Book excerpt: 'The Pioneers; a Tale of the Western Wilderness' is an American settlers-era novel, where we are introduced to a man central to the book named Reuben Guff. He was a man who had seen a great deal of life in his day, although at the time he was introduced to public notice he had not lived more than six-and-thirty summers. He was a bronzed, stalwart Canadian. His father had been Scotch, his mother of French extraction; and Reuben possessed the dogged resolution of the Scot with the vivacity of the Frenchman. In regard to his tastes and occupation we shall let him speak for himself.

Book excerpt: "As part of the Treaty of Paris, in which Great Britain recognized the new United States of America, Britain ceded the land that comprised the immense Northwest Territory, a wilderness empire northwest of the Ohio River containing the future states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. A Massachusetts minister named Manasseh Cutler was instrumental in opening this vast territory to veterans of the Revolutionary War and their families for settlement. Included in the Northwest Ordinance were three remarkable conditions: freedom of religion, free universal education, and most importantly, the prohibition of slavery. In 1788 the first band of pioneers set out from New England for the Northwest Territory under the leadership of Revolutionary War veteran General Rufus Putnam. They settled in what is now Marietta on the banks of the Ohio River. McCullough tells the story through five major characters: Cutler and Putnam; Cutler's son Ephraim; and two other men, one a carpenter turned architect, and the other a physician who became a prominent figure in American science. They and their families created a town in a primeval wilderness, while coping with such frontier realities as trees of a size never imagined, floods, fires, wolves, bears, even an earthquake, all the while negotiating a contentious and sometimes hostile relationship with the native people. Like so many of McCullough's subjects, they let no obstacle deter or defeat them. Drawn in great part from a rare and all-but-unknown collection of diaries and letters by the key figures, The Pioneers is a uniquely American story of people whose ambition and courage led them to remarkable accomplishments."--Dust jacket.

Book Mornings on Horseback

Download or read book Mornings on Horseback written by David McCullough and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-05-31 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Book Award–winning biography that tells the story of how young Teddy Roosevelt transformed himself from a sickly boy into the vigorous man who would become a war hero and ultimately president of the United States, told by master historian David McCullough. Mornings on Horseback is the brilliant biography of the young Theodore Roosevelt. Hailed as “a masterpiece” (John A. Gable, Newsday), it is the winner of the Los Angeles Times 1981 Book Prize for Biography and the National Book Award for Biography. Written by David McCullough, the author of Truman, this is the story of a remarkable little boy, seriously handicapped by recurrent and almost fatal asthma attacks, and his struggle to manhood: an amazing metamorphosis seen in the context of the very uncommon household in which he was raised. The father is the first Theodore Roosevelt, a figure of unbounded energy, enormously attractive and selfless, a god in the eyes of his small, frail namesake. The mother, Mittie Bulloch Roosevelt, is a Southerner and a celebrated beauty, but also considerably more, which the book makes clear as never before. There are sisters Anna and Corinne, brother Elliott (who becomes the father of Eleanor Roosevelt), and the lovely, tragic Alice Lee, TR’s first love. All are brought to life to make “a beautifully told story, filled with fresh detail” (The New York Times Book Review). A book to be read on many levels, it is at once an enthralling story, a brilliant social history and a work of important scholarship which does away with several old myths and breaks entirely new ground. It is a book about life intensely lived, about family love and loyalty, about grief and courage, about “blessed” mornings on horseback beneath the wide blue skies of the Badlands.

Download or read book Wild Western Scenes written by J. B. Jones and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild Western Scenes is a vivid and exciting retelling of adventures set in the Old West of the 19th century, with the pioneer adventurer Daniel Boone a prominent character. This edition includes the sixteen original illustrations. Many of the stories in this narrative by J. B. Jones are adapted from the real pioneering and frontier escapades of the famous Daniel Boone. We are presented with a series of encounters - some exciting, some amusing, some dangerous - that Boone and his company had whilst ranging in the wildernesses of North America. The intrepid explorers find themselves up against the natural world as they hunt and forage to survive. Suspicious Native Americans, dishonest fellow pioneers, dangerous wild animals, and an untamed and uncharted landscape all pose dangers to the group. Jones, writing in the 19th century, endeavors to produce accurate dialogue - while archaic to the modern ear, such words help readers understand how people communicated long ago. We witness a time which was in many ways savage, with violence often the first recourse. Yet it was also a time of adventure and utter freedom: a vast landscape stretched before explorers such as Daniel Boone, and he duly became an embodiment of the bold American spirit. Though partly fictionalized, these tales each contain more than a grain of truth; this serves to increase their appeal. Though this book attained great fame from the mid-19th to the early 20th century, the author at first had trouble getting it published. The manuscript was declined by a British publisher, and so Jones became an early example of a self-publisher. The book was wildly and went through many editions: this reprint is based on a revised, illustrated text of 1859.
