Book excerpt: This book presents the recent work of Indian and US Scientists who are specialists in the area of parameterization of physical processes in atmospheric models. Examples of the physical processes that are taking place in the atmosphere are the cumulus convection, boundary layer processes, mountain drag, radiation, air-sea interaction and land surface processes. Each physical processes have distinct horizontal and vertical scales. The horizontal scales of physical processes are in the range of 1 km and less while weather producing systems have at the lower end horizontal scale of a few hundred kilometres. It is therefore not possible to monitor observationally physical processes on operational basis. The objective of parameterization of physical processes is to express their effects on weather producing synoptic systems in terms of large scale parameters. The improved schemes of physical processes have contributed significantly to extend the range of prediction in mid-latitude say up to 6-7 days. However, our ability to predict monsoon beyond 2-3 days is less. This is partly due to deficiency in existing parameterization schemes of physical processes in addition to data gap. The papers presented in this volume though applicable to the atmospheric models in general, they become more relevant to monsoon forecasting in view of the considerable efforts now being made on dynamical prediction of monsoon.

Book excerpt: The procedures and results of a study undertaken to evaluate and assess the impacts of three new parameterization schemes for the GL global spectral model as a 3-4 day range forecast model are described. The tree parameterization schemes are one each for the boundary-layer physics, moist convection and heating due to solar and terrestrial radiations. These schemes are incorporated either singly or jointly into a rhomboidal-30, 12-layer global spectral model for four-day simulations using FGGE III- a data as input. Evaluation and assessment are made on the basis of two kinds of global statistics: mean and root-mean-square errors, and on their magnitudes and distributions. The statistics are generated for both the primary, that is, prognostic, variables, and supplementary variables such as zonal-mean and zonal-eddies energy densities. The new moist convection scheme has been found to increase convective activity significantly and maintain it throughout the four-day period. It also warms and dries the middle troposphere, but produces rainfall far in excess of the climatology. The radiation parameterization has been found to cool the atmosphere and reduce its specific humidity. It counterbalances enhanced heating and moistening brought about by the new boundary-layer and moist convection schemes and eliminates the systematic warming of the old model.

Book excerpt: The National Academies' Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (BASC) held a workshop to explore and evaluate current efforts to model physical processes of coupled atmosphere-land-ocean (A-L-O) models. Numerical models of the atmosphere and ocean are central to weather prediction, research, and education. Although great strides have been made over the past few decades in understanding the atmosphere and ocean, modeling capabilities, and numerical A-L-O simulations, some unresolved processes in the models do not adequately represent knowledge of the underlying physics. Moreover, there is evidence that further progress in numerical simulations is being impeded by the slow pace of improvement in the representation of key physical processes in the models and the fact that geophysical flow models are not receiving the attention needed to make these tools more useful and accurate. These models often are used to predict future events, so it is imperative that their underlying physical processes be represented as robustly as possible. During the workshop, the parameterization of physical processes in A-L-O models was addressed, including associated errors, testing, and efforts to improve the use of parameterizations. Participants also examined intellectual and scientific challenges in modeling and highlighted the idea that some of the key impediments to progress in representing physical processes are primarily cultural in nature.
