Book The Philosophy of Wang Yang Ming Translated From the Chinese

Download or read book The Philosophy of Wang Yang Ming Translated From the Chinese written by Frederick Goodrich Henke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Wang Yang-Ming Translated From the Chinese Scholars, like other people, may be provincial; but the spirit of scholarship recognizes and values truth and wisdom from every source. Such recognition and appreciation have always been a factor in promoting mutual understanding and good will between nations. Western scholars have for some time had access to the older Chinese classics. A general esteem for Chinese ethics has resulted, which has contributed to ensure a friendly reception to the Chinese students and travelers who have visited Europe and America. But previous intercourse between Orient and Occident is, we may well believe, only a promise of far greater acquaintance. Everything points to a rapid increase of commercial and political relations. The East is learning what the West has thought and said; it is highly important that the West should know much more of the East. Accordingly, I am glad of an opportunity to prefix a cordial word of welcome to the translation of an important Chinese author, which a friend and former student of mine is presenting to the world of scholars and to all who would understand better the civilization and ideals of China. Dr. Henke has resided for several years in China, first as a missionary and then as a teacher of philosophy in the University of Nanking. He has had the advice and cooperation of Chinese scholars and has given a translation which, I believe, will be valuable not only in making accessible an author whose ideas suggest many interesting comparisons with those of certain thinkers, but also in adding to our understanding and appreciation of the East. Book The Great Synthesis of Wang Yangming Neo Confucianism in Korea

Download or read book The Great Synthesis of Wang Yangming Neo Confucianism in Korea written by and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated, edited, and introduced by Edward Y. J. Chung, The Great Synthesis of Wang Yangming Neo-Confucianism in Korea: The Chonŏn (Testament) by Chŏng Chedu (Hagok), is the first study in a Western language of Chŏng Chedu (Hagok, 1649–1736) and Korean Wang Yangming Neo-Confucianism. Hagok was an eminent philosopher who established the unorthodox Yangming school (Yangmyŏnghak) in Korea. This book includes an annotated scholarly translation of the Chonŏn 存言 (Testament), Hagok’s most important and interesting work on Confucian self-cultivation. Chung also provides a comprehensive introduction to Hagok’s life, scholarship, and thought, especially his great synthesis of Wang’s philosophy of mind cultivation and moral practice in relation to the classical teaching of Confucius and Mencius and his critical analysis of Zhu Xi Neo-Confucianism and its Sŏngnihak tradition. Chung concludes that Hagok was an original scholar in the Sŏngnihak school, a great transmitter and interpreter of Yangming Neo-Confucianism in Korea, and a creative thinker whose integration of these two traditions inaugurated a distinctively Korean system of ethics and spirituality. This book sheds new light on the breadth and depth of Korean Neo-Confucianism and serves as a primary source for philosophy and East Asian studies in general and Confucian studies and Korean religion and philosophy in particular.

Book The Unity of Knowledge and Action

Download or read book The Unity of Knowledge and Action written by Warren G. Frisina and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building upon insights from the sixteenth century Neo-Confucian Wang Yang-ming, the American pragmatist John Dewey, and the process philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, this book argues that knowledge is best understood as a form of action. Many of the most puzzling philosophic problems in the modern era can be traced to our tendency to assume that knowledge is separate from action. Letting go of the sharp knowledge-action distinction, however, makes possible a more coherent theory of knowledge that is more adaptive to the way we experience one another, the world, and ourselves. By responding directly to problems raised by contemporary thinkers like Charles Taylor, Donald Davidson, Richard Rorty, Daniel Dennett, Mark Johnson, George Lakoff, and Robert Neville, this book maps out a strategy for making progress in the contemporary quest for a "nonrepresentational theory of knowledge."

  • ISBN : 0824878329
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Confucianism written by Ming-huei Lee and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In Confucianism: Its Roots and Global Significance, English-language readers get a rare opportunity to read in a single volume the work of one of Taiwan’s most distinguished scholars. Although Ming-huei Lee has published in English before, the corpus of his non-Chinese writings is in German. Readers of this volume will soon discover the hard-mindedness and precision of thinking so associated with German philosophy as they enter into his discussions of Confucianism. As readers progress through this book, they will be constantly reminded that all philosophy should be truly comparative. . . . “The work is divided into three sections: Classical Confucianism and Its Modern Reinterpretations, Neo-Confucianism in China and Korea, and Ethics and Politics. These sections evince just some of the range of Ming-huei Lee’s thinking as well as his inclusive reach of Confucian philosophy to the whole of East Asia, especially to Korea. In the Ethics and Politics section, readers will get a taste for the return to his own tradition through the lens of Kantian philosophy with his analysis of Confucius and the virtue ethics debate in Confucian philosophical circles. Lee’s thinking through Mou Zongsan’s interpretation of Confucianism, Zhu Xi and the Huxiang scholars’ debate on ren, and the unfolding of the debates over the 'four buddings' and 'seven feelings' in Korea by Yi Toegye and Gi Gobong sets up the subsequent chapters of the book: a reconstruction of Wang Yangming’s philosophy and theories of democracy, and a critique of Jiang Qing’s 'political Confucianism.' His work in this book adds a sizable appendage to Confucian scholarship. Moreover, the interrelated ideas and arguments presented in this book are a special contribution to the Confucian project in English-speaking countries across the world.” —from the Editor’s Foreword An electronic version of this book is freely available thanks to the support of libraries working with Knowledge Unlatched, a collaborative initiative designed to make high-quality books open access for the public good.
