Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We hear the terms steer clear of, hit the deck, don't rock the boat , and to harbor a grudge and give little thought to their origin. Left together on ships for months, and often for years, pirate crews developed expressions that made their way into common usage. Terms for things related to life at sea became idioms used by land lubbers, a term derived from the holes in the platforms surrounding the mast that allowed sailors to avoid climbing the rigging around the platforms. A lubber was someone who was very clumsy, so a land lubber is someone who knows nothing about sailing and rigging.Centuries ago, men wore wigs of length denoting their wealth and importance. Soon, many naval captains, including Sir Henry Morgan and Captain Chaloner Ogle, who killed Black Bart Roberts, began to adopt the style. A law was passed in England declaring that only nobility, judges, and bishops could wear full-length wigs and so was born the term bigwig .Reading through these words and phrases is an abbreviated trip through history, with lists of major naval mutinies, a summary of the slave trade, and even jokes. This dictionary is written to be entertaining as well as informative, to give a flavor of the interesting times from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries when pirates controlled many sealanes. It also contains a treasure trove of factual information about life aboard the ship, important pirate haunts, and technical terms.

Book The Pirate Who Does Not Know the Value of Pi

Download or read book The Pirate Who Does Not Know the Value of Pi written by Eugene Ostashevsky and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original collection from one of the most active poets in contemporary literature. Winner of the 2019 International Poetry Prize from the City of Münster The Pirate Who Does Not Know the Value of Pi is a poem-novel about the relationship between a pirate and a parrot who, after capturing a certain quantity of prizes, are shipwrecked on a deserted island, where they proceed to discuss whether they would have been able to communicate with people indigenous to the island, had there been any. Characterized by multilingual punning, humor puerile and set-theoretical, philosophical irony and narrative handicaps, Eugene Ostashevsky’s new large-scale project draws on sources as various as early modern texts about pirates and animal intelligence, old-school hip-hop, and game theory to pursue the themes of emigration, incomprehension, untranslatability, and the otherness of others.

When Merrylin, the mermaid, fails to break the bottle of sparkling water at the christening, a curse in the form of black clouds threaten, and a storm descends. When Captain Skip Jack finally broke the bottle, sharing half of its contents with the Neptune, the curse was lifted. But during the darkness, Mudcat the Pirate kidnapped the festival princess, Miss Lulu Belle, and sailed away. Ra-me is forced to go with the Captain to help find and rescue Lulu Belle. The pirate ship has sailed to the far coastline where many overhangs shelter hidden coves and caves. But the newly-christened ship, Good Ship Lightning Bolt, sails quickly in pursuit. Book British Pirates and Society 1680 1730

Download or read book British Pirates and Society 1680 1730 written by Margarette Lincoln and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how pirates were portrayed in their own time, in trial reports, popular prints, novels, legal documents, sermons, ballads and newspaper accounts. It examines how attitudes towards them changed with Britain’s growing imperial power, exploring the interface between political ambition and personal greed, between civil liberties and the power of the state. It throws light on contemporary ideals of leadership and masculinity - some pirate voyages qualifying as feats of seamanship and endurance. Unusually, it also gives insights into the domestic life of pirates and investigates the experiences of women whose husbands turned pirate or were captured for piracy. Pirate voyages contributed to British understanding of trans-oceanic navigation, patterns of trade and different peoples in remote parts of the world. This knowledge advanced imperial expansion and British control of trade routes, which helps to explain why contemporary attitudes towards piracy were often ambivalent. This is an engaging study of vested interests and conflicting ideologies. It offers comparisons with our experience of piracy today and shows how the historic representation of pirate behaviour can illuminate other modern preoccupations, including gang culture.
