify optimal models for effective employee-turnover prediction based on a large U.S organization's 11-year monthly turnover data. A dynamic regression model with additive trend, seasonality, interventions, and a very important economic indicator efficiently predicted turnover. Another turnover model predicted both retirement and quitting, including early retirement incentives, demographics, and external economic indicators using the Cox proportional hazard model. A variety of biases in employee-turnover databases along with modeling strategies and factors were discussed. A simulation demonstrated sampling biases' potential impact on predictions. A key factor in the retirement was achieving full vesting, but employees who did not retire immediately maintain a reduced hazard after qualifying for retirement. Also, the model showed that external economic indicators related to S&P 500 real earnings were beneficial in predicting retirement while dividends were most associated with quitting behavior. The third model examined voluntary turnover factors using logistic regression and forecasted employee tenure using a decision tree for four research and development departments. Company job title, gender, ethnicity, age and years of service affected voluntary turnover behavior. However, employees with higher salaries and more work experience were more likely to quit than those with lower salaries and less experience. The result also showed that college major and education level were not associated with R&D employees' decision to quit.
