Book Zimbabwe Will Never be a Colony Again

Download or read book Zimbabwe Will Never be a Colony Again written by Munoda Mararike and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a thought-provoking original book, based on a wealth of empirical case studies of how Zimbabwe experienced illegal economic sanctions. It is a study of how the humanly constructed obstructions from external remittances/finance flows into the country to finance embargos or total financial blockages are deliberately created by so-called powerful governments to deal with an errand country. The infamous Zimbabwe Democracy Economic Recovery Act of 2001 (ZDERA) is part of a raft of punitive measures and discourses that the USA, UK and Europe used to make the economy, in the words of USs Chester Crooker scream. It is the same powerful countries who allow their Multinational Corporations to loot while they impose sanctions against African governments and their peoples to make them scream. The book is an insightful contribution on Africas contemporary post-colonial liberation politics of development economics. It focuses on Zimbabwe as a synthesis of microcosmic study that provides accessible in-depth analysis of key aspects of sanctions as a weapon of control wielded by the so-called powerful governments of the Global North. Zimbabwe was clobbered with post-independence economic sanctions after its land reform programme, which benefitted its mostly colonially dispossessed African citizens. The land reform was intended as a reversal of colonial injustice and a counter restitutive measure against imperialism. The book invites the reader to see power differently: as compassion and the capacity to right past wrongs by protecting all and sundry from inequality and poverty. Sanctions, even when called targeted, are non-discriminatory as they affect ordinary citizens with the same ferocity and savagery as against intended target, albeit often missing the target. Sanctions are lethal. Sanctions are a graveyard for the poor, weak and vulnerable. This is an idea of power that the Global North failed to grasp when they decided to punish the Mugabe government for daring to contemplate justice and restitution.

In November 1965 the white Rhodesian government headed by Prime Minister Ian D. Smith unilaterally declared itself independent. Ties with Britain which stretched back to the end of nineteenth century were severed, and Rhodesia, because of the nature of its action and the style of its domestic racial policy, became the pariah of the international community.

Book Politics of sanctions Impact of US and EU sanctions on the rights and well being of Zimbabweans

Download or read book Politics of sanctions Impact of US and EU sanctions on the rights and well being of Zimbabweans written by Chidiebere C. Ogbonna and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2015 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, grade: 10, University of Jaume I (UNESCO Chair of Philosophy for Peace, Jaume I University, Spain), course: Master of Philosophy in Peace, Conflict and Development, language: English, abstract: Sanctions have been referred to by the United Nations as a “tool for all seasons.” The rationale behind the imposition of economic sanctions is the hope to solve a conflict without mass suffering and other negative consequences associated with war. Thus sanctions are situated in lieu of warfare. Protagonist of sanctions perceive the measure to be a soft approach capable of compelling or pressuring an offender, mostly the government of a State to behave in line with the doctrine of the international community or the body imposing sanctions. Available empirical evidence shows that in general, sanctions have not been able to achieve its goals; instead their outcomes affect human security negatively. Against the humanitarian consequences of sanctions, the measure still maintains a favourable position in the “tool kit” of international diplomacy. Concerned by lack of sufficient understanding of the grave human suffering that arises from economic sanctions, this book seek to fill this information gap. Using Zimbabwe as a case study, this book analysis the impact of sanctions on the human rights and well-being of the civilian population, particularly their impact on the vulnerable groups within the Zimbabwean societies. Although sanctions have become a norm in international relations, this book queries the compatibility of sanctions with international humanitarian law and other human rights treaties and conventions. It serves to awaken policy makers, politico-socio-economic analysts, researchers and global citizens on how sanctions violate basic human rights of civilians and put their well-being and social mobility in stagnant danger.
