Book excerpt: This book analyzes the struggle of working people for improvement in minimum wage in Nigeria. It also looks into how working people are being shortchanged by the capitalist government and employers under the guise of implementing minimum wage. It links the issue of minimum wage in Nigeria with the political economy of Nigeria as a third world country. It was written as a contribution to the intellectual and ideological debates in working class and anti-capitalist movement. It not only raises issues concerning the political economy of Nigeria's capitalism but also the strategies needed by the working class movement and activists in challenging this obviously unacceptable capitalist state. Centrally, this book argues for a revolutionary, democratically organized working people's party to champion this cause. It is the contention of the writer that working people cannot continue to vote their enemies to power every four years, only to fight the anti-workers' policies of those governments. Why don't they have their party? Indeed, strike actions in themselves raise the question of political power as the whole country is at a standstill. Globally, movements are growing against capitalism, one hopes this book contribute to the growing consciousness of working class people and youths for a better society, away from the current iniquitous capitalist system, especially its backward form we have in Nigeria, nay third world countries, and the world at large. This book is a vital material for workers, labour activists, trade unionists, civil society practitioners, scholars and academics, students of history, politics and social science, and all those interested in the political economy of Nigeria.

Book The Political Economy of the Minimum Wage

Download or read book The Political Economy of the Minimum Wage written by Bruno Jimenez and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I evaluate the effects of the 2016 minimum wage hike in Peru on the approval of government performance. My identification strategy exploits the regional heterogeneity in the share of workers directly affected by the increase to implement a series of difference-in-differences specifications. For every percentage point increase in the share of treated workers, the approval of the central government (i.e., the president) also increases by a percentage point. I find a partial spillover effect to other levels of government. These results are robust to a number of alternative specifications and falsification tests, and cannot be explained by the results of the 2016 presidential elections. My findings suggest that the main mechanisms behind these causal effects are improvements in subjective living conditions and observed labor market performance.

Book Taxation Without Representation The Political Economy of State Minimum Wage Levels

Download or read book Taxation Without Representation The Political Economy of State Minimum Wage Levels written by Kawika Pierson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minimum wage hikes express our sympathy for the working poor and our solidarity with them. But their importance is largely symbolic. The net effects of moderate increases in wage floors are vanishingly small. Statutory wage minimums work like taxes on labor, with their proceeds paid directly to low-wage workers and their costs shifted forward to consumers. Consequently, their distributional effects on the burden side are like those of sales taxes. Variations in state minimums appear to be driven in good measure by a combination of partisan political control and opportunities for burden shifting to nonresidents.

Book The Fundamentals of Minimum Wage Fixing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual draws on the ILO's comprehensive database containing the principal legal provisions and minimum wage fixing mechanisms in 100 countries. The minimum wage has had a long and turbulent history, and this study sheds light on its intricacies by providing a thorough overview of the institutions and practices in different countries. It outlines the main topics for debate concerning the effects of minimum wages on major social and economic variables such as employment, wage inequality, and poverty. The book considers the various procedures countries use for implementation, including the criteria employed to fix the minimum wage, and how they are linked to specific country objectives. It then measures the efficiency of the minimum wage, and focuses on its impact on employment as a major political issue. For the benefit of non-specialists, the validity of econometric models and their results are examined.

Book Making Africa Work

Download or read book Making Africa Work written by Greg Mills and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sub-Saharan Africa faces three big inter-related challenges over the next generation. It will double its population to two billion by 2045. By then more than half of Africans will be living in cities. And this group of mostly young people will be connected with each other and the world through mobile devices. Properly harnessed and planned for, this is a tremendously positive force for change. Without economic growth and jobs, it could prove a political and social catastrophe. Old systems of patronage and of muddling through will no longer work because of these population increases. Instead, if leaders want to continue in power, they will have to promote economic growth in a more dynamic manner. Making Africa Work is a first-hand account and handbook of how to ensure growth beyond commodities and create jobs in the continent.

Book The Labor Market and Economic Adjustment

Download or read book The Labor Market and Economic Adjustment written by Pierre-Richard Agénor and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1995-11-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the role of the labor market in the transmission process of adjustment policies in developing countries. It begins by reviewing the recent evidence regarding the functioning of these markets. It then studies the implications of wage inertia, nominal contracts, labor market segmentation, and impediments to labor mobility for stabilization policies. The effect of labor market reforms on economic flexibility and the channels through which labor market imperfections alter the effects of structural adjustment measures are discussed next. The last part of the paper identifies a variety of issues that may require further investigation, such as the link between changes in relative wages and the distributional effects of adjustment policies.

Book The Political Economy of Colonialism and Nation Building in Nigeria

Download or read book The Political Economy of Colonialism and Nation Building in Nigeria written by Samuel Ojo Oloruntoba and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the ways in which colonialism continues to define the political economy of Nigeria sixty years after gaining political independence from the British. It also establishes a link between colonialism and the continued agitation for restructuring the political arrangement of the country. The contributions offer various perspectives on how the forceful amalgamation of disparate units and diverse nationalities have undermined the realization of the development potential of Nigeria. The book is divided into two parts. The first part interrogates the political economy of colonialism and the implications of this on economic development in contemporary Nigeria. The second part examines nation-building, governance, and development in a postcolonial state. The failure of the postcolonial political elites to ensure inclusive governance has continued to foster centrifugal and centripetal forces that question the legitimacy of the state. The forces have deepened calls for secession, accentuated conflicts and predispose the country to possible disintegration. A new government approach is required that would ensure equal representation, access to power and equitable distribution of resources.
