Book excerpt: Banning the production, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages is commonly referred to in a wider sense as prohibition, and from 1920 to 1933 the United States of America undertook its own experiment with alcohol prohibition. Prohibition was a turbulent time for the United States. The Eighteenth Amendment banning the production, sale, and transportation of alcohol was ratified in 1919 in a post-World War I America and during the beginning of a great economic boon to the United States economy. There has been a lot of discussion regarding what life was life for people during the years of prohibition, including glamorizing certain aspects of the life like the bootlegging and the rise of organized crime and the mafia, but there are other important aspects of the years of prohibition that need to be focused on too. The politics involved with the enacting of, and eventual repeal of, prohibition need to be examined at every level of government. The idea of taking a look at the politics of prohibition is especially relevant to the state of Wisconsin as it was Wisconsin's own senator, and previously governor, John J. Blaine that proposed the Twenty-first Amendment to the constitution repealing the Eighteenth Amendment and once again allowing the production, sale, and transportation of alcohol in the United States.
