Book excerpt: The bizarre, true story of a robbery gone wrong and the explosive murder that shocked the nation—as seen on Netflix’s docuseries Evil Genius. For the first time, two of the people who followed the story from the beginning—Jerry Clark, the lead FBI Special Agent who cracked what became known as the Pizza Bomber case, and investigative reporter Ed Palattella—tell the complete story of what happened on August 28, 2003. In the suburbs of Erie, Pennsylvania, a pizza delivery man named Brian Wells was accosted by several men who locked a time bomb around his neck. They then ordered him to rob a bank. After delivering the money, he would receive clues to help him disarm the bomb. It was one of the most ingenious bank robbery schemes in history, known as Collarbomb by the FBI. It did not go according to plan. Wells, picked up by police shortly after the robbery, never found the clues he needed. Investigating the crime after his grisly death, the FBI soon discovered that Wells was not, in fact, an innocent victim. He was merely the first co-conspirator to fall in a bizarre trail of death following the crime... INCLUDES PHOTOS

Book The Deserter s Tale

Download or read book The Deserter s Tale written by Joshua Key and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-01-22 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Apocalypse Now insanity . . . if this is what one soldier saw in seven months, imagine the sum total of the inhumanity being perpetuated in Iraq” (Toronto Star). The first memoir from a soldier who deserted from the war in Iraq, and a vivid and damning indictment of the American military campaign, The Deserter’s Tale is “destined to become part of the literature of the Iraq war . . . a substantial contribution to history” (Los Angeles Times). In Spring 2003, young Oklahoman Joshua Key was sent to Ramadi as part of a combat engineer company. It was not the campaign against terrorists and evildoers he had expected. Key saw Iraqi civilians beaten, shot, and killed, or maimed for little or no provocation. After seven months in Iraq, Key was home on leave and knew he could not return. So he took his family and went underground in the United States, finally seeking asylum in Canada after fourteen months in hiding. Detailing the grinding horrors of life as part of an occupying force, The Deserter’s Tale is the story of a conservative-minded family man and patriot who went to war believing unquestioningly in his government’s commitment to integrity and justice, and how what he saw in Iraq transformed him into someone who could no longer serve his country. “Devastating . . . The questions [Key] raises . . . will not go away.” —Daily Kos “A tearjerker . . . Lawrence Hill, the award-winning Canadian novelist and journalist who helped Key write The Deserter’s Tale, does a marvelous job preserving Key’s authentic voice. The writing is fluid, crisp and compelling. The story is shocking.” —Montreal Gazette

Book 40 Tall Tabloid Tales and 4 Super Short Stories

Download or read book 40 Tall Tabloid Tales and 4 Super Short Stories written by Scott Ware and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-09 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you like reading those hilarious tabloid "news" stories about Aliens, Bigfoot, dumb crooks, super-powered household pets, and "incredible but true" current event stories from tabloids? Do you also hate all the raunchy pictures, perverted stories, Hollywood gossip, and ads for implants, piercing and psychics? Me too. Instead of paying $3 to wade through all that garbage (that your kids will read also) to get 2 or 3 amusing stories an issue, why not get 40 funny, bite-size tales that can be consumed in a few minutes each? These are laughs you can share with family, friends, and co-workers. Pastor Pete, Sister Sally, and even your in-laws won't be embarrassed. The 4 short stories require 10-30 minutes per read. "A Real Life Superhero" is the inspirational account of a kind-hearted loser who always dreamed of being a superhero. Would people ever appreciate his life of good deeds? "Not Just a Cat" may be just a tad out there. The protagonist suffers a debilitating on-the-job back injury, which results in lying around the house, and taking pain pills complements of Workman's Compensation. After a few months, he thinks his cat is talking to him. All's well that ends well in this tale of temporary delusional hijacks. "Missy's Bear" is a refreshing (compared to my other stories) bedtime story I made up for my own daughters when they were young. A precocious little girl befriends a talking bear. There you have it folks. 44 original stories to keep you chuckling through the day.

Book Driver In

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Enslee
  • Publisher : Lulu.com
  • Release : 2006-09-29
  • ISBN : 1430309067
  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book Driver In written by David Enslee and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006-09-29 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the long-anticipated release of "Driver In!", David C. Enslee takes us deep into the hidden world of the pizza delivery industry. These are the narratives that the corporate pizza chains are afraid to tell. Each of these short stories was written while Dave was going through his "Marinara Period," and at last they have been assembled into one collection. The humanity of the pizza delivery business has finally been breathtakingly illustrated in 11 stories centered around a SnakeEyes Pizza franchise in northern New Jersey. Transcending the everyday work of tossing, baking and delivering, Enslee gets to the true heart of the industry: the people who drive the machine (or at least the cars). Too often, we take for granted that the smile on the deliveryman's face is genuine or that whenever we pick up the phone, someone will be there on the other end to take our order. Be warned, once you've read this book, you'll see the person ringing your doorbell in a completely different light.

  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi

  • ISBN : 1628467789
  • Pages : 497 pages

Download or read book Campus Traditions written by Simon J. Bronner and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their beginnings, campuses emerged as hotbeds of traditions and folklore. American college students inhabit a culture with its own slang, stories, humor, beliefs, rituals, and pranks. Simon J. Bronner takes a long, engaging look at American campus life and how it is shaped by students and at the same time shapes the values of all who pass through it. The archetypes of absent-minded profs, fumbling jocks, and curve-setting dweebs are the stuff of legend and humor, along with the all-nighters, tailgating parties, and initiations that mark campus tradition—and student identities. Undergraduates in their hallowed halls embrace distinctive traditions because the experience of higher education precariously spans childhood and adulthood, parental and societal authority, home and corporation, play and work. Bronner traces historical changes in these traditions. The predominant context has shifted from what he calls the “old-time college,” small in size and strong in its sense of community, to mass society’s “mega-university,” a behemoth that extends beyond any campus to multiple branches and offshoots throughout a state, region, and sometimes the globe. One might assume that the mega-university has dissolved collegiate traditions and displaced the old-time college, but Bronner finds the opposite. Student needs for social belonging in large universities and a fear of losing personal control have given rise to distinctive forms of lore and a striving for retaining the pastoral “campus feel” of the old-time college. The folkloric material students spout, and sprout, in response to these needs is varied but it is tied together by its invocation of tradition and social purpose. Beneath the veil of play, students work through tough issues of their age and environment. They use their lore to suggest ramifications, if not resolution, of these issues for themselves and for their institutions. In the process, campus traditions are keys to the development of American culture.
