Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ethnographic study involves the exploration of Ghanaian concepts and the cultural significance of scarification through the individual, the lineage, the clan, the ethnic group, and the community as a whole. It poses the question whether the breakdown of scarification traditions has affected the moral obligations of members of society and assesses its impact on development processes. The book thus examines the relationship between scarification perceived as mutilation of the body or as a means of communication. The book also serves as a general guide to ethnic scarification in Ghana.

Book The Book of Skin

Download or read book The Book of Skin written by Steven Connor and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the largest and perhaps the most important organ of our body—it covers our fragile inner parts, defines our social identities, and channels our sensory experiences. And yet we rarely give a thought. With The Book of Skin, Steven Connor aims to change all that, offering an intriguing cultural history of skin. Connor first examines physical issues such as leprosy, skin pigmentation, cancer, blushing, and attenuations of erotic touch. He also explains why specific colors symbolize certain emotions, such as green for envy or yellow for cowardice, as well as why skin is the focus of destructive rage in many people’s violent fantasies. The Book of Skin then probes into how skin has been such a powerfully symbolic terrain in photography, religious iconography, cinema, and literature. From the Turin shroud to Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man to plastic surgery, The Book of Skin expertly examines the role of skin in Western culture. A compelling read that penetrates well beyond skin-deep, The Book of Skin validates James Joyce’s declaration that “modern man has an epidermis rather than a soul.” “Richly conceived and elaborately thought out. No flicker of meaning has escaped Connor’s ferocious, all-seeing eye.”—Guardian

Book Cooper the Colorful Chameleon

Download or read book Cooper the Colorful Chameleon written by Denise Combellick and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2022-10-30 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chameleon’s skin has two layers. The top layer contains pigments (pink, blue, red, orange, green, black, brown, light blue, yellow, turquoise, purple), and the bottom layer contains guanine crystals. They are able to change colors by changing the space between these layers, which changes the wavelength of light reflected off the crystals and the color of the skin (kind of like a rainbow). Color change functions as camouflage to protect chameleons from predators such as birds or snakes. They change their color to blend in to avoid observation. They can change both their color and their patterns to resemble their surroundings or disrupt the outline of their bodies and remain hidden from sight. If detected, chameleons actively defend themselves. They adopt defensive body posture, try to appear larger, and warn with an open mouth. They will kick and bite and sometimes vocalize during their threat displays. Their color changes are also used in social signaling. These color changes signal their intentions to other chameleons. They show brighter colors when displaying aggression and darker colors when they give up. It is how they communicate.
