Book excerpt: The story of a Victorian philanthropist who reformed shipping laws, saved thousands of sailors' lives and became a national hero 'A story of ambition, treachery, libel, political intrigue and cold-blooded murder on a mass scale' Herald 'Nicolette Jones charts Plimsoll's course with skill, insight and elegance' Sunday Telegraph 'Splendid and meticulously researched' Guardian In the second half of the nineteenth century, an astonishing campaign stirred a nation to save the lives of the hundreds of British sailors who were drowning unnecessarily every year. Overladen and ill-repaired ships set sail, their doomed crews sacrificed while mercenary shipowners profited from the insurance. Samuel Plimsoll blew the whistle on these scandalous practices, devoting his life to a campaign for maritime reform. Plimsoll caught the public imagination: under his banner working men and women stood side by side with enlightened aristocrats and industrialists, their clamour almost toppling a prime minister.

Book Breathing Life Into Sunday School

Download or read book Breathing Life Into Sunday School written by Ken Braddy and published by Lifeway Church Resources. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breathing Life into Sunday School speaks to the most important ministry that churches have, their Bible teaching ministry. Although Sunday school goes by many names today, it is still a time-honored and effective ministry for teaching the Bible, reaching people for Christ, assimilating them into the church, and growing them as disciples. The majority of churches inside and outside the SBC utilize Sunday school and need to know ways to grow it and improve its health. Although Sunday school is an important ministry, many churches have not experienced its full potential. Sunday school is in decline in most denominations, and there is a lack of health and vitality that it once had. In many churches, the leadership of the Sunday school is in the hands of untrained laymen (Sunday school directors), or is led by the pastor who has no paid staff members, and who might even be bi-vocational. This limits the pastor's time to address the needs of the church's Sunday school. This book details twelve ways that a church can experience new life and vibrancy in its Sunday school ministry. The twelve essentials are replicable by churches of any size. Based on the author's extensive history and training in Christian education and Sunday school, he helps the reader focus on key practices that are needed in order for a Sunday school to grow. The 128 page book is designed to help church leaders train Sunday school directors, teachers, and group members of a Sunday school class or Bible study group.

Drawing on historical records, recent findings and interviews with veterans and psychiatrists, Edgar Jones and Simon Wessely present a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of military psychiatry. Download or read book Battleship Bismarck written by William H. Garzke and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A complete operational history of the Bismarck . . . with period photos [and] underwater photography of the wreck, allowing a forensic analysis of the damage.” —Seapower This new book offers a forensic analysis of the design, operation, and loss of Germany’s greatest battleship, drawing on survivors’ accounts and the authors’ combined decades of experience in naval architecture and command at sea. Their investigation into every aspect of this battleship is informed by painstaking research, including extensive interviews and correspondence with the ship’s designers and the survivors of the battle of the Denmark Strait and Bismarck’s final battle. Albert Schnarke, the former gunnery officer of Tirpitz, Bismarck’s sister ship, aided the authors greatly by translating and supplying manuscript materials from those who participated in the design and operations. Survivors of Bismarck’s engagements contributed to this comprehensive study including D.B.H. Wildish, RN, damage control officer aboard HMS Prince of Wales, who located photographs of battle damage to his ship. After the wreck was discovered in 1989, the authors served as technical consultants to Dr. Robert Ballard, who led three trips to the site. Filmmaker and explorer James Cameron has also contributed a chapter, giving a comprehensive overview of his deep-sea explorations on Bismarck and sharing his team’s remarkable photos of the wreck. The result of nearly six decades of research and collaboration, this is an “encyclopedic and engrossing” account (Naval Historical Foundation) of the events surrounding one of the most epic naval battles of World War II. And Battleship Bismarck finally resolves some of the major questions around her career, not least the most profound one of all: Who sank the Bismarck, the British or the Germans?

Book Until The Sea Shall Free Them

Download or read book Until The Sea Shall Free Them written by Robert Frump and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1983, the freighter Marine Electric ran into a violent storm off the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Despite Force 10 conditions and fifty feet waves the crew were unconcerned: the ship had survived worse. But something was wrong, the ship was beginning to break up under them; gradually it began to go down by the head, then to capsize. Within two hours the crew were in the water in a desperate struggle for their lives. Their plight sparked one of the most dramatic air-sea rescues in maritime history. Only three of the 34 crew survived the night. The ship had sunk due to a serious structural defect. The chief mate Bob Cusick discovered that the owners had lost several other ships in similar circumstances to the Marine Electric, but the sinkings had been covered up. He decided to go after the company and they in turn rounded on him, the sole surviving officer. What follows is an epic and epochal court case that left none of the participants unscarred.
