Book Classical Chinese Poetry in Singapore

Download or read book Classical Chinese Poetry in Singapore written by Bing Wang and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the essence of Chinese traditional culture, classical Chinese poetry in Singapore played a very important role in the social and cultural development of Singapore’s Chinese community. Numerous poems depicted the unique scenery of tropical rainforest and the customs with a Nanyang flavor, recorded the various historical events from the colonial era, the World War II to the independent nation, and reflected the poets’ multiple feelings. This book sketches out the brief history of classical Chinese poetry in Singapore over a hundred years, and focuses on the complex identity of poets from different generations, the function of literary societies in the construction of cultural space and the influence of modern media on the development of classical Chinese poetry based on the text interpretation. In addition, the author attempts to define different types of poetry writing using diaspora literature and Sinophone literature. The discussion of these topics will not only expand the research horizon of Chinese literature, but also provide a meaningful reference to the studies of the worldwide Chinese overseas, especially in Southeast Asia.

Download or read book The Orchid Folios written by Mok Zining and published by Ethos Books. This book was released on 2022-08-12 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “When you take an orchid out of its pot, you must first loosen the roots’ hold on the soil. Late last evening as I unravelled the braids of the shattered phalaenopsis, I saw how the ends were white and shrivelled from neglect. You have to do it gently—it’s like combing hair. I remember Mum’s fingers running through mine, and mine through hers, until the final months when all of it started to fall.” A pot shatters. An arrangement falls apart. A florist finds herself amidst the scattered leaves of history. At once a poetry collection and a documentary novella, The Orchid Folios reimagines the orchid as a living, breathing document of history: a history that enmeshes the personal, colonial, linguistic, and biotechnological with the Vanda Miss Joaquim, the symbol of Singapore’s postcolonial hybridity. While the Orchid has shaped the fantastical narratives that govern our multiracial City in a Garden, it continues to shape-shift and bloom on its own terms, challenging us to imagine a decolonised Singapore. This is the organism at the heart of The Orchid Folios—by turns stark and unruly, documenting and challenging the narratives that are the roots of our national consciousness.

Book excerpt: STRANGERS GIVE ME THREE WORDS AND I WEAVE THEM INTO POEMS. This is the premise of my poetry. It's about trying to do someone justice even though I know next to nothing about them. Then eyebrows are raised, a small hint of a smile.... Even though these poems are written for people you have never met, you'll feel like you already know them. It's as though this book was written for you. Our longings are universal, you see. You are not alone. Here, the weight of experiences is made vivid in spilled ink.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Singapore Literature Prize (Poetry 2020) What do we expect of an author who is unapologetically female? What do we expect of consuming art in general? Should a work be easy, should a work be safe? Marylyn Tan’s debut volume, GAZE BACK, complicates ideas of femininity, queerness, and the occult. The feminine grotesque subverts the restrictions placed upon the feminine body to be attractive and its subjection to notions of the ideal. The occultic counterpoint to organised religion, then, becomes a way toward techniques of empowering the marginalised. GAZE BACK, ultimately, is an instruction book, a grimoire, a call to insurrection—to wrest power back from the social structures that serve to restrict, control and distribute it amongst those few privileged above the disenfranchised.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology of poems is based on personal experiences, childhood memories, travels, work, Singaporean local culture, observations, imagination and an interview. The poems give an interesting angle to the subjects, sometimes funny, but always positive. Quite a few poems emanate from a joy of tasting and eating food. Some poems are about the things we treasure, personal strength and lovable animals. Some poems take you to other countries for a measure of freshness. These poems were written around 2013-14 and 2015-2020. The subjects are precious treasures to me - their sights, sounds, smells and feelings aroused. Some interesting personalities of Singapore are included. By publishing the poems, I hope the reader will be enthused, enthralled and amused. I do not describe the poems at this point in order to let the readers appreciate the poems later when they actually read the book.

Book excerpt: One Fierce Hour is Alfian Sa’at’s first and breakout work. It was hailed as ‘truly a landmark’ for Singaporean poetry when it was published in 1998 when the poet was just 21 years old. Since, then it has been kept in print and has entered the list of canonical anthologies of Singapore literature. The collection contains the anti-anthem “Singapore You Are Not My Country” written well before social media gave voice to dissent and different views of Singapore. Alfian remains an intelligent writer with an unabashedly social and political voice. He has written 37 plays, 3 works of prose and 2 poetry anthologies.
