Book The Poultry and Egg Situation May June 1949 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation: May-June, 1949 Egg prices rose during May. U. S. Farm prices, averaging cents per dozen, were cents higher than in April, and the increase for tep grade eggs in metropolitan markets was even greater. The greater increase in the price of top-grade eggs is probably a result of warmer weather which reduces the proportion of high-quality eggs in the general run of eggs brought to market. The l.icente rise in farm eog prices from April to May is larger than usual. In two of the years since 1940, the May price has been lower than the April figure, and in only one other recent year, 1939, did the rise exceed 1 cent. In part the rise may have been affected by the one half of 1 percent decline in April egg production compared with March this year. The usual production trend from March to April has been an increase of about 5 percent in farm egg production. The relatively large diversion of eggs to hatcheries, suggested as a factor in the price increase, was more than offset by the relatively small volume of eggs put in storage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation: May-June, 1950 In the first A months of 1950, egg production was 7 percent larger than a year earlier. Farm production of eggs in 1950 probably will be 5 or 6 percent above the [h7 billion dozens of 1949, and therefore probably will top the record of billion dozens. The 1939-13 average was bil lion dozens. Through the summer, monthly production of eggs probably will continue larger than a year earlier, in line with the larger number of layers, which on May'l was 6 percent larger than the year before.' Because of a reduction in 'the number of, pullets being raised this year, by the end of fall the nation's laying. Flock maybe a few percent smaller than last year, but that prospective, reduction may be largely offset by a higher\ rate of lay. This would continue past trends toward a sharply increased rate of lay in the fall and early winter months. Accordingly, monthly egg production in 1950 is likely to exceed or at least to equal output in every month of the year. In the fall, current egg production will be supplemented by supplies from commercial cold-storage stocks, which by mid-may were as large as the largest of the 1919 season, reported on July 1 for shell eggs and on August 1 for frozen. In view of these indications of Mpla supplies, and despite continued high consumer incomes, egg prices are expected to continue sharply lower than a year before. 'the seasonal recovery of prices later this year is likely to be slow. In mid-may, the U. S. Average farm price of eggs was cents per dozen, resulting in a 30. 6 cent average to date for 1950. Seasonally ad justed, this 5 month average is equivalent to an annual average price of about 33. 9 cents. -the average for the 12 months of was A5. 5 cents. Supplies of chicken meat from farm production are increasing seasonally and marketings' of broilers from specialized producing areas are large. The U. S. Average price received by farmers for chickens in mid-may was 22. 5 cents per pound. Prices of all classes of chickens, which as a whole have declined cents per pound over the past month, might have fallen further if not for the currently high prices for competing red meats. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation: October, 1949 The American poultry industry in 19h9 was at a production level about as high as any other peacetime year. This is true even considered relative'to the growing population of the United States. The prospective moderate reductions in numbers of young poultry in 1950 must be viewed in comparison with the large 19h9 numbers, which were exceeded only in the war years when this country undertook food supply responsibilities abroad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 140: Nov.-Dec., 1949 A record October egg production contributed to the unusual decline of egg prices during October and November, and production is continuing at a high rate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 110: April-May-June 1946 Commercial hatchery operations through early may 1946 were about 3 percent below'the corresponding period of 1945° Hatchings for flock replace monts were about equal to 1945, but substantial reductions occurred in outp of baby chicks for commercial broiler production. Chicks and young chickens on farms may 1 totaled 459 million, about the same as May 1, 1945. However a much smaller hatch is expected during June and July than in the same month of 1945 so that the total number of chickens raised in 1946 probably will be 5 to 10 percent below 1945. On the basis of past relationships, this would result in a moderate decrease in the number of hens and pullets on farms January 1, 1947 compared with January 1, 1946. Wholesale prices for chickens have advanced somewhat in recent weeks, and chicken prices in gen eral are expected to average higher than a year earlier during the next sev eral months because of the smaller supplies and stronger consumer demand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation: March, 1949 Farm chicken prices in mid-february, at 29 5 cents per pound, were 1. 2 cents lower than a month earlier but still 3. 5 cents higher than a year earlier.' nevertheless, the cents-per pound decline from January 15 to February 15 -was the largest on record for that month. This probably reflects toéa considerable extent the increasing production of commercial broilers during the winter months. Poultry supplies during this period are relatively larger than they used to be when storage stocks were the major source. 'weaknesses at this time of the year in prices received by farmers for chickens, principally hens indicate the high degree of competition between the various market classes and the increased importance of commercial broilers in the poultry meat supply. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 132: January 1949 Production of eggs in the fall and winter months has increased relative to spring. This change is due to the faster increase in rate of lay per bird in the october-january period compared with other months of the year. The upward trend in the rate of lay is primarily the result of progress in breeding and flock management. With this uptrend, the Nation's current egg requirements are being met with fewer layers than in earlier years, even when the increase in population is considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 128: June-July 1948 The number of layers on farms at the beginning of 1948 was 1 percent less than at the beginning of 1947. During the first half of this year the rate of culling was somewhat greater than a year earlier because of less favorable relationships between feed prices and egg prices. By June, the number of layers on farms was 4 percent less than in June 1947. The rate of production per bird during the first half of 1948, however, was at a record level. Total egg production during the first 6 months of 1948 was smaller than a year earlier by only 2 percent. Egg production will decrease. Seasonally through November. Output during the second half of the year will continue below 1947; however, it will be augmented'by the somewhat large r storage holdings of shell eggs which were accumulated during the second quarter of 1948. On July 1, the holdings of shell eggs in the United States totaled million cases compared with million cases on July 1, 1947. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 30: June 1, 1939 The feed - egg ratio (based on Chicago prices) has risen steadily during the past 2 months. This is in marked contrast to the sharp decline in the ra tio which occurred last year after April 16. During the 5 weeks ending April 15 of this year the ratio averaged 4 percent below the corresponding weeks of 1958, but during the first 5 weeks of May the ratio was 22 percent above last year and 5 percent above the 1928 - 57 average. In terms of eggs, it required about lé dozen more to purchase 100 pounds of poultry ration at Chicago during the week ending May 20 than in the corresponding week last year.
