Book Coleridge Notebooks V3 Notes

Download or read book Coleridge Notebooks V3 Notes written by Kathleen Coburn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 997 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2002. Volume 3 of the Notes on the Notebooks of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, spanning from 1804 to 1819. The volume is in two parts, text and notes. During his adult life until his death in 1834, Coleridge made entries in more than sixty notebooks. Neither commonplace books nor diaries, but something of both, they contain notes on literary, theological, philosophical, scientific, social and psychological matters, plans for and fragments of works and many other items of great interest. Shortly after World War II, Kathleen Coburn, formerly of Victoria College in Toronto, rediscovered this great collection of unpublished manuscripts. With the support of the Coleridge estate, she embarked on a career of editing and publishing these volumes and was awarded with many honours for her work, including: a Leverhulme Award (1948), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1953), a Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada (1958), the Order of Canada (1974) and an honorary doctorate from her own university. Originally projected as a five volume set (each volume consisting of a book of text and a book of notes).

Book A Station Favorable to the Pursuits of Science Primary Materials in the History of Mathematics at the United States Military Academy

Download or read book A Station Favorable to the Pursuits of Science Primary Materials in the History of Mathematics at the United States Military Academy written by Joe Albree, David C. Arney, V. Frederick Rickey and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the rich collection of mathematical works located at the nation's first military school, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. It outlines the relevant history of the Academy, discusses the mathematics department and curriculum, and describes the development of the library during the nineteenth century. A major part of this book is an annotated catalog of the more than 1300 works published between 1496 and 1915 found in the West Point library. Mathematics and its instruction greatly influenced the development of the Academy, the technological growth of America's army, and the standards of the military profession. These events, in turn, were crucial to the overall development of mathematics, mechanics, and engineering during the nineteenth century in the United States. Three individuals played a prominent role in this chronicle: Sylvanus Thayer, Charles Davies, and Albert Church. Listed are rare and historically valuable works in a broad range of mathematical subjects. The collection clearly shows the strong European influence on the early Academy. Also listed are numerous textbooks by West Point faculty and graduates; significant contributions were made by these writers to algebra, geometry, calculus, descriptive geometry, mechanics, surveying, and mathematics education. This book provides an important resource for the general audience as well as for those in pursuit of more scholarly information. It contains many interesting photographs and valuable details about the West Point collection. It is a must-have for anyone interested in mathematical books and collections.

Book Proclus the Successor on Poetics and the Homeric Poems

Download or read book Proclus the Successor on Poetics and the Homeric Poems written by Proclus and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Proclus's "Commentary on the Republic of Plato" contains in its fifth and sixth essays the only systematic analysis of the workings of the allegorical text to reach us from polytheist. In the context of defending Homer against the criticisms leveled by Socrates in the "Republic," Proclus, a late-antique polytheist thinker, provides not only a rich selection of interpretive material, but also an analysis of Homer's polysemous text whose influence can be observed in the work of the founder of modern semiotics, Charles Sanders Peirce. This first modern translation into English, with Greek text facing and limited commentary, makes it possible to appreciate the importance of Proclus in the history of both hermeneutics and semiotics." --Cover, p. 4.

Book How Greek Science Passed On To The Arabs

Download or read book How Greek Science Passed On To The Arabs written by Delacy O'Leary and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2002. The history of science is one of knowledge being passed from community to community over thousands of years, and this is the classic account of the most influential of these movements -how Hellenistic science passed to the Arabs where it took on a new life and led to the development of Arab astronomy and medicine which flourished in the courts of the Muslim world, later passing on to medieval Europe. Starting with the rise of Hellenism in Asia in the wake of the campaigns of Alexander the Great, O'Leary deals with the Greek legacy of science, philosophy, mathematics and medicine and follows it as it travels across the Near East propelled by religion, trade and conquest. Dealing in depth with Christianity as a Hellenizing force, the influence of the Nestorians and the Monophysites; Indian influences by land and sea and the rise of Buddhism, O'Leary then focuses on the development of science during the Baghdad Khalifate, the translation of Greek scientific material into Arabic, and the effect for all those interested in the history of medicine and science, and of historical geography as well as the history of the Arab world.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study examines the motivations and doctrinal coherence of the Commentary on the Elements of Theology of Proclus written by Berthold of Moosburg, O.P. (+c. 1361/1363). It provides an overview of Berthold's biography and intellectual contexts, his manuscript remains, and a partial edition of his annotations on Macrobius and Proclus. Through a close analysis of the three prefaces to the Commentary, giving special attention to his sources, it traces Berthold's elaboration of Platonism as a soteriological science. The content of this science is then presented in a systematic reconstruction of Berthold's cosmology and anthropology. The volume includes an English translation of the three fundamental prefaces of the Commentary"--
