For men and women in the workplace, this was just what they needed: practical help in applying their faith to their work life; encouragement to live out their faith; empowerment to be more effective in their jobs; support to become powerful witnesses at work; and examples of others who experienced the presence of God at work. Book Houses and Society in Norwich 1350 1660

Download or read book Houses and Society in Norwich 1350 1660 written by Chris King and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2020 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First full archaeological study of the urban environment of Norwich when its power was at its height. Norwich was second only to London in size and economic significance from the late Middle Ages through to the mid-seventeenth century. This book brings together, for the first time, the rich archaeological evidence for urban households and domestic life in Norwich, using surviving buildings, excavated sites, and material culture. It offers a broad overview of the changing forms, construction and spatial organisation of urban houses during the period, ranging across the social spectrum from the large courtyard mansions occupied by members of the mercantile and civic elite, to the homes of the urban "middling sort" and the small two- and three-roomed cottages of the city's weavers andartisans. The so-called "age of transition" witnessed profound social and economic changes and religious and political upheavals, which Norwich, as a major provincial capital, experienced with particular force and intensity; domestic life was also transformed. The author examines the twin themes of continuity and change in the material world and the role of the domestic sphere in the expression and negotiation of shifting power relationships, economic structures and social identities in the medieval and early modern city.

Book Quakers and their Meeting Houses

Download or read book Quakers and their Meeting Houses written by Chris Skidmore and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fascinating account of the architecture and historical development of the Quaker meeting house from the foundation of the movement to the twenty-first century. The Quaker meeting house is a distinctive building type used as a place of worship by members of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Starting with buildings of the late-seventeenth century, the book maps how the changing beliefs and practices of Quakers over the last 350 years have affected the architecture of the meeting house. The buildings considered are illustrated, predominantly in colour, and are from England, Scotland and Wales, with some consideration of colonial American examples. The book commences with an introduction which provides an accessible account of the early history of Quakerism and it concludes with a consideration of whether there is a Quaker architectural style and of what it might consist.

Book Georgian Houses for All

Download or read book Georgian Houses for All written by John Woodforde and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, Georgian Houses for All describes how little Gregorian houses came into being and how the original inhabitants used them. Gregorian houses at their smallest and simplest can be seen everywhere in the British Isles – detached, semi-detached and joined together in terraces. There are probably still over a million of them, built during a period of 130 years without the direct aid of architects. John Woodforde points out that an instinctive wish for a symmetrical front seems to be shown by young children’s drawings of houses, these being generally balanced and orderly. The Georgians’ love of symmetry, marked in their way of hanging pictures, was part of a desire for private order amongst public disorder, a desire to have one small sphere in which nature was fully controlled. John Woodforde reminds us that, in the present-day return to terrace-house building, the Georgian version remains a valuable guide. The book will be of interest to students of architecture, urban planning, and history.
