Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the winner of the 2015 Man Booker International Prize A novel of awesome beauty and power by the Hungarian master, Laszla Krasznahorkai. Winner of a 2005 PEN Translation Fund Award. War and War, Laszla Krasznahorkai's second novel in English from New Directions, begins at a point of danger: on a dark train platform Korim is on the verge of being attacked by thuggish teenagers and robbed; and from here, we are carried along by the insistent voice of this nervous clerk. Desperate, at times almost mad, but also keenly empathic, Korim has discovered in a small Hungarian town's archives an antique manuscript of startling beauty: it narrates the epic tale of brothers-in-arms struggling to return home from a disastrous war. Korim is determined to do away with himself, but before he can commit suicide, he feels he must escape to New York with the precious manuscript and commit it to eternity by typing it all on the world-wide web. Following Korim with obsessive realism through the streets of New York (from his landing in a Bowery flophouse to his moving far uptown with a mad interpreter), War and War relates his encounters with a fascinating range of humanity, a world torn between viciousness and mysterious beauty. Following the eight chapters of War and War is a short "prequel acting as a sequel," "Isaiah," which brings us to a dark bar, years before in Hungary, where Korim rants against the world and threatens suicide. Written like nothing else (turning single sentences into chapters), War and War affirms W. G. Sebald's comment that Krasznahorkai's prose "far surpasses all the lesser concerns of contemporary writing."

Book Muhammad Iqbal s Romanticism of Power

Download or read book Muhammad Iqbal s Romanticism of Power written by Stephan Popp and published by Dr Ludwig Reichert. This book was released on 2004 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Summary: This book is a research on the Persian poetry of Muhammad Iqbal, whom Pakistan chose as its national poet. It specifies the position of these poems between tradition and modernity as well as the appeal of these poems to Iqbal's contemporaries. Based on structural text analysis, aesthetics of reception and the semiotics of Umberto Eco, it proves that the message of the poems in Message of the East and Persian Psalms is clearly romantic. This romanticism is an adaption of national romanticism and can be named a pan-islamic romanticism of power as opposed to nature romanticism. The traditional forms of the poems turn out to be mere tools to render this message plausible. Using traditional rhetorics in order to convey a thoroughly modern content, Iqbal succeeded in attaching the muslims of India to the discourses of panislamism and self-governance and in motivating them for joining India's independence movement.

Book You Are Here

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Pollock
  • Publisher : The Porcupine's Quill
  • Release : 2012-11-15
  • ISBN : 0889843570
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book You Are Here written by James Pollock and published by The Porcupine's Quill. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northrop Frye wrote that for Canadian poets the question of identity isn't so much `Who am I?' as `Where is here?' In his ground-breaking collection of essays, You Are Here, James Pollock gives his answer: that where we are as a literary culture has a great deal to do with our relationship to elsewhere. For far too long, Canadians have refused to read our poetry in the larger international context of poetry as an art, leaving our poets isolated and ignored. Pollock sets out to situate our verse on the map of world poetry – a map which, like one of those incomplete globes from the sixteenth century, still leaves Canada largely uncharted. Acutely intelligent and unflinchingly honest in its judgements, You Are Here is an eye-opening guide to the new world of Canadian poetry, sensitively exploring the work of such poets as Anne Carson, Daryl Hine, Jeffery Donaldson, Karen Solie and Eric Ormsby. The collection ends with a witty treatise on good criticism, and a passionate and learned reconsideration of poetic values, making You Are Here an essential companion for students and lovers of Canadian poetry everywhere.

Book Mountain Home The Wilderness Poetry of Ancient China

Download or read book Mountain Home The Wilderness Poetry of Ancient China written by David Hinton and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2005-05-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest and most extensive literary engagement with wilderness in human history, Mountain Home is vital poetry that feels utterly contemporary. China's tradition of "rivers-and-mountains" poetry stretches across millennia. This is a plain-spoken poetry of immediate day-to-day experience, and yet seems most akin to China's grand landscape paintings. Although its wisdom is ancient, rooted in Taoist and Zen thought, the work feels utterly contemporary, especially as rendered here in Hinton's rich and accessible translations. Mountain Home collects poems from 5th- through 13th-century China and includes the poets Li Po, Po Chu-i and Tu Fu. The "rivers-and-mountains" tradition covers a remarkable range of topics: comic domestic scenes, social protest, travel, sage recluses, and mountain landscapes shaped into forms of enlightenment. And within this range, the poems articulate the experience of living as an organic part of the natural world and its processes. In an age of global ecological disruption and mass extinction, this tradition grows more urgently important every day. Mountain Home offers poems that will charm and inform not just readers of poetry, but also the large community of readers who are interested in environmental awareness.
