Book The Performance and Design of Ram air Gliding Parachutes

Download or read book The Performance and Design of Ram air Gliding Parachutes written by J. S. Lingard and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Available literature on ram-air parachutes generally describe either experimental studies or the development of specific systems. Little fundamental analysis has been attempted. This Report reviews current knowledge and, where appropriate, formulates a theoretical basis for ram-air parachute design. Theoretical analysis fo inflation is found to be intractable due to the complication of reefing devices. A theoretical model for glide performance is developed from wing theory. Predictions compare favourably with experiment. Improvements in aerodynamic efficiency with increasing aspect ratio are largely negated by increased line drag. Optimum aspect ratio and line length and the potential for glide performance improvement are discussed. The effects of lift/draf ratio, wing laoding, control deflection, and wind, on rate of descent an dhorizontal velocity are demonstrated. Glide and control effectiveness are strongly influenced by rigging. A dynamic stability model is presented. Longitudinal control, flare and gust response are investigated. Stability is shown to increase with increasing altitutde, store mass and line length."--Summary, page 1.

Book A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study on the Aerodynamic Performance of Ram air Parachutes

Download or read book A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study on the Aerodynamic Performance of Ram air Parachutes written by Angelo A. Fonseca Pazmiño and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modeling of the ram-air parachute presents challenges in the prediction of the inflight geometry, as there is a strong interaction between the flow field and parachute structure. This thesis presents the development of a CAD design and CFD methodology to the simulation of ram-air parachutes in steady-state conditions. Starting from a 2D rib drawing, methods were developed to approximate the 3D geometry and efficiently model the parachute as a rigid and impermeable body. The use of distortions was implemented on a 2D, pseudo-2D, and 3D model to enhance their behavior during a real flight. The SST turbulence model was chosen for the modeling of these designs because of its suitability to predict flow separation and reattachment from adverse pressure gradients. The high complexity of the 3D model is handled using appropriate boundary conditions and cleaning geometric tools within the CFD software. Visualization of the fluid flow parameters such as lift and drag coefficients at different angles of attack allow to evaluate aerodynamic performance at the specified flight conditions and provide clear trends for best model shapes. The computational results were compared to other experimental and numerical studies.

Book A Philosophical Basis for the Use of High performance Gliding Parachutes in Ejection Seat Aircraft

Download or read book A Philosophical Basis for the Use of High performance Gliding Parachutes in Ejection Seat Aircraft written by Manley C. Butler and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents evidence and arguments for the use of ram-air inflated, gliding parachute wings in ejection seat aircraft. The advantages of the parachute are presented, along with numerous performance charts showing the effects of glide and wind on impact energy, impact velocity and angle, potential landing area and potential range. Performance data gathered in the Aircrew Gliding Escape System (AGES) Program are presented and contrasted with similar data from competing parachute systems. The analysis shows that the ram-air inflated gliding parachute wing is the most promising parachute available in the near future and offers significant benefits in safety and performance over the 28-foot diameter, flat circular parachute.

Book Parachute Recovery Systems

Download or read book Parachute Recovery Systems written by Theo W. Knacke and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide recovery system engineers in government and industry with tools to evaluate, analyze, select, and design parachute recovery systems. These systems range from simple, one-parachute assemblies to multiple-parachute systems, and may include equipment for impact attenuation, flotation, location, retrieval, and disposition. All system aspects are discussed, including the need for parachute recovery, the selection of the most suitable recovery system concept, concept analysis, parachute performance, force and stress analysis, material selection, parachute assembly and component design, and manufacturing. Experienced recovery system engineers will find this publication useful as a technical reference book; recent college graduates will find it useful as a textbook for learning about parachutes and parachute recovery systems; and technicians with extensive practical experience will find it useful as an engineering textbook that includes a chapter on parachute- related aerodynamics. In this manual, emphasis is placed on aiding government employees in evaluating and supervising the design and application of parachute systems. The parachute recovery system uses aerodynamic drag to decelerate people and equipment moving in air from a higher velocity to a lower velocity and to a safe landing. This lower velocity is known as rate of descent, landing velocity, or impact velocity, and is determined by the following requirements: (1) landing personnel uninjured and ready for action, (2) landing equipment and air vehicles undamaged and ready for use or refurbishment, and (3) impacting ordnance at a preselected angle and velocity.

Book Study of Parachute Performance and Design Parameters for High Dynamic Pressure Operation

Download or read book Study of Parachute Performance and Design Parameters for High Dynamic Pressure Operation written by United States. Wright Air Development Division and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasis is placed on the primary objective of this program which is to advance the state of the art of parachute design in a region of high dynamic pressure. In support of this objective, a sled test program will be carried out to substantiate theoretical aerodynamic and strength analyses and detail designs of the test parachutes. Design of those areas which are not amenable to theoretical analysis, or in which the theoretical analysis may be found at fault, will be improved based on test data results.
