In particular, this study investigated delivery, efficiency, student engagement, assessment/feedback, and intervention and how 1:1 iPads allowed for new approaches to lesson delivery that would otherwise be difficult to impossible without 1:1 iPads. This study showed how in the 2013-14 school year in a Midwestern Suburban 7th grade Pre Algebra classroom the teacher graded and analyzed the class's work far faster than previously possible. Once the teacher started to become more efficient, the teacher had an opportunity to update teaching practices to match the needs of the classroom. The teacher prepared for lessons in a way that was not previously possible, including meeting with each student with more frequency and improved accuracy of what students needed help and with what topics. The teacher became so efficient that he was even able to run a hybrid classroom.

Book excerpt: This qualitative research study examined the perceptions of middle school teachers and administrators regarding the impact of one-to-one devices on pedagogical practices. In addition, the perceptions of factors that impact the implementation of one-to-one technology into classroom activities and instruction were also studied. The study was conducted in three middle schools in Pennsylvania currently implementing a one-to-one initiative in which every student is issued a personal computing device for use at school and outside of the school. Participants in the study included 57 teachers and five administrators who responded to a survey consisting of both Likert-scale and open-ended questions. Five teachers and three administrators also participated in an additional interview with the researcher. Results from the study indicated that teachers and administrators perceive that pedagogical practices have been positively impacted by one-to-one implementation. However, traditional pedagogical practices are still being widely used in classrooms, and devices are being used more to supplement than transform instruction. Teacher and administrator perceptions also differed in how one-to-one devices are impacting instruction. Factors that were found to positively impact one-to-one implementation included administrative support, student value of devices as a learning tool, clear expectations of student usage, and student training. The distractibility of the device, lack of student training, and time for professional development were factors that were perceived as challenges to implementation. Findings from the study showed that teachers and administrators recognize the value and potential of technology in education; however, the support structures that are essential to a disruptive innovation (e.g., professional development, stakeholder involvement and student training) have been underdeveloped.

Book excerpt: Staff at a diverse, suburban junior high school were surveyed about the 1:1 iPad implementation program that is in its third and final year of integration. Staff were surveyed with questions about their perceptions of the use of iPads in a 1:1 classroom, their understanding of the educational affordances of the iPad, and the actual use and frequency of their use of iPads in their classrooms. Overall, staff at XJH perceived the iPad to be useful in the educational setting. However, results indicated staff are not understanding the affordances, with most reporting little understanding of five of the seven iPad affordances. Staff indicated they utilized about three affordances at a frequency of four or more times a week. Results suggest that teachers' positive perceptions of iPads with a more advanced understanding of how to best utilize iPads may potentially transform teaching in ways that benefit 21st century students. Further research is needed to study the transformational potential of iPad use in the classroom as well as possible connections between perceptions of the usefulness of iPads in education and actual usage.

This is done by investigating how teachers are using iPads in a 1:1 implementation setting, what professional development teachers are given for iPads, and the attitudes of students using iPads in a 1:1 setting. Participants of the study include 30 eighth grade students and 4 teachers in a rural Western New York middle school. Each participant is currently involved in a 1:1 iPad implementation in the selected school district. The researcher gathered data in the form of a student survey, teacher interviews, and classroom observations. The results of this study concluded that teachers had a positive perception of using iPads for instruction. There were many benefits to the use of the technology in a variety of ways. Students were found to have positive attitudes when it came to the use of the iPads except when it came to reading on the iPad. This research may serve as a guide to districts who currently do not have a 1:1 iPad implementation, and are currently attempting to pursue that path of instruction in their school district. Book excerpt: This qualitative study was designed to analyze the perceptions of elementary teachers regarding the impact of 1:1 technology on classroom instruction and student learning. The study focused on four schools in southeastern Pennsylvania. The participants were elementary (K-6) teachers involved in a 1:1 technology implementation for at least one year. The research explored the findings from the responses of 73 total educators. The participants completed a researcher constructed online survey that was a combination of Likert-scale questions and open-ended responses. Further questions were given to participants who elected to be interviewed by the researcher. The survey and interview questions were designed to examine (1) what types of supports are needed to effectively utilize 1:1 technology that was implemented (2) what changes to teachers' instructional strategies occurred due to the 1:1 technology (3) what was the impact of the 1:1 technology on student learning in the classroom. Results of the study revealed that the majority of the participants agreed that the 1:1 technology initiative changed instruction in a positive manner to meet the needs of their students due to relevant, purposeful, and meaningful staff development opportunities. These changes increased student motivation and engagement which in turn increased student learning.
