The Paris of the 1860s and 1870s was a brand-new city, recently adorned with boulevards, cafés, parks, Great Exhibitions, and suburban pleasure grounds—the birthplace of the habits of commerce and leisure that we ourselves know as "modern life." A new kind of culture quickly developed in this remade metropolis, sights and spectacles avidly appropriated by a new kind of "consumer": clerks and shopgirls, neither working class nor bourgeois, inventing their own social position in a system profoundly altered by their very existence. Emancipated and rootless, these men and women flocked to the bars and nightclubs of Paris, went boating on the Seine at Argenteuil, strolled the island of La Grande-Jatte—enacting a charade of community that was to be captured and scrutinized by Manet, Degas, and Seurat. It is Clark's cogently argued (and profusely illustrated) thesis that modern art emerged from these painters' attempts to represent this new city and its inhabitants. They have, with very rare exceptions, exhibited at special minor galleries, where they become known to a very restricted public. Ever attacked, and poor until the last few years, they enjoyed none of the benefits of publicity and sham glory. It is only quite recently that the admission of the incomplete and badly arranged Caillebotte collection to the Luxembourg Gallery has enabled the public to form a summary idea of Impressionism. To conclude the enumeration of the obstacles, it must be added that there are hardly any photographs of Impressionist works in the market. As it is, photography is but a poor translation of these canvases devoted to the study of the play of light; but even this very feeble means of distribution has been withheld from them! Exhibited at some galleries, gathered principally by Durand-Ruel, sold directly to art-lovers-foreigners mostly-these large series of works have practically remained unknown to the French public. All the public heard was the reproaches and sarcastic comments of the opponents, and they never became aware that in the midst of modern life the greatest, the richest movement was in progress, which the French school had known since the days of Romanticism. Impressionism has been made known to them principally by the controversies and by the fruitful consequences of this movement for the illustration and study of contemporary life.

Complexity means integration, value and goodness - concepts that seem to be neglected today. The book also has a high degree of integration/complexity, although each chapter introduces a new issue. The last chapter: "Binary Model of the Universe" draws attention to the need for including in physics the analysis of our mind and the resulting new possibilities, which include the mentioned (digital) model of the universe. Despite the difficult issues raised here, this study is written in accessible language and may be interesting not only for scientists and academics.

Book excerpt: Robert Henri is regarded as the quintessential American Realist and the outspoken representative of the Ashcan artists. Inspired by his philosophy of artistic practice, Henri's followers embraced their individuality and represented their engagement with the realities of modern life. For his own part, however, Henri never truly adopted the reformist style embraced by the Ashcan Realists. Instead, his art remained torn between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In other words, there is a fundamental division between the philosophy that aligned Henri with his pupils and the style and substance of his own artistic practice. By looking back to Henri's formative years-when he dabbled in impressionism, symbolism, and aestheticism-we can gain a fuller understanding of the dichotomous, sometimes contradictory nature of his more conservative artistic practice and his progressive philosophy of art. Reexamination also connects Henri to the influential artists of the nineteenth century, such as James McNeill Whistler, who contributed to his complex artistic philosophy, style, and technique. Throughout this project follows Henri's navigation of a range of anti-academic, late-nineteenth century art traditions in combination with more academic practice to reconsider Henri's lasting interest in nineteenth century modernisms. Most relevant to our modern moment, this project takes a second look at his portraits of Chinese Americans, which are conventionally read through the lens of "realism." Not "honest" representations, these portraits are tempered by Henri's imagination, popular culture, and the Japonisme of Whistler, the Impressionists, and the Symbolists. Finally, critical reconsideration of Henri's publication "The Art Spirit" reveals the lasting legacy of nineteenth-century thought in Henri's philosophy of art even as it inspires more forward-thinking practice.

In A Forest of Symbols, Andrei Pop presents a groundbreaking reassessment of those writers and artists in the late nineteenth century associated with the Symbolist movement. For Pop, “symbolist” denotes an art that is self-conscious about its modes of making meaning, and he argues that these symbolist practices, which sought to provide more direct access to viewers and readers by constant revision of its material means of meaning-making (brushstrokes on a canvas, words on a page), are crucial to understanding the genesis of modern art. The symbolists saw art not as a social revolution, but as a revolution in sense and how to conceptualize the world. The concerns of symbolist painters and poets were shared to a remarkable degree by theoretical scientists of the period, who were dissatisfied with the strict empiricism dominant in their disciplines, which made shared knowledge seem unattainable. The problem of subjectivity in particular, of what in one's experience can and cannot be shared, was crucial to the possibility of collaboration within science and to the communication of artistic innovation. Pop offers close readings of the literary and visual practices of Manet and Mallarmé, of drawings by Ernst Mach, William James and Wittgenstein, of experiments with color by Bracquemond and Van Gogh, and of the philosophical systems of Frege and Russell—filling in a startling but coherent picture of the symbolist heritage of modernity and its consequences.
