Book Journeys into the Wild

Download or read book Journeys into the Wild written by and published by National Library of Australia. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Journeys into the Wild" is a poetic escape to a fragile and breathtaking wilderness, with celebrated photographer Peter Dombrovskis as our guide. In 2003, Dombrovskis was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame, the first Australian and one of only 77 people to be accorded this honour worldwide. Bob Brown and Peter Dombrovskis forged their friendship in the battle to save the Gordon and Franklin rivers. During the campaign, Peter would take one of the most famous photographs in Australian history, "Morning Mist, Rock Island Bend, Franklin River". In this book, Brown introduces Dombrovskis' work and provides commentary on some of his favourite images, reproduced here in full colour with stunning clarity. From sweeping vistas of Tasmania to close-ups of a leaf's skeleton or a spider's web, these photographs are at once a paean to the wild and a plea to conserve it for future generations.

Book My Adopted Country Australia

Download or read book My Adopted Country Australia written by Erwin Feeken and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with a chapter on homeland memories, followed by the authors and his wifes first experiences in Australia in 1954. For the first decade they moved from place to place, finally settling down in Canberra. These adventures are expressed in chapters on Tasmania, Darwin, a 15month stay in Canberra, Grafton, and finally Canberra again. The family, now with five daughters, settled in the National Capital where Mr Feeken became permanently employed as a draftsman and cartographer with the Bureau of Mineral Resources (now Geoscience Australia). Being interested in Australian Exploration, the family travelled year after year, checking out explorers discoveries, culminating in the publication of The Discovery and Exploration of Australia in 1970. Afterwards, the family still travelled, year after year, the vast expanses of the Australian Continent, often checking out explorers routes. After the untimely death of Mrs Feeken in 2005, the author was encouraged by friends to write up this story. The fascination for travelling the outback continued into the next generation. In 2007, Mr Feeken travelled with his granddaughter Kiah around Australia and to the centre, covering nearly 30 000 km in 6 months.

Book The Entolomataceae of Tasmania

    Book Details:
  • Author : machiel noordeloos
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-08-27
  • ISBN : 9400746792
  • Pages : 409 pages

Download or read book The Entolomataceae of Tasmania written by machiel noordeloos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of 14 years of collecting Entolomataceae in the native forests of Tasmania, Australia. Although initially involving only the Tasmanian residents Genevieve Gates and David Ratkowsky, who made twice- or thrice-weekly forays into the forests throughout the year, the project was subsequently joined by agaric specialist Machiel Noordeloos from the Netherlands, and by fungi photographer Michael Pilkington from the United Kingdom. The international character of the project is further evidenced by the earlier contributions of American mycologist Tim Baroni to the Tasmanian Rhodocybe species which form the basis of the chapter on the now-expanded concept of Clitopilus, and a visit of several months in 2010 by Brazilian Ph.D. candidate Fernanda Karstedt, who tested the keys to the Entoloma species. Consequently, several thousand well-annotated collections were found during this inventory and form the basis of this monographic treatment of the Entoloma and Clitopilus of Tasmania. The resulting 90 Entoloma species and 10 Clitopilus species are well documented with standardized descriptions, line drawings of fruit bodies and diagnostic microscopic characters, and, when available, with colour photographs. Thanks to the intensive search, it was possible to illustrate most species in colour. Dichotomous keys facilitate identification of the species. The species concept used is morphologically based; in several cases, however, identification to species level is supported by molecular data.
