Book THE PERCEIVED ROLES OF PRINCIPALS RELATIVE TO THEIR FUNCTIONS AS INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERS

Download or read book THE PERCEIVED ROLES OF PRINCIPALS RELATIVE TO THEIR FUNCTIONS AS INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERS written by Donnalyn Patricia King and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a qualitative study designed to investigate how principals and selected staff members perceive the principal as an instructional leader. Specifically, it attempted to ascertain whether there was any divergence between the perceptions of the teachers and the principals. The focal group comprising the sample of thirty-five constituted five principals, five vice-principals and twenty-five classroom teachers. The demographic composition of the sample has been summarized in table 3.1 according to variables relating to gender, teaching experience, qualifications and professional status. The study was guided by the following four research questions: 1. To what extent do principals in selected primary schools engage in tasks that constitute instructional leadership? 2. What is the nature of the tasks relating to instructional leadership in which the principals engage? 3. What are some of the activities mitigating the effectiveness of the principal in executing his/her role as an instructional leader? 4. In what ways does the school benefit from the role of the principal as an instructional leader? The main data collecting instruments involved questionnaires, interviews and observation schedule. A table of alignment illustrated the relationship between the four major research questions and the items in the interview and questionnaires. The results indicated divergence between the view of the principals and those of the teachers relative to the role of the principals as instructional leaders. The findings carry important educational implications for the administration of schools and the delivery of instruction.

Book Principal Self efficacy Teacher Perceptions of Principal Performance and Teacher Job Satisfaction

Download or read book Principal Self efficacy Teacher Perceptions of Principal Performance and Teacher Job Satisfaction written by Molly Lynn Evans and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In public schools, the principal's role is of paramount importance in influencing teachers to excel and to keep their job satisfaction high. The self-efficacy of leaders is an important characteristic of leadership, but this issue has not been extensively explored in school principals. Using internet-based questionnaires, this study obtained scores on the self-report Principal Sense of Efficacy Scale, including areas of management, instructional, and moral leadership, of 50 elementary, middle, and high school principals in Arizona. These scores were compared to their teachers' perceptions of their leadership (N = 1403 across the 50 schools), using the Leadership Behavior Survey, including subscales on human relations, trust/decision making, instructional leadership, control, and conflict. Teachers reported intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction on the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. As hypothesized, teacher job satisfaction was strongly related to perceptions of their principal's leadership in all areas (total satisfaction ©7 overall perception: r = .645, p

Book A Study of the Perceptions of Leadership Behaviors and the Morale of Elementary Teachers in a Selected School District

Download or read book A Study of the Perceptions of Leadership Behaviors and the Morale of Elementary Teachers in a Selected School District written by Jacob S. Sherwood and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of student accountability has led some researchers to suggest the increase of teacher attrition is tied to the increase of accountability. Although some may suggest the teacher attrition rate is tied to accountability, this study explored the relationship of elementary teacher morale and the leadership of elementary principals and how that leadership may play a role in teacher morale and a possible factor in the teacher attrition. While many quantitative studies have been conducted on teacher morale and principal behaviors, this study analyzed principal behaviors through the lens of transformational leadership, gathering data in a qualitative method through individual teacher and administrator interviews. The findings, implications and recommendations of this study are a result of the data that were gathered through individual interviews. There were four common positive themes which principals and teachers believed impacted teacher morale in a positive manner including teacher support, teacher feedback, shared leadership and creating a family culture. There were five common themes principals and teachers believed to have a negative impact on teacher morale including negativity, lack of support, change or new initiatives, valuing teachers and common core curriculum. Additional emergent themes were also identified and discussed in the conclusions of this study. The findings are intended to change the leadership approach of principals in order to increase teacher morale and student achievement and decrease teacher attrition.

Book Principal Leadership and Its Perceived Influence on Teacher Morale in Elementary Schools

Download or read book Principal Leadership and Its Perceived Influence on Teacher Morale in Elementary Schools written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to construct a theoretical framework explaining the connection between principal leadership practices and the phenomenon of teacher morale. The study also focused on principal leadership practices and the perceived effects that style has on how teachers feel about themselves and their jobs. First, a review of extant literature defined what constitutes effective leadership in school related environments. Second, the researcher defined teacher morale, both high and low, and how it relates to work performance. Third, the researcher attempted to explore how teacher morale and the leadership style of their principals relate. This qualitative study was conducted using interviews of teachers from 7 public elementary schools. Post interview journaling was also conducted by the researcher to capture immediate author perspective. The teachers were interviewed to gain their perceptions of leadership practices that motivate them to enjoy their jobs and work beyond status quo. With information gleaned from teachers, the desired outcome of this research was for principals to self-evaluate their leadership strategies and style and to find importance in building high teacher morale for the betterment of everyone. The researcher coded transcripts into themes, patterns, and the following theoretical constructs: (a) change, (b) leadership practices, (c) mandated testing, (d) stress, (e) communication, (f) acknowledgment, (g) professionalism (h) identifying with teachers, and (i) building community.

Book Teachers Perceptions of the Roles of Principals as Instructional Leaders in distinguished high Performing and needs Improvement low Performing Middle Schools in Urban Metropolitan Atlanta Georgia

Download or read book Teachers Perceptions of the Roles of Principals as Instructional Leaders in distinguished high Performing and needs Improvement low Performing Middle Schools in Urban Metropolitan Atlanta Georgia written by Wanda Powe Greenwood and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A total of 278 teachers participated in this study. This study was designed to examine how teachers from "distinguished" (high performing) and "needs improvement" (low performing) middle schools perceived the roles of their principals as instructional leaders who could provide schools with the necessary leadership characteristics for school improvement. This study also examined if differences existed among teachers' perceptions of their principals' roles based on school type and demographics (gender, age, years of work experience, and educational attainment). The principal leadership questionnaire (PLQ) was used to collect data based on the five factors: identify and articulate vision and provide inspiration, foster acceptance of group goals, provide appropriate model, provide intellectual stimulation, and provide individualized support. Cronbach alpha was used to establish the internal consistency of the instrument. Data were analyzed using mean scores, percentages, t-tests and ANOVA. The findings indicated that the participants had positive perceptions with strongly agreed to agreed responses on most of the questionnaire items indicating that teachers perceived their principals should possess the characteristics associated with instructional leadership. Female participants consistently agreed with higher mean scores on all five PLQ factors than did male participants. The researcher recommended that further research and a longitudinal study be conducted on this topic to examine and compare leadership preparation programs in Georgia and other states across the nation and to determine the long-term effects of instructional leadership roles on student achievement.
