Book Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Vladimir Ivanovich Palladin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-26 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Physiology The German edition of this book has gained many friends in institutions where plant physiology is taught and has supplied a need for elementary students not otherwise met. Its small size, together with its generally excellent arrange ment and manner of presentation render it very well suited to the use of begin ning students who really desire to obtain a general grasp of the subject in a comparatively short time. Its brevity, its conciseness and the readableness of its story are its first attractions, but a further examination reveals the facts that Palladin has been exceptionally thorough in much of his treatment, and that a wealth of well-chosen citations from the literature of plant physiology places in the reader's hands a ready guide to original sources. In the latter regard the text-books originating in our own language are usually deficient, thereby depriv ing the student of one of his most important rights at the very start - the right to appreciate that the key to the science he is entering really lies' in its literature, contributed to by many hundreds of serious workers writing in many languages. Book Experimental Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Experimental Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by D. T. Macdougal and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Plant Physiology The appreciation shown toward the translation of Oels' Pflanzenphysiologische Versuche prepared by the present writer, together with the comments and suggestions from laboratories in which it has been used, has led to the preparation of this manual, which it is hoped will conform somewhat more nearly to the needs of American students. The general form of Oels' manual has been retained, and many cuts from the translation and a few paragraphs of the text have been repeated here without indication of their origin. Only the more important and better established portions of the subject are treated, and these in the manner already in general use. With the rapid advance of investigation it is next to impossible that an elementary' laboratory manual should include the latest results, especially when the essential points of many of them may yet be in controversy and need the critical treatment which is certainly not within the province of a work of this character. In the hands of an instructor in touch with current botanical thought, such deficiencies are easily supplied. In the interests of precision, the term "assimilation" is here used exclusively to denote a general function of protoplasm, while the term "photosynthesis," which was introduced into the translation of Oels' manual (Preface and page 30), is adopted to signify the special process of forming carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight. The author is indebted to Mr. R. N. Day and Miss J. E. Tilden for the demonstration and drawing for Figure 32. Book Principles of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Oran Raber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Plant Physiology During the past five years since the first edition of this book appeared, it has met with more favor in the eyes of teachers and students of the subject than the author (or the publishers) had anticipated even in the most sanguine moments. But during those five years much phytophysiological water has passed under the botanical bridge. Once again has come the task of deciding what matter shall be included and what shall not. There is also the question of maintaining the book within a reasonable size. N o self-respecting student can be expected to carry an elementary book of more than 500 pages. Most gospels are small; but revisions have a tendency to get bigger and (let us hope) better. An elementary text should be up to date and yet not con tain many disputable data. However, if one included in a text book only those facts to which every plant physiologist subscribed wholeheartedly all of the time, the author would finish with a mere pamphlet. A happy medium must be sought. Whether the teacher professor who reads this will think this golden mean has here been attained, will depend upon his personal predilections and the number of fields in which he is not a specialist. So in this, as in the previous edition, there has been an attempt to hold as much as possible to the essentials of a general, elementary course, bearing in mind that this elementary course may be pre paring the student for courses in horticulture, agronomy, or forestry; for more advanced courses in plant physiology; or for a more appreciative life in the nonprofessional world. Book Photosynthesis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Photosynthesis Classic Reprint written by Herman Augustus Spoehr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photosynthesis It was with a clear recognition of the usefulness of reviews of this character that a Committee of the American Chemical Society recommended the publication of the two series of mono graphs under the auspices of the Society. Two rather distinct purposes are to be served by these mono graphs. The first purpose, whose fulfilment will probably render to chemists in general the most important service, is to present the knowledge available upon the chosen topic in a readable form, intelligible to those Whose activities may be along a wholly different line. Many chemists fail to realize how closely their investigations may be connected with other work which on the surface appears far afield from their own. These monographs will enable such men to form closer contact with the work of chemists in other lines of research. The second purpose is to promote research in the branch of science covered by the mono graph, by furnishing a well digested survey of the progress already made in that field and by pointing out directions in which investigation needs to be extended. To facilitate the attainment of this purpose, it is intended to include extended references to the literature, which will enable anyone interested to follow up the subject in more detail. If the literature is so voluminous that a complete bibliography is impracticable, a critical selection will be made of those papers which are most important. The publication of these books marks a distinct departure in the policy of the American Chemical Society inasmuch as it is a serious attempt to found an American chemical literature with out primary regard to commercial considerations. The success of the venture will depend in large part upon the measure of cooperation which can be secured in the preparation of books dealing adequately with topics of general interest; it is earnestly hoped, therefore, that every member of the various organizations in the chemical and allied industries will recognize the impor tance of the enterprise and take sufficient interest to justify it. Book Studies in Plant Respiration and Photosynthesis Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Plant Respiration and Photosynthesis The experiments on photosynthesis which were begun at the Desert Laboratory in Tucson, Arizona, about eight years ago yielded, among other things, the conclusion that prerequisite to an understanding of the nature of the energy transfer in photosynthesis was a more extensive knowledge of the metabolism of chlorophyllous organs. It became clear that, before attempting to follow the course of the synthesis Of carbohydrate material in illuminated leaves, it was essential to know more about the conditions governing the equilibria and mutual transformations Of the various groups of carbohydrates, quite independent of the photosynthetic process. Book Physiological Plant Anatomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physiological Plant Anatomy Classic Reprint written by G. Haberlandt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiological Plant Anatomy Since its first appearance in 1884, Professor Haberlandt's Physiologische Pflanzenanatomie has undergone revision and amplification on three successive occasions. In its present form, therefore, this work may be assumed to embody the mature and considered views of its author, with regard to that section of botanical science which he has made peculiarly his own. In order to retain, as far as possible, the fluency which is a prominent and agreeable feature of the original text, I have not scrupled to translate with some freedom, where necessary; at the same time, I have taken every care to ensure that the author's meaning should be faithfully reproduced throughout. The limited number of words and phrases for the insertion of which I am personally responsible, - for example the term photosynthesis on p.262 - are distinguished by being enclosed within square brackets. I desire to record my indebtedness to my wife for assistance in proof-revision and in the compilation of the indices, and to Professor F.0. Bower, Sc.D., F.E.S., for much helpful advice and encouragement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Textbook of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Textbook of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Nikolai Aleksandrovich Maximov and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Plant Physiology Plant physiology is an inseparable part of botany. It is closely connected with the study of morphology and anatomy of plants, since without a sufficient knowledge of plant structure an effective study of physiology is hardly possible. Recently plant physiology has been forming connections not only with plant ecology and plant geography but also with taxonomy. Plant physiology is passing gradually from the study of activities common to all plants to a consideration of the physiological distinctions that exist between various groups or even species. Book Plant Physiology and Ecology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plant Physiology and Ecology Classic Reprint written by Frederic Edward Clements and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Physiology and Ecology The point of view and the methods of study first advanced in "Research Methods in Ecology" have proved so satisfactory in teaching as to make it desirable to embody them in a text-book. The present text has been based largely upon "Research Methods," though most of the matter is new or rewritten. The manner of treatment is essentially the same, but the subject-matter has been rearranged and broken up into a larger number of chapters. The plant is first considered as an individual, with respect to factor, function, and form, and then as a member of a plant group or formation. The reasons for regarding ecology and physiology as essentially the same have been given elsewhere, and need not be repeated here. An endeavor has been made to give the various parts of this vast field their proper importance. Since ecology and physiology are merged, it is manifestly impossible to give to either what would be regarded as a complete treatment by a specialist in either line. No attempt has been made to touch all the points in each, but it is thought that nothing really fundamental has been omitted. The book is intended for use with classes in second-year botany in college and university. In manuscript form, it has been in such use for two years with good results. Although the amount of laboratory and field work is large, it is possible to accomplish all of it in a course requiring 6-8 hours of laboratory time each week. This can be done only by careful planning on the art of both instructor and student, and for this reason the following suggestions are offered as aids. The instructor will find it imperative to plan in advance for the experiments for the whole year, in order that plants may be ready as needed. Seeds and fruits for the study of migration should be collected in the fall. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Practical Text Book of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Daniel Trembly Macdougal and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical d104-Book of Plant Physiology The arrangement of the subject in the following pages is an effort to place before the student a method by which a working knowledge of the physiological complex of the plant 'may be ac quired. The disposition of the subject matter entailed by this treatment consists, briefly stated, in the study of the particular functions and properties of the organism, in connection with the agencies and forces which influence or initiate them, and a con sideration of the general processes of plant life. To this end the first portion of the book, inclusive of chapters I. - VII., is devoted chiefly to the special forms of irritability exhibited by typical organisms, and the second part is taken up with a more critical consideration of the broader phases of the activity of the plant a treatment of the subject well adapted to the convenience of the independent worker, and to the exigencies of instruction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present title Photosynthesis in Plants is a classical branch in plant physiology Biochemists purify photosynthetic enzymes and study their characteristics in the test tube; biophysicists isolate photosynthetic membranes and determine their spectroscopic properties in cuvettes; molecular biologists clone the genes that encode photosynthetic proteins and study their regulation during development. In contrast, plant physiologists study photosynthesis in action at different levels of organisation, including the chloroplast, the cell, the leaf and the whole plant. Stated differently, biochemists, biophysicists and molecular biologists study cellular components more or less in isolation, whereas plant physiologists investigate the way in which the components interact with each other to carry out biological processes and functions. Contents: Photophysiology, Process of Photosynthesis, Carbon in Photosynthesis, Role of Chlorophyll in Photosynthesis, Factors Affecting Photosynthesis, Effect of Heat Stress on Photosynthesis, Genetic Control of Photosynthesis, Algal Photosynthesis, Light Response Curve, Photosynthesis in Nature.

Book Elementary Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Daniel Trembly Macdougal and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Plant Physiology A translation of Oel's "Pflanzenphysiologische Versuche," by the author of this volume, was published in 1894, and the entire edition was exhausted within a few months after its appearance. A similar elementary text, "Experimental Plant Physiology," was prepared at once and published in 1895, the last copy of which was sold in October, 1901. Meanwhile the "Practical d104-book of Plant Physiology," presenting a brief outline of the entire subject, with details of experimental methods suitable for the exact analyses requisite in research work, has been brought, out. The present little volume has been arranged to replace the "Experimental Plant Physiology" (1895) and to meet the constantly increasing demand for a course in elementary demonstrations which may be followed by beginners in the subject of botany. Experimentation is purposely confined to the principles capable of demonstration by the simplest methods, and without the costly and complex apparatus of a fully equipped laboratory. Furthermore, an arrangement of the book into a number of courses has been made to meet the exigencies of instruction in schools of various types. I am indebted to Dr. C. C. Curtis, of Columbia University, and to Dr. H. M. Richards, of Barnard College, for many valuable suggestions and for their kindness in reading proofs. Download or read book Crop Photosynthesis written by N.R. Baker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since photosynthetic performance is a fundamental determinant of yield in the vast majority of crops, an understanding of the factors limiting photosynthetic productivity has a crucial role to play in crop improvement programmes. Photosynthesis, unlike the majority of physiological processes in plants, has been the subject of extensive studies at the molecular level for many years. This reductionist approach has resulted in the development of an impressive and detailed understanding of the mechanisms of light capture, energy transduction and carbohydrate biosynthesis, processes that are clearly central to the success of the plant and the productivity of crops. This volume examines in the widest context the factors determining the photosynthetic performance of crops. The emphasis throughout the book is on the setting for photosynthesis rather than the fundamental process itself. The book will prove useful to a wide range of plant scientists, and will encourage a more rapid integration of disciplines in the quest to understand and improve the productivity of crops by the procedures of classical breeding and genetic manipulation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Physiology: A Textbook for Colleges and Universities We have attempted throughout the text to bring into bold relief the fundamental principles of plant physiology rather than to present only an encyclopedic compilation of undigested and sometimes contradictory facts. Most of the discussion is based directly on data selected from the original literature much of which is presented in tabular or graphical form. A consistent attempt has been made to keep the discussion abreast of modern developments in plant physiology without neglecting concepts which have stood the test of time. Book Lectures on the Physiology of Plants Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on the Physiology of Plants Classic Reprint written by Julius von Sachs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Physiology of Plants After the fourth edition of my 'text-book of Botany' (1874) had nearly passed out of print, I received from the publishers, as well as from botanical friends, repeated invitations to prepare a fifth edition. It is, however, an old experience that while one works up with pleasure a second and even a third edition of a comprehensive work, frequent repetition eventually becomes inconvenient or even painful to the author. Having experienced this sufficiently with the fourth edition, I was unable to make up my mind to a fifth. Apart from other circumstances, I was driven to this to an important extent by the progressive development of my scientific convictions. My mode of comprehending important questions of the Physiology of Plants had undergone changes in various directions, particularly in consequence of my compilation of the 'history of Botany'; like others, more or less subject to'the prevailing Opinions of the present, I had held as important matters which I was gradually impelled to recognise as insignificant and tran sitory; higher stand-points and freer prospects opened out to me in the course of time, and the form of my text-book would no longer adapt itself to the advanced view. The artist may touch up his composition here and there with a few strokes of the pencil, or even make greater alterations; but that is not sufficient when the composition itself has ceased to be the expression of his idea. This is the position in which I find myself with respect to my text-book, Since the chief thing in it to me is the composition, the form of the exposition as a whole. Moreover for several years past the wish had been taking a more and more definite form in my mind, to set forth the most important results of the physiology of plants in such a manner that not only students, but also wider circles, Should be interested in them. That Object, however, is only to be attained by a freer form of exposition, and I believe I have found it in the choice of lectures. It is not only the right but also the duty of any one who lectures, however, to place in the foreground his own mode Of viewing the matter; the audience wish to know and should know how the science as a whole shapes itself in the mind of the lecturer, and it is comparatively unimportant whether others think the same or otherwise.
