Book The Gender of Photography

Download or read book The Gender of Photography written by Nicole Hudgins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would be unthinkable now to omit early female pioneers from any survey of photography's history in the Western world. Yet for many years the gendered language of American, British and French photographic literature made it appear that women's interactions with early photography did not count as significant contributions. Using French and English photo journals, cartoons, art criticism, novels, and early career guides aimed at women, this volume will show why and how early photographic clubs, journals, exhibitions, and studios insisted on masculine values and authority, and how Victorian women engaged with photography despite that dominant trend. Focusing on the period before 1890, when women were yet to develop the self-assurance that would lead to broader recognition of the value of their work, this study probes the mechanisms by which exclusion took place and explores how women practiced photography anyway, both as amateurs and professionals. Challenging the marginalization of women’s work in the early history of photography, this is essential reading for students and scholars of photography, history and gender studies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amateur Photographer, Vol. 17: An Illustrated Popular Journal, Devoted to the Interests of Photography and Kindred Arts and Sciences; January to June, 1893 Increased attention has been paid' to technical training for photographers, and the P. S. G. B. Commenced in the early part of the year a series of lectures with this end in view. The Affiliation of Societies has received greater support, and would doubtless receive more if the advantages to the societies were placed more prominently before them. The proposal of a Photographic Institute and centre for the dissemination of photographic technology has been brought prominently forward by such able exponents of the scheme as Prof. Meldola H. Elder, Howard Farmer, and others, and whilst the Photographic Society of Great Britain have been appealed to as the proper body to take the initiative steps, everything but the mere discussion of the idea remains as yet to be done. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the foremost American painters of the 19th century, Eakins (1844-1916) was also a pioneer photographer, his most innovative aspect being his emphasis on the nude, then rarely encountered in the US. This catalogue of the Eakins photographs in the Pennsylvania Academy's Charles Bregler collection includes about three-fourths of Eakins' photographic output. It describes the entire collection of 648 images, reproducing 173 bandw photographs, 52 duotones, and a portfolio section of 16 tritones. The accompanying essays suggest new ways of looking at the photographs in terms not only of Eakins' own art but also of the history of the medium. 10.25x9.75" Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Rethinking Ethos

Download or read book Rethinking Ethos written by Kathleen J. Ryan and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labels traditionally ascribed to women—mother, angel of the house, whore, or bitch—suggest character traits that do not encompass the complexities of women’s identities or empower women’s public speaking. Rethinking Ethos: A Feminist Ecological Approach to Rhetoric redefines the concept of ethos—classically thought of as character or credibility—as ecological and feminist, negotiated and renegotiated, and implicated in shifting power dynamics. Building on previous feminist and rhetorical scholarship, this essay collection presents a sustained discussion of the unique methods by which women’s ethos is constructed and transformed. Editors Kathleen J. Ryan, Nancy Myers, and Rebecca Jones identify three rhetorical maneuvers that characterize ethos in the feminist ecological imaginary: ethe as interruption/interrupting, ethe as advocacy/advocating, and ethe as relation/relating. Each section of the book explores one of these rhetorical maneuvers. An afterword gathers contributors’ thoughts on the collection’s potential impact and influence, possibilities for future scholarship, and the future of feminist rhetorical studies. With its rich mix of historical examples and contemporary case studies, Rethinking Ethos offers a range of new perspectives, including queer theory, transnational approaches, radical feminism, Chicana feminism, and indigenous points of view, from which to consider a feminist approach to ethos.
