DR WILLIAM BAGSHOT STEVEHS, Of HEi'TON, DERBYSHIRE, WRITTEN IN 1783. If yet, unbless'd with learning's guardian aids, I rov'd the labyrinths of Aonian shades, And in the gloomy and the silent hour Wove the dun foliage of their cypress bower, The oak-crown'd Chief, and laurel'd Warrior's tomb Solemn to strew;--and cropt their floral bloom For a fair votary's urn, my priz'd reward Lives in the smile of Repton's classic Bard. 1. 5. Elegy on captain Cook--Monody on major Andre, 1. 7. Monody on lady Miller. Yet not the letter'd smile's inspiring ray, When most its warmth shall gild my pensive lay, Such intellectual luxury can impart, Or pour such sweet sensations on my heart, As when, ingenious Lyrist, brightly shine Through the clear medium of thy classic line, On every hill, and vale, and plain, and grove, The seraph forms of Beauty, Truth, and Love. Sing on, sweet Bard! for to thy happy lyre, When beams the setting sun with chasten'd fire, And evening clouds, half pierc'd with light, have spread Their floating purple round his golden head, 1. 6. Alluding to the Retirement, published by Mr Stevens, in 1782, the first of a small, but beautiful collection of poems, printed for Ab. Portal of the Strand; Faultier, of New Bond-street; and Kearsley, No. 46, Fleet-street. This work went through two editions, though it met the utmost injustice that dullness and spleen could produce, in one of the leading Reviewers. No compositions, especially those of so young a man, are without imperfections. The few defects of RetireMent were assiduously pointed out, and exaggerated, and many unexceptionable lines and expressions clumsily ridiculed; while the numerous passages of striking and nnborrowed beauty, were passed over in silence; but the...

  • Author : Emma Gleadhill
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press

Download or read book Taking travel home written by Emma Gleadhill and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth-century, elite British women had an unprecedented opportunity to travel. Taking travel home uncovers the souvenir culture these women developed around the texts and objects they brought back with them to realise their ambitions in the arenas of connoisseurship, friendship and science. Key characters include forty-three-year-old Hester Piozzi (Thrale), who honeymooned in Italy; thirty-one-year-old Anna Miller, who accompanied her husband on a Grand Tour; Dorothy Richardson, who undertook various tours of England from the ages of twelve to fifty-two; and the sisters Katherine and Martha Wilmot, who travelled to Russia in their late twenties. The supreme tourist of the book, the political salon hostess Lady Elizabeth Holland, travelled to many countries with her husband, including Paris, where she met Napoleon, and Spain during the Peninsular War. Using a methodology informed by literary and design theory, art history, material culture studies and tourism studies, the book examines a wide range of objects, from painted fans “of the ruins of Rome for a sequin apiece” and the Pope’s “bless’d beads”, to lava from Vesuvius and pieces of Stonehenge. It argues that the rise of the souvenir is representative of female agency, as women used their souvenirs to form spaces in which they could create and control their own travel narratives.

Book Early Anthropocene Literature in Britain 1750 1884

Download or read book Early Anthropocene Literature in Britain 1750 1884 written by Seth T. Reno and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book questions when exactly the Anthropocene began, uncovering an “early Anthropocene” in the literature, art, and science of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain. In chapters organized around the classical elements of Earth, Fire, Water, and Air, Seth Reno shows how literary writers of the Industrial Era borrowed from scientists to capture the changes they witnessed to weather, climate, and other systems. Poets linked the hellish flames of industrial furnaces to the magnificent, geophysical force of volcanic explosions. Novelists and painters depicted cloud formations and polluted urban atmospheres as part of the emerging discipline of climate science. In so doing, the subjects of Reno’s study—some famous, some more obscure—gave form to a growing sense of humans as geophysical agents, capable of reshaping Earth itself. Situated at the interaction of literary studies, environmental studies, and science studies, Early Anthropocene Literature in Britain tells the story of how writers heralded, and wrestled with, Britain’s role in sparking the now-familiar “epoch of humans.”
