Book excerpt: With lips slightly parted and eyes fixed on a point in the distance, a breathtaking marble portrait of Costanza Piccolomini appears alive. Carved by Gianlorenzo Bernini in 1636-37 for his own pleasure, the portrait of Costanza is one of his most captivating works, but until now little has been known about its subject. For centuries Costanza was identified only as Bernini's mistress, who later incited his rage by betraying him for his brother. Author Sarah McPhee corrects and expands this story in her remarkable biography of a sculpture and its subject. Bernini's Beloved sets the bust and Costanza's own life--her childhood and noble name, her marriage, affair, fall from grace, and recovery--against the backdrop of Baroque Rome. Beautifully illustrated and written, this fascinating story expands our understanding of the woman whose intelligence and passion served as inspiration for Bernini's celebrated sculpture, and who courageously forged a life for herself in the decades following its creation.

Book Die Stiftung von Autorschaft in der neulateinischen Literatur ca 1350 ca 1650

Download or read book Die Stiftung von Autorschaft in der neulateinischen Literatur ca 1350 ca 1650 written by Karl A. E. Enenkel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book throws new light on the question of authorship in the Latin literature of the later medieval and in the early modern periods. It shows that authorship was not something to be automatically assumed in an empathic sense, but was chiefly to be found in the paratextual features of works and was imparted by them. This study examines the strategies and tools used by authors ca. 1350-1650, to assert their authorial aspirations. Enenkel demonstrates how they incorporated themselves into secular, ecclesiastical, spiritual and intellectual power structures. He shows that in doing so rituals linked to the ceremonial of ruling, played a fundamental role, for example, the ritual presentation of a book or the crowning of a poet. Furthermore Enenkel establishes a series of qualifications for entry to the Respublica litteraria, with which the authors of books announced their claims to authorship.

Book Sienese Renaissance Tomb Monuments

Download or read book Sienese Renaissance Tomb Monuments written by Robert Munman and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 1993 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first scholarly study to treat the sepulchral memorials of Quattrocento Siena in a comprehensive way. These works include contributions by such noted sculptors as Jacopo della Quercia, Il Vecchietta, Neroccio de'Landi, Giovanni di Stefano, & Urbano da Cortona, as well as a number of monuments by assorted anonymous followers of Donatello. Some of these works, most notably Quercia's tomb for Ilaria del Carretto, occupy well-recognized places in the history of Italian sculpture. But various others, many of significant artistic importance as well as sociological interest, are presented here for the first time. In addition to a thorough catalogue of all traceable figured memorials from Renaissance Siena & its artistic dependecies, Prof. Robert Munman takes up such problems as the formal devt. of several sepulchral types produced there, the cultural & historical context of such tombs in general, & the attitudes of patronage that, given Siena's rich artistic resources, produced fewer of these monuments than one would have expected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More widely studied and more frequently performed than ever before, John Webster's The Duchess of Malfi is here presented in an accessible and thoroughly up-to-date edition. Based on the Revels Plays text, the notes have been augmented to cast further light both on Webster's amazing dialogue and on the stage action. An entirely new introduction sets the tragedy in the context of pre-Civil War England and gives a revealing view of its imagery and dramatic action. From its well-documented early performances to the two productions seen in the West End of London in the 1995-96 season, a stage history gives an account of the play in performance. Students, actors, directors and theatre-goers will all find here a reappraisal of Webster's artistry in the greatest age of English theatre, which highlights why it has lived on stage with renewed force in the last decades of the twentieth century.

Book Reclaiming Rome Cardinals in the Fifteenth Century

Download or read book Reclaiming Rome Cardinals in the Fifteenth Century written by Carol Mary Richardson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteenth century was a critical juncture for the College of Cardinals. They were accused of prolonging the exile in Avignon and causing the schism. At the councils at the beginning of the period their very existence was questioned. They rebuilt their relationship with the popes by playing a fundamental part in reclaiming Rome when the papacy returned to its city in 1420. Because their careers were usually much longer than that of an individual pope, the cardinals combined to form a much more effective force for restoring Rome. In this book, shifting focus from the popes to the cardinals sheds new light on a relatively unknown period for Renaissance art history and the history of Rome. Dr. Carol M. Richardson has been awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2008) in the field of History of Arts.

Book Renaissance Siena

    Book Details:
  • Author : A. Lawrence Jenkens
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2005-07-25
  • ISBN : 0271090871
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Renaissance Siena written by A. Lawrence Jenkens and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2005-07-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art of Renaissance Siena is usually viewed in the light of developments and accomplishments achieved elsewhere, but Sienese artists were part of a dynamic dialogue that was shaped by their city’s internal political turmoil, diplomatic relationships with its neighbors, internal social hierarchies, and struggle for self-definition. These essays lead scholars in a new and exciting direction in the study of the art of Renaissance Siena, exploring the cultural dynamics of the city and its art in a specifically Sienese context. This volume shapes a new understanding of Sienese culture in the early modern period and defines the questions scholars will continue to ask for years to come. What emerges is a picture of Renaissance Siena as a city focused on meeting the challenges of the time while formulating changes to shape its future. Central to these changes are the city’s efforts to fashion a civic identity through the visual arts.
