Book Ismaili History and Intellectual Traditions

Download or read book Ismaili History and Intellectual Traditions written by Farhad Daftary and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ismailis represent an important Shiʿi Muslim community with rich intellectual and literary traditions. The complex history of the Ismailis dates back to the second/eighth century when they separated from other Shiʿi groups under the leadership of their own imams. Soon afterwards, the Ismailis organised a dynamic, revolutionary movement, known as the daʿwa or mission, for uprooting the Sunni regime of the Abbasids and establishing a new Shiʿi caliphate headed by the Ismaili imam. By the end of the third/ninth century, the Ismaili dāʿīs, operating secretly on behalf of the movement, were active in almost every region of the Muslim world, from Central Asia and Persia to Yemen, Egypt and the Maghrib. This book brings together a collection of the best works from Farhad Daftary, one of the foremost authorities in the field. The studies cover a range of specialised topics related to Ismaili history, historiography, institutions, theology, law and philosophy, amongst other intellectual traditions elaborated by the Ismailis. The collation of these invaluable studies into one book will be of great interest to the Ismaili community as well to anyone studying Islam in general, or Shiʿi Islam in particular.

Book Work Is for the People

Download or read book Work Is for the People written by Joseph Burrell and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work is for the People is for everyone who cares about civil rights, human rights, and the rights of working people and consumers as well as those who believe that government is not automatically evil and incompetent. The author reminds us that in a democracy, the system of work and the economy are supposed to be designed to benefit the people, not owners and bosses; he shows that corporatism is another name for fascism, and calls for a fairly-regulated capitalism in place of the travesty of the unelected, unregulated, and predatory capitalism we have now. Despite its strong language, this is not a radical or extremist book. Readers interested in current events, the economy, politics from the local to the international arena, war and peace, and the place of religion in society need to be conversant with the nature of the various belief systems that drive public discourse. This book is an equal-opportunity offender, skewering capitalism, communism, christianism, secularism, conservatism, liberalism, libertarianism, fascism, and their offshoots. It defines and explores each of these isms and describes their relationships to one another, and the relationship between their promises and their reality, from a liberal democratic viewpoint. Distorted and misused for at least since the rise of McCarthyism and the start of the cold war, they have corrupted American politics and undermined democratic liberalism everywhere in the western world and even in Eastern Europe. The book is packed with quotations from mainstream media sources which, if you read closely, will acknowledge the darnedest things. See for yourself.

Book The German Stranger

Download or read book The German Stranger written by William H. F. Altman and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-06-07 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leo Strauss's connection with Martin Heidegger and Carl Schmitt suggests a troubling proximity to National Socialism but a serious critique of Strauss must begin with F. H. Jacobi. While writing his dissertation on this apparently Christian opponent of the Enlightenment, Strauss discovered the tactical principles that would characterize his lifework: writing between the lines, a faith-based critique of rationalism, the deliberate secularization of religious language for irreligious purposes, and an "all or nothing" antagonism to middling solutions. Especially the latter is distinctive of his Zionist writings in the 1920s where Strauss engaged in an ongoing polemic against Cultural Zionism, attacking it first from an orthodox, and then from an atheist's perspective. In his last Zionist article (1929), Strauss mentions "the Machiavellian Zionism of a Nordau that would not fear to use the traditional hope for a Messiah as dynamite." By the time of his "change of orientation," National Socialism was being led by a nihilistic "Messiah" while Strauss had already radicalized Schmitt's "political theology" and Heidegger's deconstruction of the ontological Tradition. Central to Strauss's advance beyond the smartest Nazis is his "Second Cave" in which he claimed modern thought is imprisoned: only by escaping Revelation can we recover "natural ignorance." By using pseudo-Platonic imagery to illustrate what anti-Semites called "Jewification," Strauss attempted to annihilate the common ground, celebrated by Hermann Cohen, between Judaism and Platonism. Unlike those who attacked Plato for devaluing nature at the expense of the transcendent Idea, the émigré Strauss effectively employed a new "Plato" who was no more a Platonist than Nietzsche or Heidegger had been. Central to Strauss's "Platonic political philosophy" is the mysterious protagonist of Plato's Laws whom Strauss accurately recognized as the kind of Socrates whose fear of death would have caused him to flee the hemlock. Any reader who recognizes the unbridgeable gap between the real Socrates and Plato’s Athenian Stranger will understand why “the German Stranger” is the principal theoretician of an atheistic re-enactment of religion, of which genus National Socialism is an ultra-modern species.

Book excerpt: This text provides a survey of the major isms that have shaped and reshaped the political landscape of our century, and also shows how these ideologies originated and how they have changed over time. In addition to exploring such ideologies as liberalism, conservatism, and socialism, this text offers students a sense of history, structure, supporting arguments, and internal complexity of these and other more recent ideologies. To do this, the authors have constructed a four-fold framework within which to compare, contrast and analyze various ideologies. The text also shows how each ideology interprets democracy and freedom.
