Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional distinction between military and political affairs in American life has become less significant as military officers increasingly participate with civilians in the formulation of national policies. In an examination of the impact of this change upon professional military education, the authors present a forthright analysis of military responsibility today, the growth of education for policy roles, the form and content of that education, and its relation to the over-all duties of the armed forces. They have used hundreds of interviews and questionnaires and studied carefully the history and programs of the military academies, ROTC, Command and Staff Schools, Armed Forces Staff College, National War College, three service War Colleges, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and other institutions. Originally published in 1957. Book Protecting Soldiers and Mothers

Download or read book Protecting Soldiers and Mothers written by Theda Skocpol and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a commonplace that the United States lagged behind the countries of Western Europe in developing modern social policies. But, as Theda Skocpol shows in this startlingly new historical analysis, the United States actually pioneered generous social spending for many of its elderly, disabled, and dependent citizens. During the late nineteenth century, competitive party politics in American democracy led to the rapid expansion of benefits for Union Civil War veterans and their families. Some Americans hoped to expand veterans' benefits into pensions for all of the needy elderly and social insurance for workingmen and their families. But such hopes went against the logic of political reform in the Progressive Era. Generous social spending faded along with the Civil War generation. Instead, the nation nearly became a unique maternalist welfare state as the federal government and more than forty states enacted social spending, labor regulations, and health education programs to assist American mothers and children. Remarkably, as Skocpol shows, many of these policies were enacted even before American women were granted the right to vote. Banned from electoral politics, they turned their energies to creating huge, nation-spanning federations of local women's clubs, which collaborated with reform-minded professional women to spur legislative action across the country. Blending original historical research with political analysis, Skocpol shows how governmental institutions, electoral rules, political parties, and earlier public policies combined to determine both the opportunities and the limits within which social policies were devised and changed by reformers and politically active social groups over the course of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By examining afresh the institutional, cultural, and organizational forces that have shaped U.S. social policies in the past, Protecting Soldiers and Mothers challenges us to think in new ways about what might be possible in the American future.

Book Political Training in the United States Army

Download or read book Political Training in the United States Army written by Stephen D. Wesbrook and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines two questions. First, why has the United States Army rejected the idea that political training can influence combat motivation and military efficiency while other armies, such as the West German and Soviet, invest heavily in political training. Second, is the U.S. Army correct in this rejection. The examination consists of four sections. The first identifies and defines the most common types of political training. The second describes the United States Army's experience with these types between 1917 and 1977. The third assesses the value of that experience both theoretically and empirically. Based on the preceding analysis, the final section concludes that the United States Army has rejected political training because of a negative historical experience, itself the product of misapplication, misunderstanding, and misinterpretations. However, political training-especially such types as civic education and foreign events orientation-can be very valuable in both war and peace if properly applied.

Book National Service Citizenship and Political Education

Download or read book National Service Citizenship and Political Education written by Eric B. Gorham and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1992-09-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the issues surrounding civilian national service policy from a fresh and original perspective. The author connects national service programs to the political theories of civic republicanism and communitarianism, assesses the practical consequences of these theories, and examines past youth service programs such as the CCC and Peace Corps to see if they are appropriate models or ideals for a national program. Gorham engages the issue of compulsory versus voluntary service and questions whether service tasks can instill a sense of “citizenship” in young people, as defenders of the program claim. Using the work of Michel Foucault, Charles Taylor, Carole Pateman, and others, he suggests that national service, as presently planned, will not create the “citizen” so much as a post-industrial and gendered subject. In the concluding chapters, he presents an argument for a democratic national service and offers an alternative program for policymakers to consider.
