Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to the controversy surrounding drug use and drug criminalization, Thomas Szasz suggests that the "therapeutic state" has overstepped its bounds in labeling certain drugs as "dangerous" substances and incarcerating drug "addicts" in order to cure them. Szasz shows that such policies scapegoat certain drugs as well as the persons who sell, buy, or use them; and 'misleadingly pathologize the "drug problem" by defining disapproved drug use as "disease" and efforts to change the behavior as "treatment." Readers will find in Szasz's arguments a cogent and committed response to a worldwide debate.

Book Drugs and Drug Policy

Download or read book Drugs and Drug Policy written by Clayton J. Mosher and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2007 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drugs and Drug Policy: The Control of Consciousness Alteration provides a cross-national perspective on the regulation of drug use by examining and critiquing drug policies in the United States and abroad in terms of their scope, goals, and effectiveness. In this engaging text, authors Clayton J. Mosher and Scott Akins discuss the physiological, psychological, and behavioral effects of legal and illicit drugs; the patterns and correlates of use; and theories of the "causes" of drug use. Key Features: * Offers more coverage of drug policy issues than competitive books: This book addresses the number of significant developments over the last few decades that suggest the dynamics of drug use and policies to deal with drug use are at a critical juncture. The book also considers the issue of "American exceptionalism" with respect to drug policies through a detailed analysis of emerging drug polices in other Western nations. * Makes explicit comparisons between legal and illegal drugs: Due to their prevalence of use, this book devotes considerable attention to the use and regulation of legal drugs in society. The book illustrates that commonly prescribed medications are similar to drugs that are among the most feared and harshly punished in society and that drug-related problems do not necessarily result from particular drugs, but from how drugs are used. * Includes many pedagogical tools: With chapter opening photos and more photos throughout, this text presents material in a student- friendly fashion. Highlight boxes provide interesting examples for readers; encourage further emphasis on issues; and serve as important topics for in class writing exercises. In addition, Internet exercises and review questions reinforce key points made in the chapter and prompt classroom discussion.

Book Pain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Keith Wailoo
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2014-05-15
  • ISBN : 1421413663
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Pain written by Keith Wailoo and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain touches sensitive nerves in American liberalism, conservatism, and political life. In this history of American political culture, Keith Wailoo examines how pain has defined the line between liberals and conservatives from just after World War II to the present. From disabling pain to end-of-life pain to fetal pain, the battle over whose pain is real and who deserves relief has created stark ideological divisions at the bedside, in politics, and in the courts. Beginning with the return of soldiers after World War II and fierce medical and political disagreements about whether pain constitutes a true disability, Wailoo explores the 1960s rise of an expansive liberal pain standard along with the emerging conviction that subjective pain was real, disabling, and compensable. These concepts were attacked during the Reagan era, when a conservative backlash led to diminished disability aid and an expanding role of courts as arbiters in the politicized struggle to define pain. New fronts in pain politics opened nationwide as advocates for death with dignity insisted that end-of-life pain warranted full relief, while the religious right mobilized around fetal pain. The book ends with the 2003 OxyContin arrest of conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh, a cautionary tale about deregulation and the widening gaps between the overmedicated and the undertreated.

Download or read book KGB Persecuted Christians written by Galina V Andreyev and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was raised in a Christian family of 15 children. I wrote this true story about my family how the KGB tortured us with experimental drugs, because my father Vladimir Khailo wanted a freedom of Faith. Behind the closed "Iron Curtain," the KGB persecuted faithful Christians including my parents. My parents started an Independent Church in our house. In doing so, our family was subjected to intense persecution by the KGB. For seven years, my father was tortured for Christ with experimental drugs in one of the strictest psychiatric prisons in the Soviet Union, where he spent his time with mass-murderers and the KGB had used bio-weapons and other drug experiments on him. Throughout it all, my father maintained his Faith, saying: "I have committed my way to the Lord. I know that Jesus is the Truth and He is the Way to Heaven!" The Christian Solidarity International, US Congress and President Ronald Reagan found out about our situation, they demanded for our freedom. In 1987, when the USSR was still locked, my family was allowed by President Mikhail Gorbachev to leave the USSR. My family was the first largest family ever permitted to leave the Soviet Union. My family was allowed, with greatest exception, to enter the United States of America. This is a miracle that was performed by our God. What was impossible for the family, God made it possible. God raised my family up, to more than we could be! Galina V Andreyev, Khailo

Book Honest Nutrition

Download or read book Honest Nutrition written by Ira Edwards and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honest Nutrition is an attempt to do what textbooks and hundreds of diet books do not. Nutrition textbooks do not tell you that this science is in its infancy, nor how many "scientific" claims are open to question, based on faulty research or simple hunches. If they include some of the biochemical and physiological context of nutrition, they still omit financial, social and political aspects. After attempting to understand the prejudice against vitamins and supplements among the industrial-medical-political Big Brother (IMP-BB) and the lack of evidence for most alternatives, there is still some useful information. Opposing philosophies are denoted as SUPR (SUrgery-PRescription orientation) and UTHR (Unconventional Therapies, Herbal Remedies.) Honest Nutrition uses a large alphabetical section to give easy access to useful information about many diseases and nutritional therapies. Honest Nutrition includes information about hormone resistance diseases, cryptic infections as a cause of "unknown etiology" diseases, and the effect of nutrition on behavior and criminality. Some claims: 1. Obesity always involves hormones, sometimes with positive-feedback loops, which is why "Just eat less and exercise" seldom works. 2. A major factor in arterial disease is viscous blood, resulting in part from a lack of omega-3 fat. Cholesterol lowering does not help. 3. Some heart attacks may be due to hormonal effects, involving the hormone ouabain, and preventable with an extract of the herb strophanthus. 4. Many, or most North Americans suffer serious lack of nutrients: vitamin D, magnesium, and plant nutrients. The author challenges the medical establishment to examine their doctrines and learn how to help people suffering from nutritional diseases. Many technical terms are included. The non-scientific reader is asked to skip over these, to gain a useful knowledge of nutrition.
