Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Navy, Past and Present: With Lists Showing Strength of H. M. Fleet in All Classes of Ships; Revised and Enlarged This war was the connecting link between the past and the present Navy. It was the death-blow to our wooden walls and gave birth to the ironclad. The terrible effect of shell against wooden structures was realised in one quarter at least, and from that time it was evident that eets in future would have an entirely different character. There was no gradual evolution, but a leap from the 120-gun wooden line-of - battle ship to the iron frigate carrying one quarter the number of guns but burdened with over a thousand tons of armour four inches thick. Such was now to represent the power of nations at sea, and which, with the same advance in dimensions as characterised the wooden ships from one century to another, has continued to do so up to the present time. Though I do not intend to dwell otherwise than brie y upon our early ironclad eet, it is useful to recall one or two of the characteristics of the first representative. When completed for sea in 1861 the Warrior had a displace ment of tons, of which tons were devoted to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Admirals of the British Navy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Admirals of the British Navy Classic Reprint written by Francis Dodd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Admirals of the British Navy If the Army, on the contrary, is so much under the microscope, it is largely because it has few or no mysteries. We know the rules. Armies are made up of men like ourselves (only better). They advance as we do, by putting one foot before another, on the solid earth. Their movements are followable, even if we cannot always understand them daily bulletins are printed in the public Press. But the Navy keeps its secrets. Not only have we no notion where it is, but we should be little the Wiser as to its inner purposes if, scanning the illimitable and capricious waves, it should be our fortune to descry here and there a flotilla of its dark grey hulls. Even in harbour most men pointing out a cruiser to their children say That's a dreadnought -a state of confusion bred and fostered by the strange, dark, dangerous element in which the Navy has its being. So much for the causes of our odd willingness to forego one of the chief privileges of British birthright, which is to criticise, even to belittling, all that is ours. But there is justification, too, as the state of the sea to-day testifies. Thanks to the Navy there is at this moment hardly an enemy ship at large on the surface of the waters. The Kaiser's darling ironclads are idle as painted ships upon a painted ocean: not even an ocean, a canal. Our troops in millions have crossed to the Continent. We have enough to eat. Download or read book The History of the British Navy Vol 3 of 3 written by Charles Duke Yonge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-12 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the British Navy, Vol. 3 of 3: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time Terror did not, in deed face danger or woo renown at the cannon's month; they did not risk their lives in the brief peril and rapturous excitement of battle and victory; but with deliberate courage they confronted for months and years the certain, daily, hourly peril of a navigation among unknown seas, of which all the knowledge that could be acquired only augmented the horror. They went forth voluntarily to endure cold, and darkness, and hunger; cold, of which no language can give an idea to those who have not felt it; darkness, faintly described by the state ment that for three months together they never beheld the sun hunger, which even when appeased, was often relieved only by food that at home the meanest among them would have accounted loathsome and disgusting. Their dangels again were not limited to the ordinary risks of wind and wave. Besides these, there was the fearful ice: sometimes threatening to crush Ships and crew in its irresistible em brace; sometimes hurrying them along they knew not whither; their nautical skill useless; their trusted guide, the compass, no longer to be confided in. Death staring them in the face on every side; and life, while it was spared to them, bereft of all pleasure, ease, or comfort; of all, in Short, that can make life desirable, save the one proud consciousness that they were doing their duty to their country in the way in which she had chosen that it should be done. Book The Rise And Fall of British Naval Mastery

Download or read book The Rise And Fall of British Naval Mastery written by Paul Kennedy and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Kennedy's classic naval history, now updated with a new introduction by the author This acclaimed book traces Britain's rise and fall as a sea power from the Tudors to the present day. Challenging the traditional view that the British are natural 'sons of the waves', he suggests instead that the country's fortunes as a significant maritime force have always been bound up with its economic growth. In doing so, he contributes significantly to the centuries-long debate between 'continental' and 'maritime' schools of strategy over Britain's policy in times of war. Setting British naval history within a framework of national, international, economic, political and strategic considerations, he offers a fresh approach to one of the central questions in British history. A new introduction extends his analysis into the twenty-first century and reflects on current American and Chinese ambitions for naval mastery. 'Excellent and stimulating' Correlli Barnett 'The first scholar to have set the sweep of British Naval history against the background of economic history' Michael Howard, Sunday Times 'By far the best study that has ever been done on the subject ... a sparkling and apt quotation on practically every page' Daniel A. Baugh, International History Review 'The best single-volume study of Britain and her naval past now available to us' Jon Sumida, Journal of Modern History
