Download or read book The Shi i Imamate written by S. Makarem and published by I. B. Tauris. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tathbit al-imama written by the Fatimid Caliph-Imam al-Man?ur (334–341/946–953) is an important early Ismaili treatise on the legitimacy of the imamate of ?Ali b. Abi ?alib and that of the Ismaili imams from among his progeny. As one of the earliest Ismaili works on this crucial and fundamental Shi?i subject it can thus be considered a major treatise on the doctrine of the imamate. The Tathbit al-imama does not deal with the metaphysical significance of the imamate. Rather, it concentrates on its legal and historical aspects, using proofs derived from the Qur?an, ?adith and logical arguments. In this regard, it is directed at the Islamic public in all its different religious affiliations. In the way it discusses the necessity of the imamate itself, the right of the imams to the vicegerency of the Prophet, and the validity of divine designation in contrast to election by the umma, it is likely that the Tathbit al-imama could have also meant to serve as a guide book for the Ismailis in legitimising the ?Alid state ruled by the Fatimid imam-caliphs. This edition has been compiled from two manuscripts of the Tathbit, both of which are now in the collections of the library of The Institute of Ismaili Studies, with the Arabic text carefully translated into idiomatic English to retain the character and flavor of the original text as much as possible.

Download or read book Faith and World written by Mohammad N. Miraly and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith and World explores the way contemporary Ismaili institutions articulate the ethics of the Qur’an using the language of modern liberal discourse. It is the fi rst comprehensive study of contemporary Ismaili social and political thought. The Ismailis are a transnational Muslim community headed by the 49th Ismaili Imam, Aga Khan IV, who views liberal pluralism as supporting the tenets of ethical Islamic living in the present day. Contemporary Ismaili thought views the Ismaili tradition as connected to a historical past deriving from Qur’anic principles and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad and his heirs, the Shi`a Imams. Thus, contemporary Ismailism’s focus on liberal values like democracy, pluralism, and education are seen as contemporary forms of eternal Qur’anic ethical principles. The book furthers Western understanding of Islam, a key to overcoming misconceptions about the interconnected relationships between today’s converging civilizations. Faith and World incorporates the following: • a review of both popular and academic literature about the Aga Khan and the Ismailis; • an exploration and explanation of the essentially Ismaili approach to Qur’anic exegesis; • a survey of the work of the AKDN in Afghanistan, serving as the basis to explore the Aga Khan’s ethical impetus for the existence and work of the network; • a look at the core liberal commitments that inform contemporary Ismaili thought, such as democracy, pluralism, and civic education; and • an examination of the emergence of the transnational Ismaili community and the role of the Imamate in fostering a sense of loyalty and unity among the diverse ethnocultural Ismaili communities.

Book excerpt: This authoritative book traces the history and doctrinal development of the Isma'ili movement from its origins to the present day, a period of twelve centuries. It is the first comprehensive synthesis of the scattered results of modern scholarship on the subject and it draws on numerous primary and secondary texts, and particularly a number of private Isma'ili manuscripts that have recently become available. All the major phases of Isma'ili history are covered. From the pre-Fatimid period, Dr. Daftary conducts a detailed investigation through the Fatimid "golden age" and the troubled Musta'li-Tayyibi period up to the spiritual and physical strengths of Mizari Isma'ilism in Syria and Iran before the onslaught of the Mongols. The last part of the book discusses the modern developments of Isma'ilism, particularly in Iran and on the Indian subcontinent. For all students of Islamic and Middle Eastern history this volume will serve as the most definitive account yet of the history of the Isma'ilis and their movement.

Book The History of Islamic Political Thought

Download or read book The History of Islamic Political Thought written by Antony Black and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Islamic Political Thought offers a full description and an interpretation of political philosophy from early Islam to the current age of Fundamentalism (622 AD to 2000 AD). Antony Black takes the same approach as scholars usually do for the history of Western political thought, examining the mentality, cultural milieu, and political background of thinkers and statesmen. He covers the relationship of politics to religion, law, ethics, philosophy, and statecraft, as expressed through treatises, occasional writings, official rhetoric, popular slogans, and other evidence of how people thought about authority and order.

Book The Ismailis in the Middle Ages

Download or read book The Ismailis in the Middle Ages written by Shafique N. Virani and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-19 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "None of that people should be spared, not even the babe in its cradle." With these chilling words, the Mongol warlord Genghis Khan declared his intention to destroy the Ismailis, one of the most intellectually and politically significant Muslim communities of medieval Islamdom. The massacres that followed convinced observers that this powerful voice of Shi'i Islam had been forever silenced. Little was heard of these people for centuries, until their recent and dramatic emergence from obscurity. Today they exist as a dynamic and thriving community established in over twenty-five countries. Yet the interval between what appeared to have been their total annihilation, and their modern, seemingly phoenix-like renaissance, has remained shrouded in mystery. Drawing on an astonishing array of sources gathered from many countries around the globe, The Ismailis in the Middle Ages: A History of Survival, A Search for Salvation is a richly nuanced and compelling study of the murkiest portion of this era. In probing the period from the dark days when the Ismaili fortresses in Iran fell before the marauding Mongol hordes, to the emergence at Anjudan of the Ismaili Imams who provided a spiritual centre to a scattered community, this work explores the motivations, passions and presumptions of historical actors. With penetrating insight, Shafique N. Virani examines the rich esoteric thought that animated the Ismailis and enabled them to persevere. A work of remarkable erudition, this landmark book is essential reading for scholars of Islamic history and spirituality, Shi'ism and Iran. Both specialists and informed lay readers will take pleasure not only in its scholarly perception, but in its lively anecdotes, quotations of delightful poetry, and gripping narrative style. This is an extraordinary book of historical beauty and spiritual vision.
