The city's central location provided an ideal refueling stop for coast-to-coast airmail routes. And oil generated a class of savvy, starry-eyed entrepreneurs who both used aircraft and had money to invest. Wichita brought it all together. The people. The promise. The planes.On Sept. 2, 1911, Albin Longren became the first person to build and fly an airplane in Kansas. His pusher-type biplane lifted off from a hayfield with a four-gallon gas tank and "flight instruments" that consisted of a pocket watch and barometer. The first plane built in Wichita rolled out of production in 1917, when Clyde Cessna assembled his Comet. Wichita's first commercial aircraft, the Swallow, came from the E.M. Laird Airplane Co. in 1920. By 1928, Wichita was general aviation's manufacturing grand central, producing 120 airplanes a week - a quarter of all U.S. output. A Chamber of Commerce Air Capital logo contest celebrated the city's 16 aircraft manufacturers, six aircraft engine factories, 11 airports and dozen flying schools. Wichita produces more airplanes - almost 300,000 to date - and offers more skilled aviation workers than any other city. Aviation forms Wichita's heritage and future.

In 1948, the Ottaway Amusement Company purchased 40 acres of land in south Wichita so they could build the largest roller coaster in the state of Kansas. The Ottaway Amusement Co. sold Joyland in 1975 to Stanley Nelson. For 30 years, the Nelsons were the driving force behind the park and a large percent of its current rides, including the Whacky Shack, the Log Jam, and the Sky Coaster.

Book excerpt: This thesis covers the life and career of Julius Earl Schaefer. He was an aviation pioneer in Wichita, Kansas, whose legacy has been lost in the history of Wichita aviation. This thesis attempts to reveal his importance in shaping the aviation community of Wichita. Schaefer managed the largest plant in town, and he had the drive to help his community grow. He was on many different boards and committees within the city. One of the more influential was the Chamber of Commerce. Schaefer helped direct the goals of the Chamber as they tried to direct the goals of the city. The main focus of the thesis is on the production of the B-29s. Wichita is remembered for these planes, but without Schaefer they would not have been built here. Many resources were used to piece together Schaefer's life. The Boeing-Stearman collection in the Department of Special Collections at Wichita State University provided much of the material on the company life. Other company documents, such as the Boeing Contact and Boeing Plane Talk help show what life at the plant was like. Finally, a major aid to this project was the documents provided by Schaefer's remaining family. These documents helped to fill in the early years of his life and round out the story.
