Book The Passing of the Indian and Buffalo Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Passing of the Indian and Buffalo Classic Reprint written by J. L. Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Passing of the Indian and Buffalo Indian history begins with the advent of the white people upon this continent. Much of what has been written about the pre-columbian period is but a repetition of old fancies, legends and traditions. There are a few mounds or graves with their contents some inscriptions and some pottery resembling pres ent tools and implements common to the world. Excepting these and his descendants and their legends the pre-columbian Aboriginal stands a mythe. The mounds or earth works found in New York, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and elsewhere were for defence, residence or burial places. Built along streams they were frequently in the vicinity of rich alluvial soil where corn or other crops were easily raised. The cave and cliff dwellings of the rivers and canyons of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona and the ruined towns or pueblos on the plains in the same regions, were also for defence and residence. Some of the ancient ruins which have been restored on paper from the foundation lines are deemed to have been communal houses. These three grades or kinds of structures each conforming to the demand of climate were found by the Europeans on their first settlement in what were the Colonies of England, France and Spain. The antiquity of these structures was not determined by them. The ruined cave towns and cliff dwellings on the plains or along streams in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona and in some cases adjacent to the present Pueblos have long been peopled by romance with legends of a race anterior to the ancestors of the present Indians. They have been maped, plated, described, painted and photographed until nothing new can be said about them. Investigation shows tha tthe Pueblos were built of adobe or sundried bricks or stone blocks broken from the sandstone, adjacent or bowlders taken from the rivers or streams and never of dressed stone as known to the whites, that they were the homes of the ancestry of the present Indians of the towns of the vicinity and a part of the American race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Authentic and Comprehensive History of Buffalo, Vol. 1 Their social habits and moral character have been equally misrepresent ed, and misunderstood. Before they had became contaminated by their intercourse with Europeans, they might in many respects have served as patterns for our imitation. The hospitality of these Indians, (says Golden) is no less remarkable, than their virtue; as soon as any stran ger comes, they are sure to offer him victuals. If there be several in com pany, and come from afar, one of their best houses is cleaned, and given up for their entertainment. Their complaisance on these occasions, goes even farther than christian civility allows of, as they have no other rule for it, than the furnishing their guest with everything they think will be agreeable to him. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Buffalo Historical Socity, Vol. 7 In sending the treaty to the Senate, Jan. 14, 1840, Presi dent Van Buren declared that in his opinion the signatures had been obtained by fraud, and that the treaty ought not to be ratified. After being debated, through a period of eleven days, the vote stood nineteen to nineteen, and the treaty was ratified by the casting vote of R. M. Johnson, the Vice President, in the affirmative. A memorial, signed by sixty seven Seneca chiefs, begged that no appropriation be made to carry out the treaty, as they did not wish to leave their homes in New York. In the next year - 1841 - several peti tions were sent to Congress, asking that the Indians be for Cibly removed; but before action was taken, the committee was discharged from further consideration of the petitions. Governor Everett of Massachusetts, in his message of 1839, expressed the view that if the State had known all that it had since learned, it would not have consented to the request of the Ogden Company. Governor William H. Seward of New York wrote: I am fully satisfied that the consent of the Senecas was obtained by fraud, corruption and violence, and it is therefore false, and ought to be held void A Further Illustration of the Case of the Seneca Indians, p. Book The Poets and Poetry of Buffalo Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Poets and Poetry of Buffalo Classic Reprint written by James Nichol Johnston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poets and Poetry of Buffalo An anthology of Buffalo verse has long been talked of and much of the plentiful material for such a collection has been hitherto pointed out. The late David Gray, in articles written for his journal, The Buffalo Courier, referred to some of the poets of his time. Mr. Frank H. Severance, while editor of The Buffalo Sunday Express, gave considerable attention to our local poets, and in a paper on "The Authors of Buffalo," contributed by him to the publications of The Buffalo Historical Society, named a number of our writers of verse. Papers at different times have been read before our local literary societies on the poets of Buffalo. Mr. Charles Wells Moulton, in his Magazine of Poetry, especially in what he named The Buffalo Number, gave a selection of poems from Buffalo authors. All these helped to stimulate in many minds a desire to see more from the writings of our local poets brought together in one representative book. It has not been difficult for my friends to persuade me to undertake the gratifying of that desire; for I have watched the flowering of this native verse with a very warm interest from the early years of my life in Buffalo, when I began acquaintance with men and women in the older circles of those to whom poetry is a delight. There are three great travelers whom the Editor of this Magazine knows well, and whom at various times he has specially introduced to its read ers. The scenes of their explorations lie far apart, all of them being in regions heretofore almost unknown. No three men can be found differing more widely in personal appearance. Mr. Charles F.
