A dishonest Median minister assigns unjust tax burdens to them out of cruelty and also plots directly with the banned princess against Prince Cyrus to either cause him trouble with his grandfather, or to kill him. Cyrus and his father are severely injured by shocking physical punishments. This leads to the death of his father and Cyrus inherits the crown, but he is unable to reign in peace. Friends are hard to find. Tribal and clan leaders in Persia are reluctant to trust the new king's ability to govern or to protect their peasants. He seeks support from other nations and extended family members, but their response is shallow. King Cyrus gets limited aid from secret allies. A powerful man Cyrus respects provides timely help, and unexpected success presents the new king with broader problems.

During the Perso-Roman wars of 337-363, Roman forces abandoned their traditional reliance on a strategic offensive to bring about a decisive victory. Instead, the Emperor Constantius II adopted a defensive strategy and conducted a mobile defense based upon small frontier forces defending fortified cities. These forces were then supported by limited counteroffensives by the Field Army of the East. These methods successfully checked Persian assaults for twenty-four years. However, when Julian became emperor, his access to greater resources tempted him to abandon mobile defense in favor of a major invasion aimed at regime change in Persia. Although he reached the Persian capital, he failed to take it. In fact, he was defeated in battle and killed. The Romans subsequently resumed and refined the mobile defense, allowing the Eastern provinces to survive the fall of the Western Empire. In this fascinating study, John Harrel applies his personal experience of military command to a strategic, operational, tactical and logistical analysis of these campaigns and battles, highlighting their long-term significance.

Book excerpt: Women’s Deliberation: The Heroine in Early Modern French Women’s Theater (1650–1750) argues that women playwrights question traditional views on women through their heroines. Denied the powers of cleverness, the authority of deliberation, and the right to speak, heroines were often excluded from central roles in plays by leading male playwrights from this period. Women playwrights, on the other hand, embraced the ideas necessary to expand the boundaries of female heroism. Heroines in plays from the mid-seventeenth through the mid-eighteenth centuries reflect a shift in mentalities toward rationality and female agency. I argue that the "deliberative heroine," emerging at the dawn of the eighteenth century, is the most fully developed, exuding all the characteristics of the modern-day heroine. Although she embodies many of the qualities of her heroine counterparts, she also responds to them. Only the deliberative heroine, based on Enlightenment ideals—such as women’s ability to rationalize and the complex interplay between reason and sentiment—truly liberates female characters from a history of traditional roles. Whereas other heroines act in accordance with social construct or on impulse, the "deliberative heroine" realizes the ideals of the seventeenth-century salons that petitioned for women to have "greater control over their own bodies" (DeJean 21). She is active, and her determination to follow through with her own line of reasoning—that involves both mind and heart—enables her to determine the outcome of events. In the end, this new generation of heroines ushered in an era where women playwrights could make their own contribution to dramatic works at the dawn of the Age of Enlightenment.

I shall prove in the sequel of this Preface with what facility that may be done by this printed edition, so as to accommodate it to the other form of Five Acts without reprinting it again; and thus the advantage, flowing from the present Variations, will equally attach to both respective forms, if the following instructions are obeyed. The first difference consists in the division of the Choral Song. This was inserted originally towards the end of the Second Act, and then consisted of sixty verses in twenty stanzas, which included three lines of lyrick measure.
