Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Museum Bulletin, Vol. 22: Published at Memorial Hall, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, by the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art; October 1926 There is no question that Pennell himself was a master of technique, and that this mastery-was due to hard work. Whistler, so Pennell says, spent three weeks drawing on the plate of The Black Lion Wharf. How hard I tried to approach it! Pennell adds. He was a prodigious worker and sound technician. But he was not a student of human nature. He did not follow Rembrandt and the old Dutch masters in the study of human life. Activities, not emotions, interested him; his appeal is not to the hearts and souls of humanity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Museum Bulletin, Vol. 20: Published at Memorial Hall, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia; February 1925The wonderful natural resources of the Province of Pennsylvania caused many capable and energetic men among these settlers to attempt the making of iron. There were great ore beds; the thickly wooded country gave endless charcoal, and swiftly flowing streamsprovided water power. Much money was needed, however, as well as intelligence and hope, even for the smallest beginning, and usually, after a few years, the undertaking would either fail or pass into new ownership. Possibly the most noted among these unfortunate men is Henry William Stiegel, who failed after being successful for a number of years. This was not the fate of all, however. Others determined to carry out their early ambitions to become great iron masters, fought their way through many difficulties Until their dreams were realized, and their names, industries and fortunes have been handed down to the present day.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We know certainly that the Wei rulers had slaves from many portions of their Empire at work at various times, but any vigorous nation, in an active state of civilizing itself, could find, even among its own people, workers apt enough to execute such sculpture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Museum Bulletin, Vol. 72: November, 1922 To quote from the Preface: It has been the aim of the com pilers to present the facts in the light of modern art criticism regard ing each artist and each picture as completely as was consistent with their historical importance and significance.' A catalogue should be not only an explanatory guide book, but an authoritative work of reference. This aim has been, it is felt, most satisfactorily achieved; not only the biographical details of the artists are fully given, but as far as possible facts have been assembled about each picture which enable the student more than ever before to trace its early history and to determine its period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Museum Bulletin, Vol. 18: March 1923 The second panel shows three knights, similarly clad, hewing bushes or young trees with swords and hatchets. The middle knight wears a rose-lavender colored hauberk, with white chain mail on his legs. The two side knights are clad in white with ruby hose and ruby belts about their waists. It is to be noticed that the knight on the right has his sword in his ruby scabbard, for, unlike the others, he wields an axe. In other respects the coloring of the panel is like the other, with. A blue background and ruby border, but there appear to be more restored portions. Probably but half of this medallion has its original glass. The trees are stranger than those of the first; rose lavender and pale green, curling and twisting, they resemble the stems of vines. It is even more difficult to tell What these two subjects represent, than to date them. Generally, glass of this period depicts some Bib lical story. They must have been minor parts of a large window, full of medallions, and these tell only part of a story. These knights may represent Christian champions combatting the forces of heathendom, symbolized _as a wilderness of trees; they may themselves be returned Crusaders, the Teutonic Knights, who drove back the un-christian hordes of Northeastern Germany in the thirteenth century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Museum Bulletin, Vol. 22: September, 1926 Among all the old houses now standing in the Middle Colonies none is more worthy of a glorious renaissance than Mount Pleasant, the mansion built by John Macpherson on the banks of the Schuylkill in 17 61. Beauty and historical interest are united here to a degree very rare in America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
