Book excerpt: This new edition of The Collected Poems of W.B.Yeats includes all of the poems authorised for publication by Yeats in his lifetime. From skilful retellings of ancient Irish myths and legends to passionate meditations on the demands and rewards of youth and old age, these exquisite, occasionally whimsical songs of love, nature and art stand in dramatic contrast to the sombre and angry poems of life in a nation torn by war and uprising. In the rich and recurrent imagery of the rose, the gyre and the tower the reader can trace Yeats's quest to unite intellect and artistry in a single compelling vision. Included in this edition are Yeats's notes complemented by explanatory notes from the esteemed Yeats scholar Richard J.Finneran.

Book A History of Verse Translation from the Irish 1789 1897

Download or read book A History of Verse Translation from the Irish 1789 1897 written by Robert Welch and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1988 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study surveys the course of verse translation from the Irish, starting with the notorious Macpherson controversy and ending with the publication of George Sigerson's Bards of the Gael and Gall in 1897. Professor Welch considers some of the problems and challenges relating to the translation of Irish verse into English in the context of translation theory and ideas about cultural differentiation. Throughout the book, we see again and again the dilemma of poets who must be faithful to the spirit or the form of Irish verse, but who rarely have the ability to capture both. The relationship between Irish and English in the nineteenth century was, necessarily, a critical one, and the translators were often working at the centre of the crisis, whether they were aware of it or not. As Celticism evolved into nationalism and heroic idealism, these influences can be clearly seen in the development of verse translation from the Irish.

Book excerpt: A sweeping survey of the arts of Ireland spanning 150 years and an astonishing range of artists and media This groundbreaking book captures a period in Ireland's history when countless foreign architects, artisans, and artists worked side by side with their native counterparts. Nearly all of the works within this remarkable volume--many of them never published before--have been drawn from North American collections. This catalogue accompanies the first exhibition to celebrate the Irish as artists, collectors, and patrons over 150 years of Ireland's sometimes turbulent history. Featuring the work of a wide range of artists--known and unknown--and a diverse array of media, the catalogue also includes an impressive assembly of essays by a pre-eminent group of international experts working on the art and cultural history of Ireland. Major essays discuss the subjects of the Irish landscape and tourism, Irish country houses, and Dublin's role as a center of culture and commerce. Also included are numerous shorter essays covering a full spectrum of topics and artworks, including bookbinding, ceramics, furniture, glass, mezzotints, miniatures, musical instruments, pastels, silver, and textiles.

Download or read book Out of What Began written by Gregory A. Schirmer and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book of its kind, Out of What Began traces the development of a distinctive tradition of Irish poetry over the course of three centuries. Beginning with Jonathan Swift in the early eighteenth century and concluding with such contemporary poets as Seamus Heaney and Eavan Boland, Gregory A. Schirmer looks at the work of nearly a hundred poets. Considering the evolving political and social environments in which they lived and wrote, Schirmer shows how Irish poetry and culture have come to be shaped by the struggle to define Irish identity. Schirmer includes a large number of accomplished poets who have been unjustly neglected in standard accounts of Irish literature; many of these writers are women, whose work has been kept in the shadows cast by that of well-known male poets. He also emphasizes the importance of political poetry in a country that continues to be torn by sectarian violence. With its rich selection of poetic voices, Out of What Began reveals the political, social, and religious diversity of Irish culture.
