Book Schiller s Poems

Download or read book Schiller s Poems written by Friedrich Schiller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schiller's Poems: Edited With Introduction and Notes All that a poet can give us is his individuality. This must therefore be worthy of exhibition to the world and to posterity. To dignify this personality as much as possible, to refine it until it attains the purest and noblest humanity, this must be his first and para mount concern, before he may venture to appeal to the sympathy of worthy men. Schiller himself bears triumphantly this severe test, which he applied with excessive rigor to an older contemporary in his review of Bilrger's lyric poetry. The main purpose of the present volume is to present Schiller's personality as expressed in his poems; a personality that compelled the homage and won the affection of such men as Humboldt and Goethe, and that through a century full of vicissitudes and rich in literary development has made Schiller always in the widest sense the best beloved of German authors. There have been periods of violent reaction from Schiller's literary theory and manner; but the attacks made upon him have always been either conscious or involuntary tributes to the power of his individuality and of his influence; and none of them have ever availed to shake his popularity or to drag him down from his eminence as the sharer with Goethe of the highest glory in German literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of Schiller: Complete If a translator from the German Classics be so fortu nate as to attract but a single reader by his labors, Who will follow him with ever growing interest, Who will learn to appreciate an Author interpreted by him, so as to induce such a study of the language as will furnish a free perusal of S'chi-ller as Schiller wrote it; then is the translator well repaid for his arduous, and somewhat un thankful task; then 18 his mission, in a great measure), ful filled. A metaphrase, if at all poetical, has generally been preferred to a paraphrase. So we consider Schiller a model approaching too near perfection, to be improved by any translator, however great as an Author. Although we admire grace and brilliancy of diction not less than the most fastidious, yet, when it becomes absolutely nec essa'ry to make a sacrifice, either of the poetry or the sense, in a poetical translation, we would far rather see the senti ment correctly rendered, though not b1eath1n0' the high est poetry, than something the Author never said or meant, most exquisitely expressed - ea fhomely truth being prefer able to a gilded falsehood.
