Book excerpt: So when Tammy was a young girl, she always loved animals, and in her free time, she drew things. She wasn't really good at painting and drawing, but she always managed to draw something when she was upset. One time she drew herself wearing a medal in some competition with a racket in her hand, and instead of a real audience, she drew all kinds of animals that were clapping for her victory. Tammy showed that drawing to her dad and all he said was that girls look better when they wear dresses and make delicious food. That didn't make Tammy from achieving her passion, except it just made her reconsider her choices every once in a while. "On the count, if 3, we will run." Said Dan. He waited for the pendulum to start moving again. At the count of three, both of them ran as fast as they could. As they ran, the pace of the pendulum also got faster with every move, but they closed their eyes and kept on running. They both passed the pendulums and got out of the hall. "We almost died, Dan." Said Tammy. The clock hall ended up in an open field. "How far are we from the treasure?" asked Tammy. "We are almost there we need to pass the rolling stones now," Dan said. There was a huge sound of a thud heard, and they were surrounded by grey stones. It seemed like they were almost surrounded by another wall. "Why are you guys here?" one of the stones asked them. "We are here to find the hidden treasure." Said Dan. Tammy pinched Dan's arms. The stones increased up to twice. "I meant we are here to give you guys treats." Said Dan instantly. "TREATS!" all the stones said.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the emergent and internationally widespread phenomenon of precariousness, specifically in relation to the home. It maps the complex reality of the insecure home by examining the many ways in which precariousness is manifested in legal and social change across a number of otherwise very different jurisdictions. By applying innovative work done by socio-legal scholars in other fields such as labour law and welfare law to the home, Law and the Precarious Home offers a broader theoretical understanding of contemporary 'precarisation' of law and society. It will enable reflections upon differential experience of home dependent upon class, race and gender from a range of local, national and cross-national perspectives. Finally it will explore the pluralisation of ideas of home in subjective experience, social reality and legal form. The answers offered in this book reflect the expertise and standing of the assembled authors who are international leaders in their field, with decades of first-hand practical and intellectual engagement with the area.

Book Precarious Intimacies

Download or read book Precarious Intimacies written by Faith MacNeil Taylor and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time of increasing social and economic inequality, this book illustrates the precarity experienced by millennials facing both rising rents and wage stagnation. Featuring the voices of those with lived experience of precarity in north-east London, MacNeil Taylor focuses on intimacy, reproduction and emotional labour. The book widens readers’ understanding of a middle-class ‘generation rent’ beyond those locked out of anticipated home ownership by considering both social and private renters. Situated in a feminist and queer theoretical framework, the book reveals the crucial role of British policy-making on housing, welfare, and immigration in exacerbating inter- and intra-generational inequality.

Book Limits to Decolonization

Download or read book Limits to Decolonization written by Penelope Anthias and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penelope Anthias’s Limits to Decolonization addresses one of the most important issues in contemporary indigenous politics: struggles for territory. Based on the experience of thirty-six Guaraní communities in the Bolivian Chaco, Anthias reveals how two decades of indigenous mapping and land titling have failed to reverse a historical trajectory of indigenous dispossession in the Bolivian lowlands. Through an ethnographic account of the "limits" the Guaraní have encountered over the course of their territorial claim—from state boundaries to landowner opposition to hydrocarbon development—Anthias raises critical questions about the role of maps and land titles in indigenous struggles for self-determination. Anthias argues that these unresolved territorial claims are shaping the contours of an era of "post-neoliberal" politics in Bolivia. Limits to Decolonization reveals the surprising ways in which indigenous peoples are reframing their territorial projects in the context of this hydrocarbon state and drawing on their experiences of the limits of state recognition. The tensions of Bolivia’s "process of change" are revealed, as Limits to Decolonization rethinks current debates on cultural rights, resource politics, and Latin American leftist states. In sum, Anthias reveals the creative and pragmatic ways in which indigenous peoples contest and work within the limits of postcolonial rule in pursuit of their own visions of territorial autonomy.

Download or read book The New Urban Ruins written by Cian O'Callaghan and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2023-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an innovative perspective to consider contemporary urban challenges through the lens of urban vacancy. Centering urban vacancy as a core feature of urbanization, the contributors coalesce new empirical insights on the impacts of recent contestations over the re-use of vacant spaces in post-crisis cities across the globe. Using international case studies from the Global North and Global South, it sheds important new light on the complexity of forces and processes shaping urban vacancy and its re-use, exploring these areas as both lived spaces and sites of political antagonism. It explores what has and hasn't worked in re-purposing vacant sites and provides sustainable blueprints for future development.
