Does she forget the trysts we used to keep, When dead leaves rustled on autumnal ground, Or the lone garret, whence she banished sleep With threats of silver sound? Does she forget how shone the happy eyes When they beheld her, - how the eager tongue Plied its swift oar through wave-like harmonies, To reach her where she sung? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaves From the Diary of an Impressionist, 1911: Early Writings After a romantic though somewhat vague Odyssey of misfortune, Hearn fi nally emerges in Cincinnati at the age of twenty as Old semi-colon, ' a proof-reader and budding journalist by profession, a 'flame-hearted' artist in words by aspir ation. His appearance at this time, as a striking bearded portrait shows, was that of a Parisian poet not yet 'arrived'; and that side of his temperament, which later made him style himself, half in irony, half in penitence, 'a vicious, French-hearted scalawag, ' was then, perhaps, most restive. Book Anthologies of British Poetry

Download or read book Anthologies of British Poetry written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Tottel's Miscellany (1557) to the last twentieth-century Oxford Book of English Verse (1999), anthologies have been a prime institution for the preservation and mediation of poetry. The importance of anthologies for creating and re-creating the canon of English poetry, for introducing ‘new' programmes of poetry, as a record of changing poetic fashions, audience tastes and reading practices, or as a profitable literary commodity has often been asserted. Despite its impact, however, the poetry anthology in itself has attracted surprisingly little critical interest in Britain or elsewhere in the English-speaking world. This volume is the first publication to explore the largely unmapped field of poetry anthologies in Britain. Essays written from a wide range of perspectives in literary and cultural studies, and the point of view of poets, editors, publishers and cultural institutions, aim to do justice to the typological, functional and historical variety with which this form of publication has manifested itself - from early modern print culture to the postmodern age of the world wide web.

Book American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting 1834 1853

Download or read book American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting 1834 1853 written by Meredith L. McGill and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The antebellum period has long been identified with the belated emergence of a truly national literature. And yet, as Meredith L. McGill argues, a mass market for books in this period was built and sustained through what we would call rampant literary piracy: a national literature developed not despite but because of the systematic copying of foreign works. Restoring a political dimension to accounts of the economic grounds of antebellum literature, McGill unfolds the legal arguments and political struggles that produced an American "culture of reprinting" and held it in place for two crucial decades. In this culture of reprinting, the circulation of print outstripped authorial and editorial control. McGill examines the workings of literary culture within this market, shifting her gaze from first and authorized editions to reprints and piracies, from the form of the book to the intersection of book and periodical publishing, and from a national literature to an internally divided and transatlantic literary marketplace. Through readings of the work of Dickens, Poe, and Hawthorne, McGill seeks both to analyze how changes in the conditions of publication influenced literary form and to measure what was lost as literary markets became centralized and literary culture became stratified in the early 1850s. American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting, 1834-1853 delineates a distinctive literary culture that was regional in articulation and transnational in scope, while questioning the grounds of the startlingly recent but nonetheless powerful equation of the national interest with the extension of authors' rights.
