Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As well as producing one of the finest of all poetic traditions, ancient Greek culture produced a major tradition of poetic theory and criticism. Halliwell's volume offers a series of detailed and challenging interpretations of some of the defining authors and texts in the history of ancient Greek poetics: the Homeric epics, Aristophanes' Frogs, Plato's Republic, Aristotle's Poetics, Gorgias's Helen, Isocrates' treatises, Philodemus' On Poems, and Longinus On the Sublime. The volume's fundamental concern is with how the Greeks conceptualized the experience of poetry and debated the values of that experience. The book's organizing theme is a recurrent Greek dialectic between ideas of poetry as, on the one hand, a powerfully enthralling experience in its own right (a kind of 'ecstasy') and, on the other, a medium for the expression of truths which can exercise lasting influence on its audiences' views of the world. Citing a wide range of modern scholarship, and making frequent connections with later periods of literary theory and aesthetics, Halliwell questions many orthodoxies and received opinions about the texts analysed. The resulting perspective casts new light on ways in which the Greeks attempted to make sense of the psychology of poetic experience - including the roles of emotion, ethics, imagination, and knowledge - in the life of their culture.

Book The Content of Our Character

Download or read book The Content of Our Character written by Shelby Steele and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1991-07-19 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this controversial essay collection, award-winning writer Shelby Stelle illuminates the origins of the current conflict in race relations--the increase in anger, mistrust, and even violence between black and whites. With candor and persuasive argument, he shows us how both black and white Americans have become trapped into seeing color before character, and how social policies designed to lessen racial inequities have instead increased them. The Content of Our Character is neither "liberal" nor "conservative," but an honest, courageous look at America's most enduring and wrenching social dilemma.

Book excerpt: Well I was sitting down after the release of The Poetic Truth in October 2009 thinking why stop with one book. Knowing the first book is about my entire life far as I can remember with Christ. Also knowing that my life isn't over and God has a plan for me so I got out some more paper and found a pen lying around some where and started the second book that just so happens to be a part two from the first book. Believing in that alone and the situations I encounter in this book someone can skip that mistake on their life because I feel like I have lived it for them. Just as brother Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 10:1, now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are (to) come.

Book excerpt: A child raised in the projects of Watts CA. Shared a two bedroom house with 10 other brothers and sisters.Like many other young kids in Watts, I saw that selling drugs was my way out, but would later come to understand that selling drugs was my hitch to prison. With half of my adult life spent behind bars, I began to ask God to forgive me for my sin and give me wisdom that I could help my people untangle this madness that was put upon my people. What I write came in a vision two nights later. They're not my words, it is He who gave them to me.
