Book excerpt: Hopeful Bill Dale he was called in the mining camps, where he made calls for supplies, and they jibed at his unquenchable optimism. Bill loved the desert; he delighted to pry and pick into some mineral outcropping in a far canyon where no prospector had been before and he was perfectly sure in his own mind that some day he would strike it lucky. And he did; he uncovered a gold vein that undoubtedly meant millions, which so elated him that he crowed over his good fortune to Luella, his parrot pet, who had an uncanny way of repeating any phrase that appealed to her fancy. So it happened that when Bill left her outside the recorder's office while he went in to file his claims, Luella chattered to the bystanders and "tipped Bill's hand." Unscrupulous ones heard, were quick to see the significance of Luella's remarks, and quicker still to start their own schemes to benefit by Bill's discovery. Thus started the boom on the Parowan Bonanza and thus started Bill Dale's troubles--for it was the gold that won him Doris Hunter. How Bill tackled his problems, how the Parowan boom worked out, how Doris developed, are all related in typical B.M. Bower style, with dramatic vividness, with accurate knowledge of types and their settings, and with refreshing, wholesome humor.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parowan Bonanza To those who do not know the desert, the word usually conjures a picture of hot, waterless wastes of sand made desolate by sparse, withered gray sage more depressing than no growth at all; blighted by rattlesnakes and scorpions and the bleached bones of men from which lean coyotes go skulking away in the brazen heat that comes with the dawn; a place where men go mad with thirst and die horribly, babbling the while of mountain brooks and the cool blur Of lakes shin ing blue in the distance, painted treacherously there by the desert mirage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B. M. (Bertha Muzzy) Bower was the first author to make a living writing popular westerns, creating more than sixty novels and hundreds of short stories that were read by millions of Americans. Bower’s were among the first westerns adapted to film, and the exploits of her cowboys at the fictional Flying U ranch established a tradition that flourishes to this day. A Montana mother of three, she began writing short stories in 1900, desperate for money that would allow her to leave her unhappy marriage to a cowboy employed by the McNamara ranch. Discouraged by her editors from publicizing her identity as a woman, Bower’s important contribution to American mass culture faded from cultural memory after her death in 1940. Based on extensive research in Bower’s personal archives and publishers’ records, as well as interviews with some of her descendants, The Bower Atmosphere recounts the remarkable twists and turns of Bower’s life, from her beginnings on a Montana cattle ranch to her success as a writer of serial westerns, all the while contending with the conflicting pressures of editors, husbands, children, and her own creative aspirations.

Book excerpt: Bertha Muzzy Sinclair or Sinclair-Cowan, née Muzzy (November 15, 1871 - July 23, 1940), best known by her pseudonym B. M. Bower, was an American author who wrote novels, fictional short stories, and screenplays about the American Old West. Her works, featuring cowboys and cows of the Flying U Ranch in Montana, reflected "an interest in ranch life, the use of working cowboys as main characters (even in romantic plots), the occasional appearance of eastern types for the sake of contrast, a sense of western geography as simultaneously harsh and grand, and a good deal of factual attention to such matters as cattle branding and bronc busting." She was married three times: to Clayton Bower in 1890, to Bertrand William Sinclair (also a Western author) in 1905, and to Robert Elsworth Cowan in 1921. However, she chose to publish under the name BowerBower's novels have been praised for their accurate portrayal of cowboy life. She wrote factually about such things as cattle branding and bronc busting, having witnessed these events firsthand. Bower's West is a place of change in which characters embrace new technologies from barbed wire to Kodak cameras. She infused her novels with humor. Her cowboys lightheartedly josh each other, and readers are invited to laugh at the ironic situations in which her characters are entangled. There is little violence in Bower's writing. In Chip of the Flying U, the eponymous character does not even carry a six-shooter. Instead, Bower's writing is characterized by a lighthearted, pleasant mood. For example, in describing a ranch kitchen, she imagines a tea kettle "singing placidly to itself and puffing steam with an air of lazy comfort, as if it were smoking a cigarette."
