Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outlook to Nature If a person has given any serious thought to public questions, he has his own contribution to make as to the causes of present conditions and the means of bettering them; so I make mine what is now much needed in the public temper is such a change of attitude as will make us to see and appreciate the commonplace and the spontaneous, and to have the desire to maintain and ex press our youthful and native enthu siasms. And it is my special part to try, so far as possible, to open the eyes and the heart to nature and the common-day environment. My point of View is, of course, that of the countryman, and no doubt it has the countryman's bias. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What rational justification is there for conceiving of all living things as possessing inherent worth? In Respect for Nature, Paul Taylor draws on biology, moral philosophy, and environmental science to defend a biocentric environmental ethic in which all life has value. Without making claims for the moral rights of plants and animals, he offers a reasoned alternative to the prevailing anthropocentric view--that the natural environment and its wildlife are valued only as objects for human use or enjoyment. Respect for Nature provides both a full account of the biological conditions for life--human or otherwise--and a comprehensive view of the complex relationship between human beings and the whole of nature. This classic book remains a valuable resource for philosophers, biologists, and environmentalists alike--along with all those who care about the future of life on Earth. A new foreword by Dale Jamieson looks at how the original 1986 edition of Respect for Nature has shaped the study of environmental ethics, and shows why the work remains relevant to debates today.

Book Life in Nature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life in Nature Classic Reprint written by James Hinton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Nature It is just in this way we feel when we are relue tant to admit evidence which tends to demonstrate an identity between the organic world (that is, of plants and animals) and the rest of nature. When argu ments of this kind are suspected of a tendency to banish life from the world and interfere with the Creator's prerogative, it is surely forgotten that those forces and laws to which the phenomena of Vitality are thus referred, are to be judged of by their fruits, and not to be pronounced beforehand incapable of bearing them. To assume that we know what those laws and forces are, and are capable of doing, is arbitrarily to limit our own capacities. If the organic and the inorganic worlds in nature are two presenta tions to us of one thing, how much more penetrating and worthy may our knowledge become of both, each being interpreted to us by the other! Book The Spiritual Interpretation of Nature Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spiritual Interpretation of Nature Classic Reprint written by James Young Simpson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Interpretation of Nature These chapters, which have grown out of courses of lectures delivered both in this country and in America, are addressed to those who in their earlier outlook upon Nature felt sure of her inherent spirituality, but latterly have found difficulty in bringing this conception into line with some of the results of modern scientific thought. They contain, therefore, little for the special ist in science and philosophy, except perhaps in Chapters III. And IV., whose conclusions may suffice for the general reader. For some schools of theology, they possibly contain nothing at all. Where a writer's range of indebtedness is great, it is hardly possible to indicate it even by continuous foot notes, although that has been attempted here in some degree. In addition to the stimuli of many writings in particular the volume of Papers read before the Synthetic Society, kindly given to me by Mr. Wilfrid Ward - I would acknowledge my gratitude to him from whose New Testament I have taken his reading of a familiar verse, while to Dr. Sutherland Black I have owed much through many years. Nor can I refrain from stating what I have learned in conversation from my friend Professor John Clark of Boston University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unity of Nature As explained in the Preface to the first Edition of the "Reign of Law," published in 1866, I had intended to follow the chapter on Law in Politics with a concluding chapter on Law in Christian Theology. It was natural to reserve for that chapter all direct reference to some of the most fundamental facts of Human Nature. Yet, without such reference, the Reign of Law, especially in the Realm of Mind, could not even be approached in some of its very highest and most important aspects. At that time, however, I shrank from entering upon questions so profound, of such critical import, and so inseparably connected with religious controversy. Book The Scientific Outlook

Download or read book The Scientific Outlook written by Bertrand Russell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A scientific opinion is one which there is some reason to believe is true; an unscientific opinion is one which is held for some reason other than its probable truth.' - Bertrand Russell One of Russell's most important books, this early classic on science illuminates his thinking on the promise and threat of scientific progress. Russell considers three questions fundamental to an understanding of science: the nature and scope of scientific knowledge, the increased power over nature that science affords, and the changes in the lives of human beings that result from new forms of science. With customary wit and clarity, Russell offers brilliant discussions of many major scientific figures, including Aristotle, Galileo, Newton and Darwin. With a new introduciton by David Papineau, King's College, London.

Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
