Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the work that miracles do in American Charismatic Evangelicalism? How can miracles be unanticipated and yet worked for? And finally, what do miracles tell us about other kinds of Christianity and even the category of religion? A Diagram for Fire engages with these questions in a detailed sociocultural ethnographic study of the Vineyard, an American Evangelical movement that originated in Southern California. The Vineyard is known worldwide for its intense musical forms of worship and for advocating the belief that all Christians can perform biblical-style miracles. Examining the miracle as both a strength and a challenge to institutional cohesion and human planning, this book situates the miracle as a fundamentally social means of producing change—surprise and the unexpected used to reimagine and reconfigure the will. Jon Bialecki shows how this configuration of the miraculous shapes typical Pentecostal and Charismatic religious practices as well as music, reading, economic choices, and conservative and progressive political imaginaries.

Book A Christmas Spider s Miracle

Download or read book A Christmas Spider s Miracle written by Trinka Hakes Noble and published by Sleeping Bear Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long ago in a faraway place there lived two mothers. One, a humble peasant woman who struggled daily to provide for her children. And the other, a mother spider who also worked hard to care for her family. And although it would appear they were as different as night and day, these two mothers had more in common than would first seem. As the only holiday gift she can give her children, one cold Christmas Eve the peasant woman goes to the forest to get a tree, never noticing that someone has made a home among its branches. During the night, the mother spider spins webs decorating the tree, resulting in a Christmas that neither mother will ever forget. Based on an old Ukrainian story, Trinka Hakes Noble (The Orange Shoes) crafts an original heartwarming tale of the grace that can be found in the true spirit of Christmas. Trinka Hakes Noble's numerous picture books include The Scarlet Stockings Spy (IRA Teachers' Choice 2005), The Last Brother, The Orange Shoes (IRA Teachers' Choice 2008), and Apple Tree Christmas. Ms. Noble lives in northern New Jersey. Stephen Costanza attended the Philadelphia College of Art. His picture books are Mozart Finds a Melody, Noodle Man: The Pasta Superhero, and Ten Big Toes and a Prince's Nose. He lives in Belfast, Maine.

Book excerpt: Christianity Today 2013 Book Award Winner Winner of The Foundation for Pentecostal Scholarship's 2012 Award of Excellence 2011 Book of the Year, Christianbook.com's Academic Blog Most modern prejudice against biblical miracle reports depends on David Hume's argument that uniform human experience precluded miracles. Yet current research shows that human experience is far from uniform. In fact, hundreds of millions of people today claim to have experienced miracles. New Testament scholar Craig Keener argues that it is time to rethink Hume's argument in light of the contemporary evidence available to us. This wide-ranging and meticulously researched two-volume study presents the most thorough current defense of the credibility of the miracle reports in the Gospels and Acts. Drawing on claims from a range of global cultures and taking a multidisciplinary approach to the topic, Keener suggests that many miracle accounts throughout history and from contemporary times are best explained as genuine divine acts, lending credence to the biblical miracle reports.

The stories in this collection are rather evenly divided between down-and-dirty realism and wild, not to say far-fetched, fantasy. The narrator of Menu is a man you might already know, while the lovely Lady Chastain, pianist for the Queen, us probably not at the center of your circle of friends. The longest story here, The End of Humphrey Kohn, despite its violence and unkindness, could well be read as a morality play. But who needs labels? Enjoy!

Download or read book Miracles for Breakfast written by Danny Brooks and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-08-25 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was lost—in more ways than I can count. I'd lost my way, lost my family, lost my friends. I was totally screwed up from all the acid trips, and the speed and the MDA binges, with strange-coloured animals flitting by me, seeing and hearing things that weren't there. I knew I had done something to myself, that I had crossed a line. I knew I was messed up in a bad way. I'd seen the end of Danny Brooks: in an alleyway with a needle sticking out of my arm. But God had another idea. He wouldn't let me forsake the life He'd given me. My spirit cried out for help from a place of black despair. I believe this book is one of the reasons He kept me alive. He wanted me to share my story of loss and redemption. No matter how badly strung out you are, there is always hope. There is always Him to call on. Faith can make you clean. Faith can keep you sober. Faith can give you your life back, and your dignity, family and friends. My story isn't pretty, but my hope is that it will be a light at the end of the tunnel for you or a loved one who has lost his way. May the way be found. Sincerely, Danny.
