Book excerpt: The first thing that Catholic religious orders did when they arrived in a town to establish a new community was to plant the cross--to erect a large wooden cross where the church was to stand. The cross was a contested symbol in the civil wars that reduced France to near anarchy in the sixteenth century. Protestants tore down crosses to mark their disdain for "popish" superstition; Catholics swore to erect a thousand new crosses for every one destroyed. Fighting words at the time, the vow to erect a thousand new crosses was expressed in the rapid multiplication of reformed religious congregations once peace arrived. In this book, Barbara B. Diefendorf examines the beginnings of the Catholic Reformation in France and shows how profoundly the movement was shaped by the experience of religious war. She analyzes convents and monasteries in three regions--Paris, Provence, and Languedoc--as they struggled to survive the wars and then to raise standards and instill a new piety in their members in their aftermath. What emerges are stories of nuns left homeless by the wars, of monks rebelling against both abbot and king, of ascetic friars reviving Catholic devotion in a Protestant-dominated South, and of a Dominican order battling demonic possession. The male tassel at the terminus of the plant most often sheds pollen before the visual appearance of the receptive silks of th the female ear at a lateral bud, normally at the 10 leaf [I]. Earlier studies examined the ontogeny of the growing tissues beginning with the embryo in the kernel through to the obvious protuberances of the growing point as the kernel germinates. The differentiated developing soon-to-become tassel and the lateral bulges that develop into the ears on the lateral buds become apparent very early in the germinating kernel [2, 3, 46]. A certain number of cells are destined for tassel and ear development [8]. As the plant develops, there is a phase transition [\3, 16] from the vegetative lateral buds to the reproductive lateral buds. This change in phase has been ascribed to genotypic control as evidenced in the differences among different genotypes in the initiation of the reproductive [I]. The genetic control of tassel and ear initiation has been gleaned from anatomical observations. Lejeune and Bernier [I2] found that maize plants terminate the initiation of additional axillary meristems at the time of tassel initiation. This would indicate that the top-most ear shoot is initiated on the same day as the initiation of tassel development and this event signals the end of the undifferentiated growing point.

A recent study reveals the design provenance, which details the inspiration, the purpose, the location choice, and the innovative science and technology employed for this one-of-a-kind architectural marvel. From conception to construction, it is a story of fascinating discoveries highlighting the designers’ new vision and the builders’ achievements and shortcomings. The castle represents the novel solution for securing Gothic vaults, albeit within an octagonal plant, which gives rise to the constellation of octagons in a fractal pattern. More significantly and concealed in the design is a new approach to defining the structures; it is based on deductive reasoning and mathematically defined dimensions, a glimpse of modern science. Surprisingly, the plant design is a geometric algorithm with a mathematical facet, much like an origami procedure. The builders laid the foundation from the designer’s plant layout with amazing precision, which is why we can decipher the medieval plant design. Inserting the plant dimensions in the plant design algorithm reveals the medieval unit of measurement at the castle, a slight variant of the Roman foot. The stonework also tells us that the construction was beset by the same complications often found in modern projects: plan changes, cost overruns, and planning shortcomings. An amazing finding is the construction blunder of short columns on the upper floor that was resolved by adding another pedestal camouflaged as bench seats extended around the room. Castel del Monte is more than a singular octagonal citadel; it is a testimonial of innovative design and construction concepts, a flash of enlightenment in the middle of the “Dark Ages.”
