Book Thomas Aquinas Happiness Desire Virtue

Download or read book Thomas Aquinas Happiness Desire Virtue written by Stephen Theron and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Ethics, grade: No specific grade, Stockholm (Sankt Sigfrids Prästseminarium), course: Given as a course in ethics for seimarians, 1994, language: English, abstract: The crisis of ethics in our time calls for a synoptic view capable of kindling confident teleological motivation, in persons and societies. It is futile to search for the "clear and distinct idea" in a field of such universal importance as ethics, for which the ordinary discourse of humanity is well suited. Rather, our notions must be open, open to the analogies in things and situations, and open too to the real human situation in all its depth and breadth, such things as the desires of the human heart, the burdens of finitude, misfortune and death, the polarization of the sexes, the insights and traditions of religion, the exigences of politics, the compelling witness of the arts and of literature. The reason for this universal importance, such that a field of discourse considered especially intractable or even, recently, "queer" (J.L. Mackie), cannot be isolated as if somehow less scientific and hence inherently problematical or "emotive", was clearly stated by Aristotle when founding this science, this theoria of praxis. It is that ethics is concerned with the nature and end of man, with man, that is, in view of his characteristic action or praxis. That is to say, to take the short way for the present, it is the science of human happiness, of how to be happy. But this is the object of all human endeavour without exception. Hence, if its content be ever identified, e.g. as the vision of God, then it will follow that this content is the ultimate aim of all our civil and social arrangements, a conclusion that St. Thomas unhesitatingly draws.1 1 Summa contra gentiles III 37.

Book Introduction to the Philosophy of St Thomas Aquinas Volume 2

Download or read book Introduction to the Philosophy of St Thomas Aquinas Volume 2 written by H. D. Gardeil and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the brief span of some 140 pages Pere Gardeil succeeds remarkably well in the simple presentation of the Aristotelian principles of mobile being, quantity, motion, causation, place, time, inanity, the first mover, and astronomical theory. A second section (of some forty-five pages) selects five capital texts from the classic commentary of St. Thomas upon Aristotle's Physics and the full text of his model synopsis of Aristotelian cosmology in the early Paris opuscule, De Principiis Naturae. The translation of the original French work of 1953 has been accomplished with sober clarity and served editorially with a useful index and notes. Its frank, working language should attract both philosophical novice and pragmatic scientist alike and effect their working contact with a classic vision of the universe."--Philosophical Studies

Book Introduction to the Philosophy of St Thomas Aquinas Volume 3

This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Indispensable to a technical knowledge of the workings of God in the soul is a scientific grasp of human nature. In an admirably clear and concise form such an exposition of psychology has been provided for us by Father Gardeil . . .Writing his book around a judicious selection of texts from all the works of St. Thomas, and following the order of the De Anima of Aristotle, Father Gardeil supplies us with a volume which fits as easily into the hands of the natural scientist as into the hands of the theologian."--Cross and Crown"Briefly, this volume is an excellent contribution to a modern field of intellectual thought which direly needs the illumination and guidance of the Doctor Communis . . . Beyond a doubt, this volume is a 'must' for all Catholic philosophy teachers."--Dominicana

Book excerpt: The third volume of newly translated selections from the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Fr. Richard Regan turns to his thoughts on the moral dimensions of human action. Focusing on the first part of the second folume of the Summa Theologiae, he deals with such topics as the ultimate human goal, human acts, emotions and virtues. Regan indicates that though Aquinas approaches these topics from the perspective of human reason, it is necessary for the reader to remember that his overall viewpoint is that of a believer seeking to understand his faith. All can weigh the merits of these propositions due to their clarity of language, exposition, and structure.
