Book Pictures of St Peter in an English Home Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pictures of St Peter in an English Home Classic Reprint written by A. L. O. E. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-24 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures of St. Peter in an English Home Harold and Robin Hartley were the adopted sons of the widowed Lady Laurie, and as dear to her heart as was her only daughter Ida. Since the time that the missionary Mr. Hartley's two motherless boys had arrived under the lady's hospitable roof, she had, till this year, rarely been parted from either of them even for a day. Their joys and sorrows were hers; and to train her three children for heaven had been Lady Laurie's dearest object on earth. The year preceding that on which my story opens had been one of strong lights and shadows to the Hartleys. Then had occurred the fearful Mutiny of 1857, to which their only remaining parent had all but fallen a victim, even his death having been (though falsely) reported. To this sorrow had succeeded the great joy of Mr. Hartley's unexpected return to his native country. But the missionary had remained but six months in England to recruit his broken health he was so intensely anxious to return to his little native flock, whom he had been compelled to leave without any earthly shepherd in a time of confusion and danger, that nothing could persuade Mr. Hartley to remain away from the land where he had nearly lost his life. One care had been removed from the missionary's mind before he left. Mr. Hartley's elder son, Harold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A late literary success had put him in funds: this appeared to his sanguine eye as nothing more than the first fruits, raised from a mine of precious ore, more and more and more to be brought to the sur face, whenever sought for. Book Christian Suffering Its Dignity and Its Efficacy

Download or read book Christian Suffering Its Dignity and Its Efficacy written by Horatio Potter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Suffering, Its Dignity and Its Efficacy: Sermon, Occasioned by the Death of the Hon. Ambrose Spencer, and Preached in St. Peter's Church, Albany, on Sunday, March 19, 1848 In the last place, look at Death. Apart from the mercy of God, in Christ Jesus, it is simply the punishment of sin, dark and hopeless. It is the end of all that we naturally delight in, and the be ginning of all that we naturally dread. To lay a child or a parent in the grave, is in the view of nature, to lose it forever; to descend into the grave ourselves, is to bid farewell to light, and life, and social joy, and to go into darkness, we know not whither; probably to something infinitely more ter rible, than the mere dissolution of the body. No wonder that where death bears such a character, all men should try to keep it out of sight, and to forget it! But 0! What a different thing is death, in the view of the Christian! For him to die is to be blessed! I heard a voice from Heaven, saying unto me, write, from henceforth blessed are the dead who die in the Lord; even so saith the Spirit, for they rest from their labors. To die is to follow Christ. To die is gain. To die is to put off the mortal body with all its weakness and misery, and to be clothed upon with something new and glori ous, and immortal. The vile body is changed, and made like unto the glorious body of our Lord. The trials and sorrows of earth are exchanged for the everlasting joys of Heaven. Farewell sin, fare well grief, farewell pain and weakness! No morecon icts, no more fearful strivings, no more seeing through a glass darkly! The righteous hath hope in his death. Instead of shrinking from the grave, in horror and despair, we can go to it with tranquil assurance to carry our precious Christian dust, or to seek a resting place for our own mortal esh. We look, not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. Christ hath died; yea, is risen again. Because He lives, we, His members, shall live also; and we can say, with an Apostle, 0, Death! Where is thy sting! 0, Grave! Where is thy victory! Thanks be to God which giveth as the victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
