Book excerpt: A twisted take on Narnia, this warmhearted, dryly comic novel from the award-winning author of the Peculiar Crimes Unit series starring Bryant & May transports readers to the last poignant moment of freedom before growing up. Kay Goodwin is a sixteen-year-old boy with a smart mouth and too much imagination, trapped in the most dismal place in England at the worst possible time: the early seventies. Marooned in the rundown seaside resort of Cole Bay, with its crumbling pier and grumbling pensioners, Kay experiences each day as a horrible comedy of errors—until he discovers a faraway land with characters who are impossibly exotic yet strangely familiar. In the kingdom of Calabash, he can have everything he’s ever wanted from life. There’s only one small problem: Calabash doesn’t technically exist. In a country that’s still hungover from the sixties, Kay finds it all too easy to retreat from reality. But he’s prepared to risk everything to find out what makes him different, what his life really holds, and what happens to those who believe in the impossible. Book Making Light

    Book Details:
  • Author : Raymond Knapp
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2018-02-02
  • ISBN : 0822372401
  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book Making Light written by Raymond Knapp and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Making Light Raymond Knapp traces the musical legacy of German Idealism as it led to the declining prestige of composers such as Haydn while influencing the development of American popular music in the nineteenth century. Knapp identifies in Haydn and in early popular American musical cultures such as minstrelsy and operetta a strain of high camp—a mode of engagement that relishes both the superficial and serious aspects of an aesthetic experience—that runs antithetical to German Idealism's musical paradigms. By considering the disservice done to Haydn by German Idealism alongside the emergence of musical camp in American popular music, Knapp outlines a common ground: a humanistically based aesthetic of shared pleasure that points to ways in which camp receptive modes might rejuvenate the original appeal of Haydn's music that has mostly eluded audiences. In so doing, Knapp remaps the historiographical modes and systems of critical evaluation that dominate musicology while troubling the divide between serious and popular music.

Book The Hound of the Baskervilles

Download or read book The Hound of the Baskervilles written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2006-01-10 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901–02) is Arthur Conan Doyle’s most celebrated Sherlock Holmes adventure. At the end of the yew tree path of his ancestral home, Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead. Close by are the footprints of a gigantic hound. Called to investigate, Holmes seems to face a supernatural foe. In the tense narration of the detective’s efforts to solve the crime, Conan Doyle meditates on late Victorian and early twentieth-century ideas of ancestry and atavism, the possible biological determination of criminals, the stability of the British landed classes, and the place of the supernatural. Historical documents included with this fully-annotated Broadview edition help contextualize the novel’s debates and reveal its cultural and literary significance as a supreme instance of early detective fiction. Also included is the Conan Doyle short story “The Adventure of the Speckled Band.”
