Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Robert E. Howard was originally published in 1929 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The Pit of the Serpent' is a story in the Sailor Steve Costigan series about a travelling boxer. Robert Ervin Howard was born in Peaster, Texas in 1906. During his youth, his family moved between a variety of Texan boomtowns, and Howard - a bookish and somewhat introverted child - was steeped in the violent myths and legends of the Old South. At fifteen Howard began to read the pulp magazines of the day, and to write more seriously. The December 1922 issue of his high school newspaper featured two of his stories, 'Golden Hope Christmas' and 'West is West'. In 1924 he sold his first piece - a short caveman tale titled 'Spear and Fang' - for $16 to the not-yet-famous Weird Tales magazine. Howard's most famous character, Conan the Cimmerian, was a barbarian-turned-King during the Hyborian Age, a mythical period of some 12,000 years ago. Conan featured in seventeen Weird Tales stories between 1933 and 1936 which is why Howard is now regarded as having spawned the 'sword and sorcery' genre. The Conan stories have since been adapted many times, most famously in the series of films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

A charismatic but controversial philosophy professor has been falsely charged and convicted of the ritualistic murders. Professor Chance Carpenter ends up on death row because of a rush to judgment orchestrated by the diminutive FBI agent Laura Lamb. Her ambitions and nefarious secrets cause her to cross the thin blue line and also become a serial killer. She is now on the lam; her crimes are featured in the tabloids and a new dance craze is named after her. College kids are doing the "Laura Lamb". The true killer of the UCLA coeds, however, has blended in with average "Joe College". The thriller follows a trail of evil, surprise, and suspense.

Book excerpt: A quick-playing, rules-light skirmish wargame of Horror hunting set in a bleak sci-fi world on the brink of impending doom. Hunger, Hatred, Domination, Oblivion, and Ruin. The world is dying, poised on the brink of falling to one of these great dooms. Factions pursue their own interests, as likely to be the heralds of the world's destruction as they are its saviours. Horrors – monstrous abominations that defy logic, science, and nature – roam the land. Bands of hunters follow bold leaders, seeking out and destroying Horrors, gaining fame as word of their deeds spreads amongst the desperate survivors. Rival bands compete for prestige, clash over ideology, and pose as much of a threat to each other as the Horrors they hunt. The Doomed is a quick-playing, rules-light skirmish wargame in which small warbands of hunters compete to hunt unique Horrors in a bleak sci-fi world. Scenarios are defined by the Horror being hunted and by the Conflict in which the hunt takes place. Each Horror has its own strengths, weaknesses, and tactics, often breaking the rules in unique ways, and must be approached carefully – stealth, cunning, and brute force will all have a role to play. Each Conflict, meanwhile, provides a distinct set-up for the scenario and a secondary objective that pits the warbands against each other as well as against the Horror. Campaigns build towards a climax, with hunters gaining prestige and renown, offering access to new, unique options for their warband. In the background, the five dooms also grow in power, threatening to deliver their own climax to the campaign if the hunters are not successful enough.

Book The Seven Revivals of the Apocalypse

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exiled to Patmos, John the apostle receives a vision of the risen Christ along with epistles to be sent to the churches of Asia Minor. Unable to go himself, John enlists the aid of one of his guards as his messenger. Prochorus, a new convert, carries the letters to the seven churches. At each location he encounters the problems those first-century churches faced, as outlined in the letters. Interaction with the people in those cities brings to life the commendations and condemnations announced by God. At the same time his former commander, Ulpius, pursues him in an attempt to prevent what he considers disloyalty to his god, Emperor Domitian. Other trouble arises from those who worship the Greek gods. In spite of threats, arrests, opposition, and disappointment, Prochorus completes his mission. In every location he finds those who listen with open ears, respond to the divine message, repent of their sins revealed by a God who knows them, and experience revival.

Book A Hundred and One Nights

Download or read book A Hundred and One Nights written by and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A luminous translation of Arabic tales of enchantment and wonder Translated into English for the very first time, A Hundred and One Nights is a marvelous example of the rich tradition of popular Arabic storytelling. Like the celebrated Thousand and One Nights, this collection opens with the frame story of Scheherazade, the vizier’s gifted daughter who recounts imaginative tales night after night in an effort to distract the murderous king from taking her life. A Hundred and One Nights features an almost entirely different set of stories, however, each one more thrilling, amusing, and disturbing than the last. Here, we encounter tales of epic warriors, buried treasure, disappearing brides, cannibal demon-women, fatal shipwrecks, and clever ruses, where human strength and ingenuity play out against a backdrop of inexorable, inscrutable fate. Distinctly rooted in Arabic literary culture and the Islamic tradition, these tales draw on motifs and story elements that circulated across cultures, including Indian and Chinese antecedents, and features a frame story possibly older than its more famous sibling. This vibrant translation of A Hundred and One Nights promises to transport readers, new and veteran alike, into its fantastical realms of magic and wonder. An English-only edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malleus Maleficarum is probably one of the most notorious books of Catholic Church history. Originally put out when the Inquisition was in full force, this book and the text it contains condemned thousands of innocent people to needless deaths. Most of what today's society and culture thinks of the witches and the occult comes from these pages. Although this text is largely misguided and inaccurate from even a scriptural standpoint, the fact remains that it has molded our views on those who practice occult arts in many ways. Take a look into the past!
